If we didn't have corporate weed this wouldn't be happening...
many independent, smaller growers are also using illegal immigrant labor for lots of work these days due to drastically decreased bulk prices. there is actually a job that i could potentially have up north right now, which i wont get because rather than pay experienced regular employees that can handle the amount of work on said farm, they've downsized to one employee who oversees teams of illegal immigrants. this farm and many others would prefer to hire people like me but cant afford to anymore.
the people who say that americans wont do the difficult agricultural jobs taken by illegal immigrants can eat my entire asshole. im not talking about min wage strawberry picking here, im talking about full time jobs with middle class salaries replaced by teams of temp labor.
I had a nearly a ten year period of my life where farm labor was a main part of my income. The farmers or food companies often pay piece rate. The price per bushel can be so low that if you can't make enough money equal to minimum wage they are supposed to fire you. I had to winter in Mexico to sustain my lifestyle because it was never enough money to live off of the grand old USA.
I loved the work, but piece rate makes you work like a slave. Believe it or not , some Americans no longer believe slavery should exist. We're not getting away from slavery inspired agriculture anytime soon. But AI is coming for everyone's job. So there is hope!
absolutely not. i could see myself being supportive of some level of deportations going down if it was handled as an administrative issue. dont like biden's asylum policy? great, fine, when the people who came here under that policy come up for their court date, deny those claims of asylum and send them back to their country of origin in a speedy and humane way, not as prisoners or criminals. at some point if someone skips some court dates and isnt showing up, issue a warrant and arrest them like youd arrest a HUMAN, without teams of military thugs. if someone here illegally or on a temp basis commits a serious crime, send them back to their country of origin as part of the sentence given for that crime, stuff like that.
