10 Albums That Changed My Life: Jack Casady

Might not be the albums you might think of......

This is great thanks for posting. Found this interesting:

“At a certain point, my listening period was done,” he insists. “Because now I was going to be on my own. I had cut the cord. Somewhere along the line, you have to stop copying everybody else.

My wife's nephew is an international touring classical violinist and he doesn't listen to music which I found so interesting. Then again he may just say that since he probably doesn't want to talk about music with people on what is the equivalent of a 5 year old level for him.

Thanks for sharing this.  I have read other interviews with Jack over the years where he lists Eric Dolphy's Outward Bound, Oliver Nelson's The Blues and the Abstract Truth and Rev. Gary Davis's Harlem Street Singer as his favorite albums.  So like all of us, I guess it depends on the day you ask!

When Jack came down to check out my store when Hit Tuna was playing the Neptune Theatre, he was in search of a rare 7" by the R&B artist O.V. Wright.  From the looks of this list, it is clear R&B has had a big effect on him.

I meant Eric Dolpy's "Out to Lunch" album as a favorite of Jack's

Casady grew up in DC in the late 1940s and 50s, and I'm guessing there were many R&B stations on AM radio in that area at that time. Also, Wikipedia tells me that "First playing as a lead guitarist with the Washington, D.C.-area rhythm and blues band The Triumphs, he switched to bass during his high school years, and while still underage (and with a forged I.D.) played the Washington D.C. club scene, backing artists such as Little Anthony and the Imperials."

So much great and influential music! Yes, I love Jack and his music.

Thanks, Slick. heart

I don't think I've ever even heard of mickey and sylvia

or rakmininov sviatoslav either

i'll be checking those out

I remember the Mickey and Sylvia song "Love is Strange" from back then. It was dance music. The sound lives on.
