I wanted to try something different for the Holidays, so I bought a bottle of small batch mezcal / mescal. I think I paid $40 for it.
But I just couldn't get my taste buds to embrace the flavor of the mescal. Straight. Or over ice. Though I do enjoy a good sipping tequila or dark rum (and I used to drink bourbon).
I read that there are over 40 different agaves (supposedly with different flavors) that can be used make a mezcal and sometimes one or more are mixed in the production process.
Does anyone have a recommendation of a brand to try or a best way to drink this stuff?
Does it pair with any food or snacks?

My mezcal experiences have
My mezcal experiences have mostly been in the state of Oaxaca. I spent a few winters there years ago. I'm not the biggest fan of mezcal but I was convinced to try various versions to prove they are all not alike. This is the case with everything on this planet. Mezcal is essentially tequila that has been produced outside of the state of Jalisco AND the "piña" has been roasted/smoked. So if you're not into the smoked flavor, you're out of luck.
Oaxaca has roadside (sounds safe?) mezcal stops much like a farm stand. Free samples. It turned out I liked the cheaper one more than the expensive. So cost shouldn't matter. In truth my favorite was called "Petchuga" which means breast. The mezcal is actually created with a turkey breast in the finishing process.
Anyway, I don't have any specific brands to steer you towards. I advise against anything with a worm. That's a gimmick. Bottom line is if you can't sip it straight, it probably isn't worth drinking.

Had a bottle of mezcal last year. I can't remember the brand - plain white label, Blanco. Shit tasted like burnt rubber. Back to tequila.

Try putting your tequila and your mescal in the freezer. Just like putting your vodka in the freezer, you can drink straight up with far less pain

On a side note, I thought I would try costco's brand of Anejo tequila. Pretty smooth. Has a cream soda overtone. Anybody ever tasted cream soda in tequila?
Yeah, I keep my vodka and tequila in the freezer.

I worked at a bar years ago
I worked at a bar years ago and they served airplane sized bottles of Dos Gusanos mezcal (two worms) and a scoreboard for most worms eaten. It was bad. Really, really bad. I have no idea what good Mezcal tastes like, but i do know what bad mezcal tastes like, and in two different directions :-(

Drank it in Oaxaca like Trailhead but am no expert on it. And don't really remember what it was like. It was more than 26 years ago. Do remember the chapulines (fried grasshoppers) which weren't bad but not great either.
