steely dead is a huge tease. they are dangling in front of me something ive always wanted to see - fully jammed out dan tunes played by competent improvisors.
but they dont jam on the dan tunes! only the dead songs. i get it, but fuck. where is my 20min glamour profession?
This was a great weekend of music. I had my 17 year old son with and it was a great farther and son weekend. He started getting into the Dead last summer and now his completely immersed in it. Remember when we first discovered The Dead.
The event was really well run. Beautiful setting, great food options, plenty of space and facilities. I lived in Manchester for about 15 years and its a great community and I hope this festival comes back.
Day 1
Steely Dead were very fun, the opened things up a bit on the the Steely Dan tunes. There was a brief interruption for weather but they came back and finished strong.
Pink Talking Fish were great. My first time seeing them. A great blend of the 3 bands having Talking Heads in the mix worked really well and they had great execution.
Day 2 - Bigger crowd, more energy, better weather.
Dead Man's Waltz - Also fun, pretty standard "bar room" band but they turned up the heat
Melvin Seals and JGB - I had been looking forward to this now with JK in the mix. I know this site has a lot of JK detractors, but I have always been a fan and he takes the band to a whole new level. His playing is so strong and his interplay with Melvin is fantastic. They open up the music a lot more then before JK and he adds freshness to both to both the JGB repertoire and Dead tunes. If you haven't seen this version of the band, check them out.
We went as well and enjoyed! Though it was hot and humid as fuck!
Very well run little fest. They were on top of keeping things clean, lots of receptacles, portolets, etc.
Every band started exactly on time. Friend's band said they were treated very well, and would jump on any event put on by these folks.
I'd say most typical festival complaints, were non-existent. Would def go again.
Steely Dead was the only group affected by weather, as a storm blew through. They were given a lil extra time by PTF though, and finished their set, very good stuff.
We stayed camping in VT, in spite of the floods, to catch Steely Dead at Nectars and Zenbarn. Unfortunately, the band opted to cancel both, citing flood travel difficulty.
Fortunately, Vermont is simply fucking awesome, and we had a great time just doing our thing and basking in the chill vibes of the State.
Good shows. Agree with everything NYC (VtHead) said, two really excellent days of music in Manchester. Haley Jane was excellent. Loved seeing Clare Maloney on the big stage and Deadgrass as always plays a wonderful set.
Anyone want to see photos from the Dead of Summer shows, my shots are posted at the following GratefulWeb links:
Then on Sunday, the rains came. The mountains got hit with a deluge, 8-10"+. Ludlow, Londonderry, Jamaica, Barre, Montpelier, all are major disaster areas from the flooding. Any town that runs along the spine of VT on Rte 100 is at the bottom of a giant funnel, a V for all the rain to run through, stress out the roadways, undermine the bridges and the infrastructure. This is probably worse than Hurricane Irene in 2011. That was 8 hours and done. It's going to take a while to rebuild again. And this is still going on with major T-storms coming through again today.
Nice pics, Howard!
Some friends of ours in that Arukah band, and guesting with the Dead Man's Waltz band.
We continued camping in VT through Wed, definitely crazy rains, on the heels of an already well saturated start of Summer.

Would you have room in your European auto for 3 dogs and 9 nitrous tanks? If so, we're in business.
