...end of spring 92 tour

Sping 92 was the final straw. I don't remember how many shows i saw, but they were awful.

Damn. The last 4 were pretty good. I heard Atlanta shows to start the tour were hot.

Saw a few shows in 92.  The band  tried to make up for a feeble Garcia but could do little.  it was  the beginning of the  Jeriatric years.

3-2 not one new song

for my ears, the end of that tour (Shoreline > Vegas in May) was the last stuff I consistently enjoyed.

In some ways, JGB was starting to eclipse the GD at this point...

^ EXACTLY

I saw 8 shows on this tour. I wish I had seen just one. The first night of Hamilton was great even though Dark Star not that good, The Other One and Standing on the Moon were EPIC and the best 20 minutes of music I saw in 1992

Which 8 did you see? I happen to really like that Darkstar :)

3-21..I actually like this HelpSlipFranks better than the one played earlier in the tour in Hampton.  Plus the So many Roads set closer is pretty great.  I really like the Terrapin too with the nice jam into drums.

Agree about JGB. Saw all 16 JGB shows and 20 Dead shows that year. 12/16 was my favorite GD show of the year.

Dont really remember any JGB shows that were real clunkers, but most weren't as hot as the 1990 shows.

If you're into it,  the drums>space from the second night at the Palace,  3-24, is unique.  Not only do you get the train horn aftet a really freaky set up... but there is a very eerie 'Scarecrow' space complete with playback of Wizard of Oz recordings like,  '...if I only had a brain'. The entire space segment gets downright scary and might be some of the darkest Grateful Dead music since Miami 89. Check it out.  :)

Found some more video of 3-16 Philly..

The third song Speedway Boogie played at the final show of the tour (3-24-92) might be my favorite version after they brought it back in 91.

Beaming and blooming

Spring '92.

The What's wrong with the sound ? tour.

Haha OK. My favorite New Speedway is unquestionably from 6/17/91. There's a few more from 91 I would put over the Palace one, like 3/17 or the one from Deer Creek

I still consider 3/21/92 one of the worst shows I ever saw. The Terrapin is just bad

At least they hadn't started playing Baba O'Reilly yet, which was only cool once

>>The What's wrong with the sound ? tour.

No, this was the what's wrong with Jerry tour. Dan Healy was still employed

Jerry wasn't the reason you couldn't feel Phil on the floor.

Damn Franklin.  Those are all great. How do you feel about the RFK95 version?  I liked the vinnie ones too especially the ones I sa w deer creek 92, palace 93&94...but that one I saw at the palace 92 was my only one with hornsby that I saw and that 3rd song Speedway Boogie from palace 92 always stood out. I think I rremember hornsby really getting into those final 2 shows at the palace that tour...kicking his bench out of the way to stand and play trying to engage Garcia.

Alot of talk about how good the Morning Dew was the first night. Spring 92 is the tour when the drums really started getting out there with rainforest-ish feeling alot of cool tribal beats and the train horn (and jackhammer in Atlanta)

Buckeye 92 and MSG 93 were the two baba O'Reilly's I saw and enough time had passed between them, for me, so I enjoyed them both.

I think there was plenty of apathy running through the entire organization by 1992. Brent died and the train kept rollin' and everyone numbed themselves in their own way. The money helped with that and probably made people lazy too. I guess I don't remember anything wrong with the sound per se. Phil used a different bass in 1992, I think he started using it the fall 91

I was at Buckeye 92. I remember that I found $20 on the ground. I had fun at the show but thought it was musically disappointing, as did the people I went with. The 2nd night of Giants Stadium and 2nd night Charlotte were good but still a step down from the previous year's highs

This  3rd night of Philly has a nice second set (and decent 1st too) but is also a fantastic recording. Plenty of Phil in that Eyes

Killer source thanks for the link and your insight Franklin

This show is actually quite good too. The 2nd set setlist not impressive but Jerry is dialed in nicely and the Corinna > Playin reprise played very well. Nice source.

I saw Landover, Copps and the Palace on this tour so since I was talking smack about it I' ve checked out some shows I didn't see. I'm not recommending a couple I listened to

Atlanta?

No, but I'm going to check some of that run out. I forgot I went to Hampton also, which is hilarious since at the time I spent so much time and energy scoring tickets. They went on sale only a week before the show, no mailorder, and we went to Hampton Coliseum to buy them (2 days before they went on sale because rumors were thick and heavy)

Nice. Do you remember which night of Hampton you liked better?

I thought both shows were a bit disappointing having been to Hampton 88 & 89.....but they were fun. Sort of a cooling down of that venue. The rumors of songs they were going to break out were rife and they didn't break out anything in the end.

First night Atlanta 92 has a very well played 2nd set. Hot Saint, killer Scarlet > Fire (WAY better than the one deep in the set at Philly 92) and a fantastic Black Peter. I had never listened to that show before (or any of this run)

Hey Franklin the second night in Atlanta..no 'new' songs. (I posted FOB recordings earlier In this thread for all 3 nights, no sbds on the archive).  Also thanks again for your input.

I found some earl 92 Jerry video...

There are soundboards of those Atlanta 92 shows now, the whole tour I think, uploaded relatively recently. I prefer auds for sure for 90s shows though sometimes check out the board. Both Atlanta 2nd & 3rd night are solid shows, better than the Hampton run. Nice China Doll

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6FyJXk_X6c8

The last great dead show I saw this tour.  The Knick  I don't remember the date.  Great Half Step.

Went the next year.  I was row two right in front of Jerry.  The man looked like shit.

God what a waste.

Jerry looks 10 years older than he did in '89.

Sometimes watching post '91 Dead is just depressing.  "It's always the worst when the mighty fall."

They played the knick spring 91 ..no Hornsby , and in spring 93

I think 3-28-93 they opened with Half Step..great show

Thanks for filling in my foggy memory.

>>>>>this was the what's wrong with Jerry tour.

Yeah, he was literally dying up there.

Had a "heart attack" on his B-day in 92.

Barely survived to play again at the end of the year.

8-1-92 jgb played Irvine and on the 2nd they played Chula Vista. ..which was the final show of a little mini California 6 show tour.

So I don't think that happened on his birthday

3/16/92 was the only show I ever walked out of early.  Just terrible, even the Dew was tepid.

that spectrum run was a bummer.

saw the first & third nights.

we got in on spinner 'tickets'.

After 90 Knick it was all downhill from here...

Hornsby's only Spectrum shows

Healy played "If I Only Had A Brain" over the PA as the crowd dispersed after the 3/24/92 show in Auburn Hills. How true after a short 4 show run that I did. Lol!

Yepper! I also recall "If I Only Had a Brain" coming on after encore and it was also teased 2-3 times in Space as well.....I had to revisit based on gregulator's Drumz>Space recommendation and, I agree, it is worth checking out!

Good Shows! I saw Hamilton and Auburn Hills that tour and in Detroit my Chef buddy brought a side of beef and we made kabobs in the parking lot and wound up giving most of them away for free when cops said we could not sell them...and then they gladly stuffed their faces too.

Awesome.  The scarecrow space -entire drums>space segment was spooky that night. The Dew the first night is  good as well

Greg this thread needed an image! Another show my friends and I enjoyed very much. JGB on a Bay Area college campus, hell yea!

I was living in Humboldt and on the afternoon of this show a 7.2 earthquake hit off the Lost Coast of Humboldt. The next morning there were

aftershocks of 6.5 and 6.6. Needless to say I was glad I was down in the Bay Area for the show!

Drove home the next day, took a deep breath, and 4 days later 10 nights of the JGB and Garcia/Grisman started at the Warfield. Went to every night but

missed Jerry playing with Dylan on the days off.

Had to go back to school for a minute, can't win them all...

That's a hell of a run local, did you stick around for the GD west coast shows in may? They were like a week later -cal expo 5-19-21, shoreline 5-23-25...I also noticed jerry band played April 29, 30 at the Warfield as well.

And thank you for adding the image..my old phone won't post pics

Greg, '92 was a bit crazed for me. Yes, I went to Expo and Shoreline (had to miss Vegas). Saw every JGB and Garcia/Grisman show that year. (There were only 21, all in California, no problem).

It broke down like so:

JGB--Kaiser  2-7-92

GD--Oakland  2-22-92

GD--Oakland  2-23-92

GD--Oakland  2-24-92

JGB--Event Center, San Jose State  4-25-92

JGB--Warfield  4-29-92

JGB--Warfield  4-30-92

JGB--Warfield  5-1-92

JGB--Warfield  5-2-92

JGB--Warfield  5-3-92

  (Bob Dylan--Warfield  5-4-92  Couldn't attend)

  (Bob Dylan--Warfield  5-5-92  Couldn't attend---Garcia played with

Dylan on Cats in the Well and Idiot Wind).

Garcia/Grisman--Warfield  5-7-92

Garcia/Grisman--Warfield  5-8-92

Garcia/Grisman--Warfield  5-9-92

Garcia/Grisman--Warfield  5-10-92

Garcia/Grisman--Warfield  5-11-92

After the above Cal-Expo and Shoreline shows, went back east, visited family and went to:

GD--Rich Stadium  6-6-92

GD--Richfield         6-8-92

GD--Richfield         6-9-92

GD--Albany            6-11-92 (could only do the first night).

JGB--Cal-Expo       7-24-92

JGB--Shoreline      7-26-92

JGB--Universal Amphitheater, Universal City  7-29-92

JGB--Ventura         7-31-92

JGB--Irvine             8-1-92   (Garcia's 50th)

JGB--Chula Vista   8-2-92

We had tickets for the Warfield on August 6, 7, 8; but of course those didn't happen,

canceled along with the whole fall tour. (Strange thing about that was those Warfield shows

were announced and went on sale less than two weeks before the actual shows, which was crazy to me at the time.

They went on sale the day after Shoreline, I still have one of the tickets with the purchase date on it.)

JGB--Oakland Coliseum   10-31-92   Comeback show

GD--Compton Terrace    12-5-92

GD--Compton Terrace    12-6-92

GD--Oakland                   12-11-92

GD--Oakland                   12-16-92

GD--Oakland                   12-17-92

JGB--Warfield                  12-19-92

JGB--Warfield                  12-21-92  (no show scheduled on 12/20).

Fun Year.

Thanks Greg. This helped me take my mind away from terrible disasters, at least for a few minutes.

Only Warfield shows I know of scheduled for 9 PM. Why the change from 8?
Shows canceled.

That's awesome.  I also see when you made it out to Richfield you were rewarded with a nice (for vince era) darkstar

I also wasn't aware of just when jerry got sick so this clears that up for me thanks

I did this stretch of shows. Overall, Garcia in good spirits and shape.

Starting in Oakland in early '93 he appeared to be a little off, even his body posture. Subtle at first but apparent. For me anyway, the end of '92 was a bit of a demarcation line.

Those extra two JGB shows after the Dec run in Oakland were a nice bonus since no NYE shows scheduled in 92
