David Byrne at Greeks shows 35 years ago

Forums:

I remember the shows, didn't know that David Byrne was there until afterwards.  He was living in the Bay area at the time

Fun shows, 35 years flies by pretty fast!  I remember the security guy sniffing my 2 liter soda pop bottle full of mushroom tea, grimacing, and saying go ahead, lol.  The Box of Rain story i've shared many times (they ended the show on the last night, started cleaning gear off the stage, opened the gates, only folks from the street poured in, 40 minutes later they played an epic version of this newly revisited gem.).   Got to smoke a joint in the physics dept lounge of Berkeley, did a little busking on Telegraph street...  and while on acid, had to change a flat tire after my deadhead friend / great singer / radio personality, tore a little tooo quickly around a curb.  The security cop, a large and benevolent African American story teller, shared with us several rock and roll related ditties from the Greek (like Dylan playing 3 weeks earlier, and Jerry was so fucked up, took 3 people to get him out of his chair).   Ah, how the time flies...

An INCREDIBLE SHOW!!!!!!!

Top five all-time in my personal book of greatest shows I've ever seen.

'86 GD, not so much.

Still, fun thread.

Those 86 Greeks were likely the sloppiest shows I saw, still, if you corrected it in your head, was brilliant (LOL).

>>>if you corrected it in your head<<<

THAT...... is a big league skill.

And one that can go a very long way in enjoying late-era Grateful Dead shows.

Personally, I was on-&-off with that skill.

Cool stories and pics!

I've always thought that Byrne probably appreciated the Grateful Dead's highly unique system of dynamic disorder. As someone who's chemical makeup made it impossible for him to just take the ride as opposed to designing and steering it, he was probably wistful of the experience.

The dude liked his Peruvian Marching Powder, and there was a lot of it around that tour.  The Saturday night show featured the Len Bias "He's Gone".   Byrne was there for the Sunday show, which started earlier and was over by sunset.  It was the best of a somewhat lackluster set of shows, and had a more festive vibe.  I had a blast tripping out on the lawn up top, and was hanging out talking with some friends afterwards when it became clear they were going to come back out.  Phil seemed to be in a really good mood.  The Box Of Rain along with the China-Rider that ended the 1st set on Saturday were my favorite moments of these 3 shows.  Turned out to be the only shows I've ever seen there.  Average shows nonetheless, it is an amazing venue, with such an iconic view of the Bay.  Hope I get back some day.

The weird thing is that Talking Heads had ceased being a touring band at this point, as they didn't go on the road again after the Speaking In Tongues tour ended in early 1984 in New Zealand.  I bet Byrne was fascinated by Deadheads, and wonder if he had concerns about the Talking Heads attracting a similar gypsy caravan if they were to go back to touring.  They didn't break up until 1991, and never toured for the Little Creatures, True Stories or Naked albums.  Guess they were making enough off the album sales and didn't care about the touring dollars.

I used to play professional rules semi-competitive croquet. My favorite, most frequent matchup was Dead Heads (the team I was on) vs Talking Heads (serious fans). We played music onto the court and it was always fun to hear either group's sounds. The court was cut out of a forest, the little clubhouse was hand built with stained glass windows, and the good food and treats were plentiful. Nice memories.

I've mentioned the movie True Stories by David Byrne before but don't know if any of you have seen it. If not, do. It's funny and strange and musical, acted by an ensemble of well-knowns. Find it, it's worth it.
