Wow, great eagle! Happy New Year, Doc!

Maybe there are Sasquatch spawning behind that large tree.  The eagle knows.

Doc, I second that emotion! The Mattole River did indeed have an incredible run of Chinook salmon this season. The run peaked in about mid-December, and now most of the Chinook being seen are spawned-out (or nearly so), or have already died (as all salmon do after spawning). For the rest of the winter, pretty much all the fresh-looking adult salmonids you'll see on the Mattole will be steelhead or perhaps the occasional coho salmon.

I used to be in charge of the Mattole Salmon Group's annual Spawning Ground Surveys, from 1980 through 2004. Now, my field-work days are pretty much over and a new crop of young, dedicated and energetic fish-heads are continuing this all-important work.

Doc -- was your first photo taken from the bridge crossing the Mattole near Whitethorn Construction?

Hey Gary Hows it ?I wanted to go down 3 weeks ago and take pics .Late to the pics .We did have  a few active last week huge all black .The bridge is the corner of my land. The pic was about 200 hundred yards down river of the bridge around the bend  past what we call the river house on the Huckleberry lane side . We also have a huge blue heron hanging behind the house .Steel head will need some rain I hear to get up here .Hopefully this week .   Hi Judit !
