2021 Summer Olympics-The Tokyo Games

Forums:

Kind of a head-scratcher why the International Olympic Committee is going forward with this.

The majority of the Japanese population is in favor of canceling the games altogether, with fears of it turning into a COVID superspreader event the leading reason.  There will be no fans in attendance, which will deprive the Japanese of revenue to offset hosting costs, as well as the energy and international esprit de corps that the fans bring to the Olympic experience.   Even the medal ceremonies will be affected, as the winners will have to put on their own medals.

Many star athletes won't be present.  The U.S. Men's Basketball team has a few stars and a bunch of no-names and will be lucky to medal.  Star U.S. sprinter Sha'carri Richardson has been left off the team because of outdated cannabis policies.

Seems like a boondoggle at best, and a potential black eye for the IOC.

do they have homeless in japan to sweep away?

What could possibly be influencing the IOC's thinking?$?$?$?$$$$$$

Bad judgement indeed.

and a potential black eye for the IOC.<<

Some MFers can't be shamed. The IOC are some of those MFers.

I can't wait for the homeless sweep in LA for the 28 games.  Hopefully they'll start tomorrow.

I can't imagine anyone is really watching this anyway.....

racket pre-booking his spot in the bootlicking line, seven years in advance.

Fuckin cuckiest shit I've read all weak

Im here to entertain, boomer.

The money is in the broadcast rights, not the live ticket sales. They'll still bring in tens of billions in global broadcasting.

These athletes are the best in the world, and they eat, sleep and breathe the Olympics. From what I've read, the vast majority want to compete in Japan. If they want to compete, I say to go for it.

Interesting that you brought up the US Men's hoops team, Dave. Personally, I couldn't are less about the NBA All Stars winning a medal or not. Personally, I dig it when the unknowns make it to the podium.

I don't care what anyone says. All these athletes are walking into an empty stadium, masks on their faces, and you can see the joy in their eyes. It's not about politics or Covid, it's about sport and performing at the highest level. These young athletes have spent their lives training for the Olympic stage, and they've made it. For me, it's pretty profound.

I love the Olympics, and really look forward to it, but this shit's gonna be strange, mixed with a background of danger. These days strange seems to be the norm.

Racket,  the Big Sweep in San Francisco  before the Superbowl really cleaned up that part of town.

I hear LA area is a mess, ready for a deep clean.

They also spray the shit and piss off of teh streets, that's nice too.

COVID XIX Olympics...

why doesn't  japan have homeless?

Wow MikeyV appearance.  Blast from the past.  What up man.  You still talk to Poncho?  Wonder what happened to him.  Hope all is well.

Not about sports and athletes anymore. Not that it really ever was. You might have an occasional athletic record/moment but not many.

I'll watch certain events where it's not about judging but athletic performance. I will watch Biles, not because I'm a gymnastics fan, because her athletic ability is insane. Watch the slow motion video of her vaults. Absolutely insane.

>>Not about sports and athletes anymore.

Earlier today I watched a few minutes of the pairs archery. The looks on the faces of the South Korean gold medal winners would say that it's all about the sport and athletes. When the Ecuadorian dude won the 250km bike ride, and earned his nation's second gold in history, it was only about the sport.

If you don't want the commercial bullshit, don't watch the lame prime time NBC coverage. All those other stations are showing wall to wall sports, from table tennis to judo to 3 on 3 basketball. The best in the world, mostly unknown, are competing. It's all pretty fun to watch.

Nearly 100 American athletes went to Tokyo UNVACCINATED! I didn't read "why" others did that, one said he'd had Covid and didn't want anything to interfere with his training schedule. Leaves me almost speechless. Almost. What about his fellow athletes, and all of the other people with whom he or people around him come into contact? Having the Olympics there is such a huge risk for the Japanese people. Arghhh.

Arrogant asshole. You don't hear me say something like that very often but in this case I do.

Who is giving the unvaccinated covid and why?

If you are vaccinated but spread it to somebody, how do you not bear responsibility?

>>> Who is giving the unvaccinated covid and why?  <<<

Why? What does that refer to?

Who's giving it to them? People with Covid.

Can a vaccinated person spread germs?

Can that person be an asshole?

I made the mistake of trying to watch the '92 Olympic gymnastics on 7g of boomers. Actually, I made the mistake of taking 7g of boomers and forgetting that the Olympics were going to be televised that night, and I badly wanted to watch it. The freakishly alien contortions of the gymnasts did not go over well at the peak, but swimming came on shortly after and the rippling water was very soothing..

Good times!!!  Go USA swimmers!!!!!!

Guess ML Retten still the real goat

Kind of glad that Biles pulled out. It took the coverage away from her, and allowed others to shine. The Russians rose to the occasion. Even better was the Brits, who barely made it into the team finals. They were happier for the bronze than the US was for the silver.

Could be as simple as Biles injuring herself on vault. The media could be creating some unnecessary drama..

I would be very disappointed if she withdrew because she would lose her winning streak

I bet she'll still compete in at least a few of the individual events.

She should use the Ramones "I've Gone Mental" for the music for her floor routine.

Of course there will be plenty of sympathy but as a long distance competitor, I think the mental side of competition is a big part of the game. So no goat

It's a triumphant morning in Jamaica;

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/olympics/jamaican-sprinter-elaine-thompson-...

A sweep of the medals in the Women's 100 Meters, and an Olympic Record and 2nd fastest time ever for Elaine Thompson-Herah.  Jamaica rules in the sprints, although it's questionable if they would have swept the medals if the U.S.'s Sha'Carri Richardson hadn't gotten the banhammer.  Megan Rapinoe openly uses CBD and profits from shilling her own brand while Richardson is disqualified.  Weed hipocracy at it's finest.

Still, a great day for Jamaica.  Cool runnings.

My lil sis called that performance ^ 'a thing of beauty.'
I asked if we were watching the same dive..err jump.

Yes, she said - it was so perfectly  Chaplin esque, just spectacular.

The Olympics  has it all : the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat and comedic bloopers

The BMX Freestyle finals finishing up now -  very cool

How much longer do we have to endure flat ass bikini vollyball- ?-- scheist !

You prefer Sumo wrestling ass?

I didn't see any flat ass.

As the medallists posed for photos, USA fencing silver medalist Raven Saunders raised her arms and crossed them into an X shape. She said it represented "the intersection of where all people who are oppressed meet."

The 25-year-old, who is black, gay, and has spoken frankly about her struggles with depression, said she wanted "to be me, to not apologize".

After competing, she said she aimed to give light to "people all around the world who are fighting and don't have the platform to speak up for themselves".

The spirit of Mexico City 68 lives.

I'm feeling pretty fucking oppressed by the excessive virtue signalling.

Fencing?

>>I'm feeling pretty fucking oppressed by the excessive virtue signalling.

I know how you feel. Some woman, 15,000 miles away, crossing her arms on a podium to show solidarity for intersectionalism is really keeping me down and making my life hell.

Shot-Putter, good catch.

Bob Moses warned that the nation “can lurch backward as quickly as it can lurch forward.”

Thanks for the Moses info aiq, really good stuff.

Tokyo is one big ass city

Tokyo is the most populated metropolitan area in the world, so it's appropriate that it's much larger than NYC in terms of land area. Still, it's noteworthy that Tokyo is SO large that its population density is 15,604 people per square mile, as compared to New York's 27,578 people per square mile.

NY one bad ass city

'The hotter they got the better they looked'

sportscaster referring to the Swiss volleyball duo

I'm missing them already, even with the terrible tv coverage - hardly saw any boxing, or track + field events, no decathlon at all,, and saw waay too much diving, and volly ball. Can't wait for the winter games and my favorite announcers Johnny Weir + Tara Lipinski.

Also heard these lines from the NBC sportscasters

'Pound it in the pink' during volleyball

'that's a big carrot dangling' during the men's relay

even had to replay a few times to make sure I wasn't hearing things.
