LIAR

I don't lie, plf.

I like white wine with crab cakes.

arf arf arf....

I make crab cakes a few different way but my favorite is with an Asia twist.

Lump crab meat,  Pablo, egg,  mayo, lemon juice, lemon zest,  sesame oil, sriracha, green onion,  and salt and black pepper.  Mix everything together gently.  Coat again in Pablo and shallow fry.  Delicious!

Good time of year to get crabs as they fatten up.

I get mine from a crabber in Crisfield, MD

Bushel of #2 is $60

Number 1 is $100

Love crabs cakes; missed a seafood festival here this weekend, sadly.

Still going to here tonight any ways ~

Around here, we have the Dungeness crab and red rock crabs.    The Dungeness crab is the most prized because of their size and meatiness.  However, there are strict size and sex limits, so its sometimes hard to find a lot of "keepers" when you are crabbing off a pier:

If you go crabbing in Yaquina Bay, you can almost always come back with a cooler full of red rock crabs.   They are generally smaller than the Dungeness and harder to clean, but the meat is just as tasty.  There are no sex or size limits on the red rocks, but I generally keep only the biggest ones:

“Pablo”. In recipe above is supposed to be “Panko”

Bluelight;  we missed the Mastic Beach Blue crab festival this weekend for my daughters summer kindergarten girls reunion!  It was a blast so an easy trade off!

Ken;  what a perk to living in your neck of the woods!  The photos look great; enjoy!

Looks good Ken!

But you should switch to Himalayan pink salt. That Morton's shit is not good for ya.

>>>>you should switch to Himalayan pink salt

Yep.  Already done.  Found an incredible deal on the pink stuff at Grocery Outlet.

I went to college on the Eastern Shore of MD and they served crabs and crab cakes in the freaking cafeteria on the reg (in season of course).  I can remember crab feasts with ENORMOUS crabs for a $5 buy in that included beer.... shitty beer but beer nonetheless.  #rivercrabsorstfu

I did love discovering Dungeness during my time in SF.  You could get them at the oriental grocery for $5 a piece.... yuge ones.  Pretty sure those times have changed.

I too, went from steamed Chesapeake Bay blue drabs to Pacific Dungeness --- I was like.. "what the fuck, they boil them and put butter on crabs? What do they think they are....lobster?"

I mean, I ate them and all, but always wanted to open a "real" crab house in SF. (There was that seafood place in Berkeley that was always packed.. I forget the name.)

Picnic table, newspaper, Old Bay, wooden mallets, Eastern Shore corn... maybe some potato salad, cold beer -- that's how it's done.

Can you Doctor it up with Chesapeake Bay seasoning?

How is the Blue Claw Crab yield out Maryland this year?

Went out for pizza with friends.  Thin crust square cut- half everything (they make it with green olives) and half sausage.

RIP O'Brycki's! My favorite place in Fells Point for crabs and crab cakes!!

Dungeness crabs are almost as good as lobster. Crabs are good steamed or boiled. What non-butter condiment do you put on your steamed crab?

Mallets are for rookies

No mallets allowed at our table :)

Yes, correct. I agree. I was just setting a mental picture for the uninitiated.

( I could even do without the picnic table, newspaper, and vegetables...)

Proper seasoning - usually Old Bay or some variation - and cold beverage are pretty important.

"Local" crabs have been running pretty good at the nearby semi-suburban outlets that don't import them from out-of-state (like they need to do in the off season).

Too much work.

>>Dungeness crabs are almost as good as lobster.

Agree. Actually, thinking about it I think crabs might win, since lobster typically only tastes like...lobster, while I find more taste variety in crabs. Maybe one should consider the work/ meat ratio plus take into account the sweet/ succulent index

>>>Crabs are good steamed or boiled.

>>>Crabs are good...

Agree

>>>...steamed or boiled...Disagree - Boiling takes away the mustard (not referring to Gulden's type)

>>What non-butter condiment do you put on your steamed crab? usually just the McCormick Old Bay cause we are talking only Maryland Blue Crab around here

>>Too much work.

Go get a mallet. Or open a can of spaghetti.

But I see your point..When out-of-towners visit in the winter when crabs are imported and small, I've heard steamed Blue Crabs referred to as pistachio nuts with legs (the kind that can't be opened).

But most people around here can open them with ease -- it's one of the things you learn as a kid.

Actually we invented crab cakes for folks like you. You like pictures. Here's some crab cake porn for you:
