80's Grateful Dead

There's Dave's Picks Volume 20, and 8...but yeah, bring on more 80's.

Lots of cassette masters from the 80's, as well as lots of missing shows.  Add that together with the poor vocal quality of Jerry for some of those years and it makes sense that the 80's are the least represented.

But there are multi tracks of the Warfield and Radio City runs in 80, I'm surprised we haven't seen more of those.

Come on, guys. The 80s were great because the scene was great, not because the music was. How many people besides the collectors are gonna buy a sloppy show from a northeast hockey hole in the Spring of 84. The guys that were there, sure, but not that many others. Bring out a 3-pack of uncirculated October or November 72 shows, however, and now we're talking.

The Dicks Picks with the complete Richmond 11/1/85 with the post drums from Rochester 9/2/80(maybe the best Dew of the 80's) has some fine music...

Would love to see some July 1981 shows released.

July '81..thinking OKC & St Paul.....both monsters

When introduced to the Grateful Dead in early 70's, A family friend who had been to many shows was joining my family at a folk fest. The topic of the dead came up.I asked, whats the big deal?I had only heard records at this point and was nonplussed. He replied that deadheads go to as many shows as they cant to find "The one good one". That they are wiling to travel, go to many shows in a row until they find a great show that spoke to them. That sounds about right in my experience. It can be subjective.  I found that when Jerry blew a lyric, his voiced cracked or whatever, he would often make up for it with a smoking lead to make amends to the fans.  The scene WAS good and unlike anything else going on in the 80's. I wih I could go back just one more time. Lots of gems to be mined in that decade. Love to all- even touch heads. cheeky

I feel once "Touch of Grey" hit FM radio, "The Scene" rapidly  began swirling into the toilet.

Right, sure. I generally assume the "give us more 80s shows" movement is talking about 80-86, pre-coma.

dont underestimate 88-90. they did release the Warlocks shows though...

The graphs tell the story

If they have them....

both Roanoke shows from '87.  Great stuff.

Listening to 7/4/89 right now....Watchtower is smoking!

>> Listening to 7/4/89 right now....Watchtower is smoking!

That whole show is strikingly strong

I was giving out oranges at 7/4/89 :-)

I like 82'.

6-27-85 Saratoga would be a good one but the boards already sound so great not sure if it's needed for release.

Mississippi 1980 rain fest stompin in the mud  free papers for everyone /83 Merrier Weather post free papers for all law seats were a mud slide just 2 that come to mind many good shows as I sit in the rain

I think most tapes from the 80s have poorly balanced mixes, mostly the vocals too loud, sometimes Phil or Jerry's instrument too quiet, an insanely loud hi hat over in that speaker.... Take 7/13/84 for instance. Can't put that out, Jerry's guitar is too quiet. Can't fix 2 track mixes .I'd say also that the 80s shows prob don't sell as well either. There's more incredible audience recordings from the 80s than ever in the public domain, why so desperate to be a custie?

Fly, they released 89-90 shows mainly because they have multi track recordings which they did for Without A Net.

Did someone say 6/18/83?

One of my favorte 1980's shoes was Hershey Park Stadium 6/28/85.

Small outdoor venue, raining the whole time, 3 Jerry tunes at the end of the first set plus a killer second set.

Amen! My favorite GD show to listen to!

I like the Phish model.

Release older shoes and offer both hard copy and mp3 download. Keep the overhead low in order to release more quantity.

Lake Placid '83 would be a nice release.

All of the 89 fall tour was recorded on multi track (and spring 90).

Without  A Net and the Warlocks releases were the result, and Truckin Up To Buffalo (7-4-89)

Healy recorded much of 1985 on Beta PCM and the sound on those recordings is also superb--some of my favorite shows. I do wish they would dig a few more out from that year and release them.

11-1-85 is the  only one I've seen.

Also released 7/7/89, Red White & Blue, the final event at legendary JFK Stadium.

Set list is standard late 80's GD, but the performance is an "A", the video shows JG in grate form, smiling, communicating with the rest of the group, very fine show....

I'm not sure that a Dave's Picks release can improve much on what guys like Charlie Miller have already done to a lot of 80s cassette soundboards... pre 89... these aren't betty boards on 1/4" tape

Hershey, Merriweather 85, Warlocks, The albany without a net shoes(90), the alpine downhill from here, closing of JFK, even a little "electric on the Eel" all bring back fond memories.  The whole era really. I have soundboards of all on cassette naturally .  Even if sound was not to somes liking, they remind me of what I heard then. I think auditory memory is strong that way.   I inevitably find myself walking the lot, listening to the music spill from peoples cars, smelling the mix of patchouli and grill smoke , admiring the patchwork mamas cheeky, and whipping up the "spare change" for the burrito bus and a big sammy smith. Oh and fatties in the Philzone at break.   For that, Id pay for a nice packaged and mixed shoe with some art and inserts. I cant say I buy many, but when I do I usually smile for a few days. If I was there in 72, Id imagine I feel the same way.

  ((time machine))

DEAD FREAKS UNITE!!!

I love how we all see things differently. I started seeing the dead in 86 (thru 93) but I have listened to all those summer 85 shows, an awesome awesome tour, and I always thought that Hershey show was one of the weaker ones of the tour and that Riverbend, Blossom and Saratoga are all cookin hot!  and they all have CRUSHING sounding recordings both audience and soundboard, and many summer 85 shows have matrixes too. What you want is already there, people, dudes have already transferred the master soundboard cassettes to digital.

nycdave you shoulda posted this one, CM's more recent transfer of Hershey:

9/6/80 is long overdue. A complete 9/2/80 would be nice too. And while we’re at it, how about the entire 5/8/80 show!

Let's not forget Red Rocks and the Greek Theater.

Texas 81?

All 4 of the Glens Falls Civic Center shows 1979 - 1982 along with all 4 of the SPAC shows, 1983 - 1985, 1988. Those would make two nice 1980s box sets even though the first Capitol District show was 8/31/79.

There's more 80's dead out there than i had thought...

Good thread and timely since I just recently switched back to listening to audience or matrix 80's shows when I listen to the dead. Mostly from those east coast hockey rinks. Just love to hear the energy crackling off those tapes.

Dylan & the Dead sucked

frown

Dylan and Dead were great!

I thought Dylan and the Dead were lacking in Eugene, much better in Oakland just following Eugene. Those were the only 2 I hit.

**^Check out the club front rehearsals in 1987 in sf

Which year of Manor Downs are you looking for?  I think 82 was released on the Circles around the sun box set.
