Sam Ash Music Stores to close all 42 stores

Forums:

Haven't seen a thread on this, sorry if it's a repeat.

Classic American success story:

Sam Ash settled in New York City in 1907 after immigrating from Austria, aged ten.

He first worked in the garment industry and played violin at weddings but soon became determined to open up a music store.

His wife, Rose, pawned her engagement ring to come up with the $400 down payment needed to open the first Sam Ash store.

100 years is a long run, but they couldn't compete with online sales (I'm guilty!) and folks coming in and testing an instrument but then buying it elsewhere ("showrooming", a term I had never heard before).  Apparently Guitar Center isn't doing to well either, every time I'm in my local one it's empty.  It's sad that kids will no longer be able to just go and hang out at the local guitar store anymore, a tradition for any musician growing up.

Retail is not for the faint hearted since the pandemic...
