Photos - Jazz is Dead XXV at Tarrytown 1/26/23

Forums:

Interesting show. Very very different sound since the last time I saw this band with TC and Pevar.

The first time I saw Jazz is Dead was in 1999 with Jimmy Herring. Alphonso Johnson has been the only constant in all three versions 1999, 2015 and 2023.

Caught them in Boston the other night.

Sounded great.

I hadn't seen JID since 99 either.

There were 2 line ups without Alphonso.

2001 – 2002

T Lavitz – keyboards

Rod Morgenstein – drums

Jeff Sipe – drums

Jeff Pevar – lead guitar

Kenny Gradney – bass

2002 – 2006

Jeff Sipe – drums

Jeff Pevar – lead guitar

Dave Livolsi – bass

Whether it is Bobby and the Midnites or Jazz is Dead, Alphonso seems to always be followed by Kenny Gradney.

I haven't seen Alphonso play since his Bonny & Midnites years. He looks older but has held up better than most.

The band really liked their performances at the two NY shows, especially Tarrytown.

I went up to Jim Thorpe last night to see the final show of tour. They have a scattering of additional dates planned throughout the year. Alphonso teaches and they have to work around his schedule and other bandmembers' commitments. And they don't want to it to become a shtick.

The town was surprisingly quaint but the venue (Penn's Peak) sorta sucked. It was a ski lodge barn kinda place with real high ceilings (good for covid avoidance) that sounded so crappy that the band had trouble hearing themselves. It was much more rewarding hearing this ensemble in a theater. Someone told me the place was designed for acoustic music; well it sure wasn't impressive. It had a sports bar vibe and wouldn't serve booze without a mandatory mixer, so the drinks were all watered down (too many drunks vomiting after doing shots according to the bartender). Jorma and Jack are playing there soon, but I'm not inclined to see them there.

And the crowd (a lot of crunchy methy hippies, most of whom seemed to smoke cigarettes during break -- people still do that?) was so loud and talkative during the quiet portions of the first set (Stella Blue was ruined), the band canned a tour ending spacey Dark Star to do some more upbeat / louder numbers: so the second set St Stephen > Eleven > Terrapin was blistering. Kimock raged. It was definitely worth the drive for that last hour of music.

All in all I'm glad I made the effort to see two shows and look forward to checking out the recordings. (Available for free on the band's public FaceBook page).

^ don't waste your time listening to the FaceBook stream -- I just checked it out.... there are so many talkers and the sound is so lousy, the video stream is not impressive at all.  It sounded much louder and cleaner up front in person.

I was there last night too.  I got in early and got a seat in the front row.  Not many talkers up there or in the pit.  Most were just enjoying the groove of the music.  However when I ventured back to the bar to get a refill and see take in the view from there I could barely hear the music over the talkers so I went back to my seat quick.   I was honestly surprised they drew that big of a crowd.

I thought it was a pretty cool venue but the acoustics weren't great, it almost reminded me of seeing the Dead at the Tacoma Dome with the wood roof.

>Not many talkers up there or in the pit.<

Joe -- Agreed. I started out in seats in front of the soundboard and went up to the rail, which is rare for me, but I was solo and there was plenty of space up there.

Did you perchance see the zombie guy in the middle of the road halfway up the mountain when you were driving up? Whoooa. It was very dark and out of nowhere this guy? waving something blue stumbled into the intersection sorta like he was in distress and was trying to flag us down. But he was spooky looking, we were startled, and we kept going. Was thinking of turning around but realized a police car was driving in front of us and he didn't pull over, so we didn't either. Very weird.

Haha no.   I didn't see that.

I'm adding a few of the published photos that are also available to see via the link at the top of this thread. Several shots are from the new Nikon and they are first time the camera was used out in the field.

How much do they have to pay the GD for playing their music!?

Typically great shots Howard!
