Saw "Vice" last night. Dark and humorous film about the rise of Dick Cheney from a drunken Wyoming yahoo to the most powerful man in the world. Not quite as good as the "Big Short" but has a similar flow and storytelling style and worth a couple hours of your time for sure. The Donald Rumsfeld character alone is worth the price of admission.
Caught another dark-comedy palace intrigue flick a couple weeks ago - "the Favourite" - which is set in the court of Queen Anne in the early 1700s. Visually stunning with solid performances. I am sure it is going to get plenty of Oscar nods.
Seen anything good at the movies this holiday season?

Blackkklansman
Blackkklansman is a strong return to form for director Spike Lee. It is based on a true story from th 70s (with some artistic license), and is very relevant to current times in this country.

Didn't quite have the edge I would expect from him. Almost felt like he sold out a bit and changed the story just to sell movies (go figure). That seems antithetical to who he's been in the past. But it was very entertaining.
We did see Mary Poppins last night. About as strong as you could expect from a follow up. Still doesn't come close to the original but not to shabby.

He definitely changed plot
He definitely changed plot elements Zang, like the year it is set in (I think he wanted to tie in the early 70's Black Power movement and it's culture and music by setting it in 1972 instead of when it actually occurred in 1979 when the Black Power movement was waning and Disco was peaking). The fictitious addition of the bomb narrative was definitely a plot device. However, he exposes racism and racists in a relevant manner. The Charlottesville footage at the end was pretty gripping for me. It drove home the point that we are still far from a tolerant society.

I saw At Eternity's Gate. It was good but maybe not everyone’s cup of tea. The filming style tried to show the mental anguish that Van Gogh experienced in his last years, a lot of close up and shaky first person shots. It worked but I can also see it giving headaches to people.

Good point. I forgot that he wove in current events. Those elements were well played.
