What's that owl throw, a knuckle curve ? Flew into your catchers mitt ? Snared in your blueberry bush netting ?

One quick jerk of the neck and that dove breast is right on the grill.

Jerry Staute 2022.jpg

Where is that?

Hi Mark, it's at Edgefield, a McMenamins property east of Portland. Concert venue, great art on the walls and doors of the hotel, distillery, winery, gardens, bars, restaurants, spa, it's got it all. We stayed there a couple of times long ago. Greg liked it because he could walk around the gardens smoking dope without concern. That was before it was legal, and he was happy to be able to relax.

I know what day it is, but ....

Nice monarch mike, never seen so few as this year. We normally have a dozen or so pairs in the summer.

This year we've seen just one, this guy here. Not even one pair. Fuck. I grow a patch of milkweed every year just for em.

20220817_124234_copy_1047x1068.jpg

Importance of Milkweed

Milkweed is the host plant for the monarch butterfly. Without milkweed, the larva would not be able to develop into a butterfly.

Monarchs use a variety of milkweeds. Monarch larvae ,or caterpillars, feed exclusively on milkweed leaves.

Thanks, Ras. What's amazing about monarchs is that many of them migrate 3,000 miles to Mexico for the winter. I wrote a book about them last year, and learned that they can fly 50-100 miles a day, and one was recorded flying 265 miles in a single day. And while the their trip south is quite a feat, what's really amazing is that it takes four or five generations of them to make the trip back north.

Been trying to grow milkweed for a couple yrs now with zero success.

I caught the dove in a building at work. Dropped him off in the shade and waited till the bird did the ,Start Me Up/Mick Jagger walk.

I caught the owl in another building.  He flew in through an open door. Three or four coworkers and I were looking trying to figure out what to do when he flew full speed from one corner(decent size building)to the catty corner where he hit a window at full speed.

Poor guy was knocked silly so I grabbed him.

20180607_080955_1528404398515_copy_756x1008.jpgHe's coming too a little.

IMG_0446_copy_487x649.jpg

Now we're in my lab. He's awake and snapping his beak. Cool as fuck sound.

We called the local Animal Control and they took the bird to a rehab. He healed up and was released on Caddo Lake not far from here.

After that day nobody fucks with me at work.

*snicker

Very cool, jaz!! Those eyes are mesmerizing.

The Owl Whisperer! Nice Work. Thanks for doing the right things for wildlife.

> Those eyes are mesmerizing.

And keep you from noticing the talons.

I'm in awe, Jazfish. Did you even get a scratch on you?

Thanks all.

Joe , if you look at the owl's eyes in the very first image his pupils are huge. Out coldish.

Just when I'd almost given up hope, this afternoon I notice three new monarch babies eating up a storm on the milkweed, half a leaf an hour, each. Can you tell which one I posted twice ?

Awesome Ras.  Been trying to grow milkweed to no avail as yet. Maybe next yr.

Those horses look almost real.

I had forgotten about Alice B Toklas.  Really enjoyed it when I was younger.  I wonder if it holds up over time?

Mark, it still has Peter Sellers in it, so I'm thinking it does.

Will wonders never cease? I sure hope not.

Saw that Hendrix pic on FB today, ya beat me to posting in Mike, lol...

Milkweed roots grow deep, 1 - 2 feet or more, near impossible to get rid of once established, so make sure you plant it in a spot that you don't mind it taking over.

This droplet stayed on just long enough for me to grab the cell to take this shot.

Northbound train in 1951 near Ophir, CO

A friend died in an avalanche almost 25 years ago in one of the paths seen in the distance above the caboose.

That's a cool shot of Fred and Archie, Noodler!

There's something about the authenticity of their expressions sharing a bit of harmony ... in light of the characters they've played on TV

Face> just found out that my friends grandma was the post master in Ophir in the 20's while her husband worked in the mine.

br:  that's interesting!

Not sure if I posted this shot of the Ophir PO before (1969)?  There's an old-time mailbox now (which looks like it might be near the base of the flag pole) where the gas pump appears.

^I don't think he's too far off in that assessment but I had to laugh because his (& Sharon's) previously stated reason for selling out of CA (LA) and moving back to UK was the high taxes. Granted high earners and 'the rich' do pay much higher rates under the progressive tax codes of CA but maybe that was a ruse because it ain't cheap to live in and around London either.
