Fillmore West location reopens as SVN West

Forums:

I was surprised to hear that shows are happening there again.

https://svnwest.com/info/

The two King Gizzard shows that just happened there are a bit of a one-off for the place as a concert venue. The company that has the lease is a special events company, using the building for private parties, conferences & such. Goldenvoice/AEG put on these two shows and they may do others, but they have their regular venues the Regency and the Warfield. I don't think there are any other shows planned there at the moment.

I was planning on going last night and was excited to get into that legendary room, but I've been out of commission lately and couldn't go. Reports I've heard from the two KG shows are that the venue is not really prepared or set up well to be a music venue. Various friends have told me that the room was really hot & stuffy with no ventilation, the sound was bad from a rented & skimpy sound system, the stage was small & very low and in general there was no ambiance at all.

The only good things I heard about the place were that the large patio was nice to get out of the stuffy heat and Modelo in cans was $5.00.

But I also heard that water was $6.00, no drinking fountains and concessions wouldn't give a cup for water from the bathroom.

It's too bad because it's a special place, but there are lots of really good places in SF and the building is still slated to be torn down at some point, so I doubt the plan is to use it regularly as a music venue.

Still, even if the sound is bad and it's hot I hope I can get inside that room once before it's torn down.

Edit: I just saw this posted on facebook by a friend about the second King Gizzard show...

"the sound was way better. they figured out how to cool it off, so no sweat fest. the crowd was bigger. different security tonight up front, and different bar on the deck. it really was completely different from last night"

So that's nice to hear, whether they put more shows in there or not.

That place looks to have as much in common with The Fillmore West as a chopped Model A hot rod does with the original car.

Whoa!!!

Seeing that picture of the room sure gave me chills big time

And renewed memories of the greatest grateful dead (and Pigpen) sequence of my life

Stephen> tell> 11> love light> blissed / out mind blown

and leave it on

Or was it 11 and then tell.....   hard to tell

Thanks for the info.

Hey Lance and LLTD. You guys going to the Stones? I'm still on the fence. Terrible venue.

Great band.

Going to complete the cycle

stones at Altamont in  69 and then 50 years later

 just go with low expectations and revel in their legacy and the fact that they’re fucking still playing

It’s only rock ‘n’ roll

I know they will most likely do a great show. I've never seen a bad one.

(Granted, I haven't been seeing them since '69).

My issue is with the shit venue, not the band.

How did you feel about their performance at Altamont, aside from the mayhem?

as an old man---- i often repeat myself, but you asked...

the power and image of the stones at Altamont (a visual only equaled by a twitch on Jimi's face - making all this stuff happen....)

 mind boggling - embedded for eternity in my mind

~~~~Sympathy for the Devil~~~
The Red and Black cape of Anarchy, swirling, with arms in the air, MIck's energy, emotion, power, unbridled, unrivaled
crackling bolts of energy in the air - it was like lightning bolts, hard to describe with words..
amazing,
and the power of the music
the power of the band
the power of the day, and of the crowd - unrivaled
and it IS rock and roll
- 4 born, 4 dead -     last minute plans can be a cluster fuck
The greatest band in the world? .... YES
it was awesome ..... for me at least
oh, GTTS
As always the ticket prices for acceptable (field) seats for the Stones are ridiculous, but the shit venue is only 15 minutes from my home so I was semi-planning on showing up on Sunday and trying to just get in cheap and wing it from there, and if not head back home, no big whoop. But that would require a 2+ mile hike to & from my car where I park without fee's, and at the moment walking from one end of my house to the other is a real challenge so I doubt I'll make it.
I'll be disappointed if I don't see them, but when they were last in the area in 2013 playing the Oakland and San Jose arena's I saw both shows, and both were outstanding, especially the San Jose show w/ John Fogerty & Bonnie Raitt sit-ins, and during that San Jose show I remember thinking that this very possibly Could Be The Last Time, and if that turns out to be true I'm OK with that great show being the last time I see the one & only Rolling Stones.
Lantz stop kidding yourself no rationalization
GTTFS
Can you guess what the F stands for
i want to see the stones as i have never....
but 2 tickets...are just more than i can justify.
rose bowl...
Lance, sorry to hear you're having mobility problems. My wife has the same problem,
which is one reason i probably won't go.
LLTD, thanks for sharing. Yes I'm sure you've posted about it in the past but I didn't see it.
We had tickets for the Phoenix show before the tour was postponed, but decided not to go
to the rescheduled show.
I saw the Oakland show Lance mentioned, it was great, saw them at the Wiltern Theater in LA, that was special,
many other times, but there's nothing like a full-blown Stones stadium show.
I just may GTTS.
Turtle, you should too. Especially since you've never seen them. You can probably get in fairly cheap.
Wow, that collection of articles about the Carousel time is really interesting.
Time and people are a funny thing. Reading those articles you get a clear sense of hippyer-than-thou superiority and "it's not like it used to be man!", all just three years after the whole thing began.
We can't help ourselves.
And Jammin' Joel, I want to go but I fucked up my leg last week and I start work next week, so I must stay on IR throughout the weekend, which means no JRAD either.
I never get to have any fun.
That’s a bummer my friend, I have a spare wheelchair and I can push you AND we never know how many more trips around the sun we get (or they get)
Please let me know if there’s anything I can do... no more HHS as you know, But you can’t totally get rid of me, yet
At a minimum hopefully I’ll try and rock the fuck out in your honor  as it is kind of a special weekend
The frost and the stones ...oh well I should shut my hippier than thou self up After once more commenting how fucking lucky I’ve been
Yeah it’s never like it used to be
Thanks for the kind offer JJ, but I'm not quite ready to be pushed around in a wheelchair just yet.
And remember, today is tomorrow's not like it used to be, so whoop it up this weekend so you can reminisce about it in the future.
 Ralph Gleason on June 4, 1968:
At midnight Tuesday night it was a beautiful scene at the Carousel Ballroom. People came in off the street with late election news and inside there was a long jam session going on with all kinds of guitar players and saxophones and rhythm men and on the floor there was more dancing than I've seen anywhere in months.
Throughout the ballroom an outstanding feature was the peacefulness and the joy as a wondrous assortment of people relaxed. There were Hells Angels and hippies, many black people and many long-haired youth. It seemed for a moment like the hope of the future.
And then I went outside, got into the car and punched the radio button only to hear a voice saying "...when Senator Kennedy was shot tonight." And the terrible real world came crashing in on me again.
Rslph Gleason was the best
Speaking of the olden days i used to love reading the pink section
 And also identify with the melting pot time and place
Great news- great memories of that ballroom 50 years ago.
last time i saw the stones was 1997, giants stadium, 80,000 of my closest friends. it was good, didn't make my top 10 shows of all time, (i've seen them in much smaller venues) that doesn't translate to they suck, just not my cup of tea to see anyone with that many people
A tip on Stones show. I went Wednesday in Seattle and we got GA on the back of the field.  Early in the show we ran into security who were giving out wristbands to go to the front pit. We grabbed three and spent the night down in front of Keith.  Was a great surprise and bonus to a fun night.
