RIP Zodiacs Petaluma's Former Music Venue

Forums:

Turtle asked about the status of Zodiacs in another thread, a couple of weeks ago. I had been unable to log on then to answer.

Zodiacs was a short lived, fun, cool hippy music venue in a fairly large space that hosted several excellent David Nelson Band shows and one with Billy K and friends. For many years, the space used to house Kodiak Jacks, a bar known for redneck clientele and drunken brawls. Zodiacs was such a good idea at the time, indeed, but the friendly, well intentioned yet inexperienced and underfinanced owners had little chance at success operating a bar/restaurant/nightclub in this market. Out of their league. Zodiacs is gone forever.

After long and expensive renovation, the building now houses 256 North, an upscale restaurant. I ate there recently, as a guest of a friend who knows the owner. The food was good, but pricey, and the atmosphere isn't my style. I enjoyed my meal, but there are many better places to eat in Petaluma, at same price range or cheaper. I don't plan to go back to 256 North any time soon on my own dime.

I loved Zodiacs! Jonesie & his wife the owners were very nice people. They always made you feel comfortable when
you were at their club. It was sad day that heard the club was closing. DNB had some great shows in that room.

No shit

Very sad

nice people nice spot great music

even Lakers apologists and dreamers think so

Gotta add my 2 cents.  Loved Zodiacs. Loud, friendly, cool.  Jonesie was a fine owner and is a good guy, I am sad that they could not make it work. Not enough great venues of that size.

So lets everyone grab a hat from the box and have a party! Celebrate what we had for that short time.

>an upscale restaurant<

gak.

horizontal fences for everyone...

that was a fun few times.

loudest, cleanest nelson i've heard.

if you stood next to the speakers you could see them physically moving air...gnarly.

I only got to make it out to zodiacs once.

I saw Leo's meters experience featuring Bernie worrell.

He stole the show right out from under Leo.

such an honor to see him in a room that size, totally undersold.

i can still see that dance floor of people just absolutely raging for the 'red hot mama' finale.

shook his hand after the show and thanked him.

he passed away less than a year later.

i loved the venue, the trippy paintings on the walls, the acoustics and I probably spent more on food and drinks than I ever do at shows, not because it was overpriced, but because it was affordable, solid quality and decent service.

i imagine it was ideal for dnb.

shame there aren't more venues like it.

Rest In Peace,

Zodiacs.

Glad that I've got a few Awesome recordings for listening.

Thanks for Everything wink
