83 was a great year!

Forums:

Probably my most active year seeing many a show. Made it to the west coast New Years run 3rd year straight . .  Spring tour saw Hampton Virginia  open the tour, followed by Morgantown West Virgina, , Binhampton New York ,Rochester New York, ,Brenden Byrne New Jersey more excellence with special guest Stephen Stills, ( Black Queen and Love the one your with)  and New Haven Ct.. I think I saw  5 Help>slip >Franklins this run.  Next tour, summer  83,  saw the legendary opening show of Saratoga (SPAC) 6/18/83 and the next 2 night in Rain soaked Merriweather Post Pavillion. (Night 2 was the night bob fell ove the drums and invented rock rap on sunshine daydream he went about Aboriginees  and how dreams were reality and vs a vica    ....skip to Fall east coast tour ....was  exceptional... starting my run in in MSG (St. Stephen) in to  Hartfordand then  in to Worcester Mass  and then a single  show in Lake placid New York.  Wow...I am getting excited seeing this in black and white. Tour closed in Syracuse carrier dome, the largest venue I had ever seen the dead play.  I remember these shows so well. The Band warmed up for the Dead, without Robbie Robertson, and completely smoked.  i mean they blew the doors of the joint and were a very tough act to follow. I sat on the floor like row double Z....maybe 55 row. ( LMFAO)  behind the tapers.  The dead were good. My  good friend David L taped the gig on his Sen Hiezer boom mikes. The "band" stole the show .... the audience tapes were special.

I ended 83 with the last of my 4 shows on thw west coast,  , the  New Years runs. Very good shows.  Yeah. 83 was a great year.

You do any shows in 83?  What you think?

I caught seven shows in 1983--4/22 New Haven, 4/26 Philly, 6/22 Harrisburg, 9/2 Boise, 9/4 Park West, and 10/14 and 10/15 in Hartford--and I thought they were all pretty solid. One Dick's Pick (first night Hartford), one Dave's Pick (Boise), the Hartford St. Stephen, and my first shows out west are just a few of the highlights I caught in 83.

Just Lake Acid, my first show.

Found out last year I was conceived in Lake Placid several years before the Dead's show there.

Broome County 4/12/83

Spectrum 4/28/83

SPAC 6/18/83

MSG 10/11-12/83

Centrum 10/20-21/83

Carrier Dome 10/22/83

Warfield was the first mail order shows, good score on Halloween in Marin, capacity is just a little over 1900.

Solid 4 pack at the end of the Spring, 2 great venues no longer around.  2 months later, the first shed tour in the East.

10/21, released on the 30 trips package, Brent's birthday, is an underrated smoker, as was the 10/12 MSG.

NYE run was a let down,  3rd show had some spark, hoping for a Help/Slip, Stephen, Dew, Uncle John.  Hell of a good venue.

I was at the Aladdin and Irvine. Had a blast.

Only saw the 4 NJ/NY shows, and some JGB (Jerry shows are much harder to keep straight as to year/venue/runnin'pardners, etc., for some reason).  '83 was a very "electric" year. The guy at my college with the Jews for Jerry button always had doses, and the kick-ass drummer from the Music Dept. had a great 'shroom connect.

Irvine, last Warfield show, both Ventura's. That's all folks!

Jerry at Ventura. His birthday shows. He was fucked up. Musically I think were the weakest of all the Ventura shows. 84 being the best

jerry mwss.jpg

jerryventuraand band83.jpg

Caught 7 shows that year, including being a 1st-timer at  MSG for both night's. Jerry owned the building that October... and we recently discussed that killer '83 SPAC show.

Love me some '83. Band on the run.

I saw 20 shows in 83 newly high school graduate ,rochestah, two nights at new haven, slept out for tix at the box office got 3rd row,two nights w stephen stills exit 16 w,oreno 10 dollar student tix providence Saratoga shroom pizza, muddy weather, shitty island, redrocks took me down to Santa Fe rainbows n somberows,Manor downs with cases of canned buds sold for a buck inside,so far all great music and times New years 4 shows to boot vollyball at the civic... no complaints here

Saw 4 shows in 83, good times (have never been able to find a board tape from the Portland OR show)

just remembered I did Harrisburg City Island. We hit traffic arriving late. Walked in on Ramble on Rose.. It was a good show.

I've always found '83 to be a big transitional year for the band, and IMO a transition for the worse.

'83 was when at least to me Jerry's addiction was becoming obvious, both physically and in his playing.

While Phil had switched to the 6-string bass sometime in '82 I really began noticing the difference at '83 shows, and as much as I have always loved Phil, I have always preferred Phil's sound & approach on the 4-string more than the 6.

'83 was also when Weir stopping playing the Ibanez and started with all the variations of the clangy, whiny guitars he has played most of his career since then, something I've always personally never liked nearly as much.

I saw some good shows in '83, but I also saw changes happening that I didn't like so much, changes away from the very articulate, floating, soaring sound to a heavier, less lyrical, more predictable sound, changes that never really got better.

Almost all of that is personal preference based on what I saw & listened to, but especially coming right off of 1982, which I thought was a great year for the band, '83 always lagged for me, both at the time and in later years when listening to recordings.

But that's just me.

As the great JWood would have said...

YMMV.

Probably 50% of my first 200 hours of tapes were from 83. Even though I wasn't there, I have a special affinity for the year. In a way, it was the soundtrack for my misspent (or perfectly spent?) youth.

@Lance

Probably 1984 was my favorite year of shows I saw from 80-90. Jerry was junked up but produced tons of epic playing and some of my favorite shows I saw. And some favorite versions of songs of mine.

What Lance said.

Park West

dead park west 1983.jpg

That was a fun day in Utah. I'm thinking I was right behind the dude in the yellow hat.

My first show was 6-20-83 at Merriweather.  It was also my first acid trip.  It was very wet and muddy out on the lawn, and I was drawn in by the music and the communal crowd vibe.  Had to wade through waist deep water to get back to the parking lot after the foot bridges were washed out.  I always thought of it as a baptism.

My second show was the 10-8-83 Fall Tour kickoff at the Richmond Coliseum.

A couple of hot shows to start with.  I wasn't fully on the bus yet, but I was getting there.

What up KK!! I don't think the drive from Hampton to WVU was long enough. I went to most of my 83 shows w you and H2 and our dearly departed friend. 83 was a GRATE year! I hit 38 of those shows.

1 show that stands out for me was UV Burlington. Toughest ticket I ever scored at face value and the smallest venue I ever saw the band in. Some knock the show but I loved it especially space-Morning Dew but 10/11/83 The Grateful Dead made MSG levitate . Many great shows throughout the year for sure!!

I went to these ones in 1983

Not as epic overall as 1982, but better than 84-86 when Jerry was not doing well.

Funny to read these POVz. I had just quit full time playing after ten years of chasing that elusive butterfly.

I went from the northeast playing music to coastal Gulf Coast and a TV job pushing buttons in the control room.

Only bluegrass and Miles Davis for the next ten years or so.

College in 92, teaching in 94, Derek Trucks Band in 98 and jam revival.

Life is funny.

I've always found '83 to be a big transitional year for the band, and IMO a transition for the worse.'83 was when at least to me Jerry's addiction was becoming obvious, both physically and in his playing. >>>>>>

Hi Lance. 82 was a firecracker of a year. I can not say I noticed a downward swing in the bands momentum in to 83 but when reflecting upon it by the end of 83, the New Years eve run, the band was not as hot. For me it was those New Years shows, my last New Years run, that the transition you mention really took hold.

Man, I was 14 years old with no older sibs.  Jealous.

I was a soaking wet Wharf Rat at that show. I finally got in to the pavilion and out of the rain during set break,  Post drums I made it to the orchestra.  I saw H1 in the 10th row but i continued my decent  I found myself in front of the rail during the Other One transitioning in to Wharf Rat. How appropriate.   I was now  standing in ankle deep water paranoid as hell as I was standing over the electric cables feeding the sound board and light show.  Wharf rat was excellent and I remember Jerry doing windmills to the cheers of the over crowded pavilion.  The sugar Mag> Sunshine day dream to follow is one for the ages. Great show. I remember being content and having my Phill of good times and did not mind missing  the next night.

Yo Johnny. Nice to see you.  It would be great iof you could catch some of these shows on video but I believe they are few and far between for 83 tour other then NYE run. If you have not done so yet check out the post drumz from this show.

Great show. I remember being content and having my Phill of good times and did not mind missing  the next night. >>>>>>>

Let me correct myself. I was not happy about having to miss the next night but I was pretty sure I had already caught the better of the 2 nights.

And he said even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I didn't have my drivers license yet so only saw 3 shows in '83. (It hurts just to write that).

4-15-83---Rochester War Memorial.

The only Lazy Lightning I saw, and the first of the three Bob Stars he did.

5-26-83---JGB......Auditorium Theater, Rochester. First of 100+ Garcia Band shows. I remember how strong Jerry was at this show.
(and the tape confirms).

10-22-83----Syracuse Carrier Dome. My second of 3 Dome shows. The Dead and The Band 10 years after Watkins Glen...The first of a few

Revolutions I was lucky to see.

Agree with others that at least by the the end of '83, this was the beginning of a new era.

I saw a bunch in 83. Dave .. your first two shows! Nice! Only Crazy Fingers of the year at Richmond on fall tour. Lance I'm with you on all of your points made. The party was really  turning on  hard within the inner sanctum. Plenty of strange people suddenly backstage.

indeed!

^ Miracle might be an understatement, Eggman. That's a ton of dough for a college kid, no matter how you slice it. You must've had one of those Dead Express cards?

Actually I sold buttons if you were at any of those shows and bought one it was from me or another Zoner who will go nameless for now. In Greensboro the cops were busting alot of vendors so it was inside the window stickers. I did not have a credit card other then Sears until 1986.

As I said earlier in the thread and being a working stiff at the time, I managed to make it to 7 shoes that year. Never was a "button" collector, so I probably did not kick down to your cause at the show's we intersected, Eggman.

Even FACE for all those shows you saw, that is one mofo of a lot of "button" profitability to have traveled coast to coast. Of course, we all gotta eat...

Timpane hadn't been born yet. LOL.

Drove to Red Rocks w my buddy from New Paltz in his Ford Pinto that was an adventure to say the least and BGP caught me selling buttons but only took them away as opposed to suing me for Copyright Infringement .

OK- starting to get good here, Eggy, if I may. What's BGP, and what were these buttons of that there was potential to get popped for them?

At least you got good gas mileage in the Pinto, but now yer' in CO.- with no buttons?

My mother had a Pinto when I was in HS- my brother and I both beat the shit out of that thing learning to drive. It took the beating, though.

At the 1982 NYE run Bill Graham Productions (BGP) put out a little catalog with all the Grateful Dead album covers on em and w the use of a color printer and the Badge A Minute button presser we made buttons of what was in the catalog . Back then I had to take the train to NYC to get access to a color printer. My button mentor is a fine Zoner and showed me how to get to a lot of shows by vending. I am Grateful for his mentorship. Prior to getting caught in Red Rocks I had sold several hundred buttons but $ was definitely tight and the ride back we had to pick up an additional passenger to help w gas $

Hampton 83 was my favorite show. It was roughly my tenth show hampton 1980 being my first show so i was starting to get the hang of the whole thing.. Most everyone in the crowd was incredibly right as was the band, obvious at certain times during that night. Not sure exactly what they were doing but it was something good, something real good. Bits and pieces of that night come back to me now and then, most notably Jerry during Satisfaction doing the Pete Townsend whirlwind at the end then trotting off stage. i also remember the ride back to where we were staying going through that long tunnel, not fun. At the afterparty thing there was this local guy that slinked in or we let him in, had this shirt on that said Pog Mo Hon. POG MO HON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    Saw a few more shows in 83 but hampton was my favorite. This is factoring in entire experience, good friends, great music and a great fkn time overall. Bertha opener, China Rider to end the first set. Jerry crushing Satisfaction !

Interesting stuff, Eggmeister.  I never vended or "toured"- just tried to snag the closest shows I could every Spring, Summer and Fall tour. They were like clockwork in the NE for a looong, strange time. Being from Buffalo, it was a good location to hit a lot of cities.

>>>Bill Graham Productions (BGP)<<<

For accuracy...

BGP stood/stands for Bill Graham Presents.

Hold everything! I do have a really small "American Beauty" button, or pin, you could call it. I bought it down here from a guy who had a bunch of rock pins, etc., but I wonder if it trickled down from you, Eggmaster? Small- not way bigger than a dime.

Good stuff Egg.

I was about that busy in '92; between the Dead and the Garcia Band, I went to 41 shows, every one of them at least 300 miles from where I lived.

Still not sure how I didn't fail out of college....

300 miles? The Eggman makes you look like a ham 'n egger, LCL.

I flunked out of college just going to shows on campus. You guys are guru's.

> $ was definitely tight and the ride back we had to pick up an additional passenger to help w gas $

That's usually where things get really interesting, or it always was in my experience at least.

Yes Earl, living in northern Humboldt County was a bitch that way.

I think I figured out that just that December I drove 3,200 miles.

Im glad I was young. I get tired just thinking of it all now...

For The NYE shows in 83 I had no $ and many buttons. Spanjam , who started this thread, carried me financially until I was able to sell buttons in SF. On Dec 30 I found a ticket on the ground and since I already had one I was able to hook up someone I knew from high school w the ticket . He was a year older then me and hooked me up w a ride to my first Hampton show in 81 and then to The Spectrum after those shows. My touring stopped in 87 and it was all about Tri State area shows and NYE shows. Saw NYE run from 81-91 .

Earl were you at Buffalo 81? I loved that show although the drive to Landover from Buffalo overnight was brutal.

Great year in my GD career, had a real job, some $ and paid vacation time. Hitching to Park West I got a ride to the ski resort the nite before the show and a place to crash in the condos. Sometime during the night I opened a bedroom door to find a group shooting smack. That freaked me out, so I took a walk up the hill where the show would be. I came across some freaks burying a keg in the ground. Found them later during the show and drank a ton. I remember the local popo were on horseback patrolling the fence-line. Hit Red Rocks > Santa Fe

Yes, Eggster- never missed a Buffalo or Rochester show between '73 and '88, when I moved to Florida.  Then they followed me here for their only St. Pete appearance in Fall '88.

Anybody remember a Bobby and The Midnites show in Rochester? It was outside somewhere, and they were under a tent? That must've been a one-time tour.

Earl, it was downtown in the Festival Tent. For some reason I didn't go but saw a killer BB King show there at that time.

I don't know why they always played well in Rochester, but they did.

There's no reason to it, but, yeah, rock solid in both of those town's consistently, with Rochester '77 standing out for me rather immensely.

Loved all those upstate 70-80s NY shows,  Binghamton, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo ...SUNY schools, always had a place to stay

Smuggling Brador beer across the US-Canada border...

You didn't really hafta' smuggle beer in to US Customs back then.  I always told the guy I had a case and got let go every time. If you told the Canuck you were coming to buy beer- same deal- go spend money American boy. The real Canadian spec's were so damn good for around 24./case, it was like stealing. Another time's almost forgotten space... I think you hafta' cough up your 1st-born male child to do that now.

> Smuggling Brador beer across the US-Canada border...

And O'Keefe's, and LaBatts, and others I've somehow forgotten.

Molson Golden.

Made those beer runs from Rochester a couple of times.

Almost got busted at the Detroit/Canada border after the '87 Alpine shows going

to the show at Canada's Wonderland.

Do they even brew Brador anymore? after the Coors merger?

Speaking of  Smugglin  & Coors, My brother in the 70's traveled back from Colorado with a few cases. At that time Coors wasn't produced east of the Mississippi due to no preservatives hence no pasteurization. Imagine being the life of the party when you showed up with Coors!

Gone are the Days...

haha

I made the Canadian beer & ale pilgrimage a few times, from CT, MA, and maybe PA too. The 80s are kind of foggy for me.

On one of those trips with a buddy of mine, we stopped in Bennington, VT for a quick visit with lady I had lived with a few years earlier. It was about midnight when we pulled in, and we smoked a bit of hash with her, which she always had. As we were getting ready to leave, my lady friend mentioned she had just gotten back from Jamaica, and had some shrooms she had gotten there to share. Being in our early 20s, my buddy and I ate a handful on the spot, and then got back on the road with me driving. About 30-40 minutes down the road, i thought I felt the shrooms coming on, and then made the mistake of looking in the rearview mirror, which had transformed into a dimensional portal that I felt myself getting sucked into. Everything was cool as long as I kept my eyes fixed straight ahead through the windshield, but that rearview mirror vista was just too much.

But that didn't happen in 1983. It was 1982, I think.

My favorite Rochester show I attended was Silver Stadium in 88 . They were selling cases of beer in the venue. The Green Onions show. Although if I had been at Rochester 1980 my opinion might differ.

I would like to submit a Rochester 85 IKO for the group as an an example of how the band played  different  upstate

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lrkl_2Ku5zU

^ Nice audio quality there, joy, and palapable crowd energy, as they say.

I still have a " Brewers Retail" bottle opener on the other side of my fridge from Mike's thread...

>>My favorite Rochester show I attended was Silver Stadium in 88 .

That was a good one! I liked 87, too. In the Dark came out the day before that show.

I still have the black shit from the Silver Stadium parking lot ground into my ankles.

> Rochester 85 IKO

The set list for that Rochester show is pretty crazy. Little Red Rooster early in the first set, Jack Straw late in it, and then a Revolution and She Belongs to Me in the second, and a Satisfaction encore? I saw the GD play Syracuse once and SPAC a couple of times, but now I'm wishing I had made it up that way more often for shows.

Alfond Arena at the university of Maine at Orono. 38 years ago. Have a look at the map. Far! Check out the Lazy Lightning!  Also a version of On the Riad Again. How many zoners made Orono?  Six nights earlier at the university of Vermont i was treated to my only GD backstage. Tough ticket. Backstage door opens and a roadie pops out and offers me $30 to head down into Burlington to get as much of the best maple syrup i can find and come back and you're in. True to his word, what a night it was!  Great tour!

A backstage pass for scoring maple syrup? I wonder if Jerry needed it as a topping for his Ben & Jerry's. Too funny.

I saw Bobby and the midnights with Joan jett opening at the auditorium theater in 82-83, don't remember fersure.

Helluva a show, they served beer, we were drinking, it got pretty hard to get up and down the stairs after a while.

I saw the dead in Binghamton, Rochester anD Syracuse in the fall. Fun times

Maple Syrup. Was it cooked down enough or diluted?

It was the best.

Doc, I was cooked down enough and the syrup was strong enough to gain me entry into what was the toughest ticket of the entire tour.  Patrick Gymnasium.  Those that were there know that nothing was diluted that night!

I've had that show on tape since 84 and love the Morning Dew and Estimated/Eyes from that show. Really good versions that I remember. Time to listen again I guess.

I must say I've been enjoying this "nostalgic" thread, but Gregg- the maple syrup part is really good- but what HAPPENED "backstage" that night? Get a high-five from Jerry? Shoot the shit a little with Brent? Get dirty looks from Parish? Grab some shrimp from the buffet? Did Billy sneeze on you and laugh in your face? Did you actually get an "all-access" lanyard? Give us somethin', bro-ham.

I've never even been warm to being backstage...

>>>>>The set list for that Rochester show is pretty crazy. Little Red Rooster early in the first set,

Lol.

Earl, I arrived back with the syrup at around 4:00p.m.  I was let in a backstage door and out came a toilet paper roll of passes.  One was ripped off for me (unfortunately one piece of nostalgia i didn't manage to keep) and I was ushered to the front row where i hung out for about 10 minutes puffing a fatty with the roadies.  They told me it was time to go but to come back to the same door at show time and I would be let back in.  Pretty exciting!  Showtime came around and back to the same stage door.  I was lead to the stage stairs and was able to greet the boys as they walked onto the stage.  I'm a big fan of Lazy Lightning and that's all I said to Bobby. "Lazy Lightning Bobby".  From there it was into the crowd for a fabulous night of music in one of the smallest venues that I got to experience the GD, Patrick Gymnasium.  There was no actual backstage hangout for me and no laminate, just a sticker pass that got me into what was a very tough show to get into.  Maybe we can get a thread going of our experiences running into band members over the years.

Yep, there was never a red rooster in the first set blues spot...not rooster, not walking blues, not.......

(((Pee break songs)))

>>>  Maybe we can get a thread going of our experiences running into band members over the years.

Good call- thanks, Gregg.

Easy, Jonas- sounding a pinch "Deader than thou"...

Only four Roosters on the spring '83 tour!  One song that always alluded me was Cumberland Blues.  Finally got it at the Maple Syrup show!  Only took 67 shows!  Got it a second time a week later in Providence 4/20/83!  Make good money $5.00 a day!

> there was never a red rooster in the first set blues spot

I don't know about never, jonas, but the Roosters I saw always seemed to fall in the middle of the first set, or later, when you actually needed a pee break. I was just surprised to it right after the Iko opener.

I had a friend who went to UVM at this time; his buddies' dad owned a limo company there. They took the band to and from the hotel to the show.

So this kid is driving Garcia and a few others to the show and puts on a tape. The divider is down so they can hear the music. After a few minutes Jerry says,

"This is ok, when was this?"

The guy goes "last night."

His friend had taped the Binghamton show the night before and gave it to him.

MTV was introduced in August 1981 but its first interview with Garcia was in June 1983 while on tour with JGB just a few weeks before SPAC.  I saw it today for the first time and it really cracked me up. Check it out.

Great find, KK. Thanks.

Very Cool!!

That was recorded 2 days before I got to see Jerry at The Chance in Poughkeepsie.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUZZTsvcrfw

Jerry at The Chance was AWESOME! That place was shaking for the early and late show. Or was it 2 sets I forget.

My favorite Chance story was when we went to see Robert Hunter there (I forget the year 82? 83? 84?) . We were smoking one outside before we went in and a beat up old car pulled up some bum got out and asked if he could join us. The bum was Robert Hunter.

KK, thanks for sharing that video.  Put a smile on my face.  "Certain people like licorice, certain people like buttermilk"

KK also never saw that!

I am listening to The Audio Book - Jerry on Jerry I recommend to those who like hearing Jerry interviewed . This is my second go round listening to it.

Po kipsee city of sin, caught the early shoe up on the balcony.. underage ..incroyable

Those were insane shows. No doubt the best JGB experience I ever had.   I traveled from New Paltz which is hop skip and a jump over the Poughkeepsie bridge .

At another Chance show. I was doing a doob i n the alley outside the chance with a Zoner buddy :)  leaning on a 65 Ford. Or was it a Chevy?  It was a classic car. The owner of the car comes over.  We apologize for leaning on the car. He is very cool and he tells us he drove far and wide to get to the show and is dying to smoke.   We smoke together and he thanks us and says he has to run and he will see us inside. We did see him inside. He was Robert Hunter.

Yeah.....it ws 2 shows.  I think.

I was concerned as I was on the balcony.  The balcony was not shaking..it was fucking swaying in beat to the jams.  Like standing in water ankle deep at Merriweather post pavilion I had to change my underwear after the show.  The Chance was condemned a short while after the shows. I laughingly blame the JGB performance for that.

2 shows, Early and Ye Olde Late...

Thanx for posting that.  I am reliving the moment.

Yo dude.....Yes the details are foggy to me as well. I remember Hunter wearing a hat with a feather in it and carrying a stick with a red hanker chief stuffed with bread and cheese. :)

Hunter had a very strong voice that night and did a great Promentory Rider.

I also had the good fortune to attend his Chance shows, and got to meet Robert Hunter after the 83 show, as he was walking out to his car.

He was very sweet, and signed my ticket stub.
