Celebrate America's Public Lands Day Saturday!

Forums:

Those lands are your lands! Help protect them!

And here's another reason to celebrate! Fresh news Friday night. Hopefully his actions will be ruled invalid.

A federal judge on Friday blocked William Perry Pendley, the anti-public lands extremist who has overseen the federal Bureau of Land Management for more than a year, from continuing to lead the bureau.

U.S. District Judge Brian Morris in Montana ruled that Pendley has illegally served as acting director of BLM for more than 400 days.

The decision comes in response to a lawsuit filed in August by Montana Gov. Steve Bullock (D), which argued that Pendley’s ongoing tenure violates the Federal Vacancies Reform Act. The act limits the amount of time Cabinet officials may serve in an acting role to 210 days.

“Today’s ruling is a win for the Constitution, the rule of law, and our public lands,” Bullock wrote in a Twitter response. “Montanans can rest easy knowing that National Public Lands Day will begin with William Perry Pendley packing his desk and vacating the Director’s Office.”

National Public Lands Day is Saturday.

A former property rights attorney who spent his career arguing that public lands should not even exist, Pendley has led the bureau since July 2019 via a series of controversial temporary reappointments. He’s overseen 245 million acres of federal land without ever having to face the scrutiny of a Senate confirmation process.

I'm headed to Capitol Reef Nat'l Park area to do my celebrating.

Enjoy them now, because soon they'll all be sold off for mining or turned into private retreats for Herr Trump

and his lovely family.

And all the Democratic politicians will whine that "they were powerless to do anything to stop it, sorry about that."

What we are watching unfold in front of our eyes............

Thanks as usual for posting Slickrock. I'm thankful for these kinds of stories that you bring to my attention.

YES! Among the many se-backs and defeats handed to tRump this week, this one in particular brings me a warm fuzzy feeling.

U.S. District Judge Brian Morris is today's hero.

Have a blast in Capitol Reef, slick. I have barely scratched the surface in that area. Take diligent notes.

Yeah, you have a blast on the river, Ned.  Good luck with Trin Alcove and don't forget the hike to the Post Office.

I have a friend with a house in Teasdale, about 15 miles or so from the park. Lots of places out there to hike. Music party Sunday night. Just nice to relax in a small town.

Right on. Trin Alcove is marked on the map and our target for Night 1.

Hoping to get up into Three Canyon from there, which has always foiled me from the rim :)

I did some hiking in there from above and almost could not get out. Seriously. Was by myself too. Actually thought "Holy shit, I am fucked."

Might not count on TA on night one. Only seven miles away but depending what time you take out....popular spot. Might wanna sent the canoe down to grab it or find out.

With really slow current, the canoe could possibly row back a few hundred yards to that other spot and wait it out. Later.

We're having challenges with arranging a car shuttle, so might be doing Ruby Ranch > Mineral Bottom > Ruby Ranch drive Tuesday morning. So, will not be getting an early start. Might shoot for Plan B with Trin the following night.

So, who's gonna actually bounce this fool?

This seems like a dry run for what's to soon to come.

Pendley sounds like a real menace.

As a former industry attorney and longtime president of the Mountain States Legal Foundation (MSLF), a litigation organization funded by conservative and industry groups including the Charles Koch Foundation and Exxon Mobil, Pendley boasts a deep background of legal advocacy for extractive resource industries on public lands.

He has made light of killing endangered species. The Guardian obtained a 2017 recording in which he told a group of North Carolina rightwing activists, “This is why out west we say ‘shoot, shovel and shut up’ when it comes to the discovery of endangered species on your property.”

Congressional Democrats also expressed concern with his views on social justice and racial inequality. Pendley has mocked Native American land management practices and dismissed the Black Lives Matter movement as based on a “lie”.

I'm headed up towards Bakersfield today for a drive up the Kern River into the southern part of Sierra National Forest.

I'd never heard of Public Lands Day.

I'm celebrating a little late this year with a 2-night, 3-day backpacking trip in Shawnee.

got some on mez_0.jpg

Nice to hear, hammer.

Great shot, Joy. Bristlecone Pine, isn't it?  Ever hear the song "Bristlecone Pine" by the great Michael Johnson? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEalVBUaquw

Since this thread got revived, I'll share some videos of my trip to Capitol Reef. They're all kinda similar shots of rock walls.

This one is where I just pulled off the road for a lunch spot heading into the park. Unfortunately, there's a guy there who's on his phone and you can hear him.

This one is in the park where I pulled over on the scenic drive. You can hear the Native American flute music I like to play on trips like this (on a cassette!).

It's R. Carlos Nakai and William Eaton from a great album "Carry The Gift" on Canyon Records. Very high recommend.

This last one is where I went hiking. I decided since I didn't get on the river, sitting down and taking in this rock wall for a while will suffice. Then I noticed - absolute silence. There wasn't a sound.

Here's a pic from my hike.
