Dude

Numerous emails went unanswered. Hoping all is well.

Sure the emails went to ".ca" instead of ".com"? Don't remember seeing anything but it's been a very peculiar 2019 for me.

Wife took me to the hospital Jan 7 assuming my appendix had burst. CT scan found my stomach ache was caused by a duodenal ulcer that had burst a 2 inch hole in my stomach. Less than 90 minutes after we got to the hospital we were told if I don't have surgery now, I likely wouldn't see lunch tomorrow. Surgery it is then.

10 days in the hospital then sent home - but not for good. Home for 9 days when my scar starts to swell and I tell my wife we need to head back to the hospital because something isn't right. Couple minutes out from the hospital and part of my scar starts leaking an impressive amount of "pus" - a line of stinky grey/green foam with the texture of toothpaste. When I got out of the truck and tried to walk in to the ER the "pus" turned to frothy blood so I walked the last 30 feet into an ER with women and children screaming and crying assuming I had been stabbed. Excellent, I will gladly accept moving to the front of the line...

Not stabbed - just sepsis shock from an infection the size of a grapefruit starting to shut down organs. I was conscious for maybe 10 minutes getting blood work done before my wife says I blacked out and they took me straight into surgery. Another 7 day stay (had a Super Bowl party in my room with 3 nurses) before being sent home with daily nurse visits for the next month.

Third and hopefully final surgery last week. Just started wearing pants with buttons and zippers this week - track pants or pj's until then. Haven't been able to lift more than 2 pounds since being released the 2nd time, but I am starting to get back to normal.

For as much as it sucked (and it really sucked), it was a very effective way to drop 40 pounds in about 6 weeks and I have been able to keep it off without being able to exercise/move.

I would be curious to find out what a medical adventure like this would cost in the States. I haven't worked in over a decade so none of my own benefits but some from my wife (private room for both stays). We calculated that our out of pocket came in at close to $200 - parking plus the cost of the TV rental.

Holy crap!  Glad you're still with us.

good to see even with the setback you are doing better. as for the email i used, its the same one i've used for years :) you know me by a different screen name. i'll be in touch of site

Wow, what an adventure. Glad you're OK, FOTF, and it's working out for the better. Best of luck to you in recovery.  What country are you in?

Don't even start to think about cost in the states.

Met a woman who did 28 out-patient radiation treatments for throat cancer and they're presenting her with a bill for $21,000 her Medicare supplement doesn't want to cover.

She's low-income with $1,350 a month income and $44 a month left when bills are paid. In-patient? Covered. Out-patient? At least 20% is yours.

Then they said you're good on the throat, but now you have lung cancer. Next doc visit for follow up, not so good.

The throat cancer is coming back and they need to remove a tumor between her lungs and neck and then do chemo. Poor gal. 74 and lives alone.

Guess I was lucky. I'm cancer free 15 years, in the neck, took tonsils and 104 nodes. No chemo just radiation. My major issue was to have it done at Sloan or across the street where my wife works, total coverage either way and all the docs train together so whats the dif. I pity anyone without coverage or who votes GOP to eliminate ACA. Not a huge Obama fan but he got that fucker passed and the GOP STILL has no alternative a decade later, FUCK McConnell

FUCK CANCER

Oh wow, that's a crazy story. I'm so sorry you've been through all that and so glad you're on the other side of it all. Welcome back! (I've been thinking of you without knowing about 2019, it's good to hear you're alive and getting better.)

It would be hard to calculate the cost of your adventures in the States because treatments and costs are different by location. That's another crazy story. You can count on it being thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars.

Hey MyMyHeyHey - I know that dude.

I'm up in the land of pinko commie socialists - Canada. Fuck Cancer - sure, but Fuck Canada just on principle, eh...

It's that sort of nightmare that is so foreign to us, Slick. When our kids were born we got their health cards in the mail before we got their birth certificates - free health care is a birth right up here (for now). I am pondering making the almost 2 hour trek to Buffalo Wednesday so my rocker son can hit some Beartooth show he had to miss up here because of my injury. If we go we'll be in the US for under 24 hours but I will still pick up travel insurance before we go - just in case. It is unimaginable having to pay for things like X-rays, casts, etc. to us because we've never had to. Anytime we cross the border, we're spending $16/day in travel insurance to cover the first million in medical costs...

Now for some fun visuals - about a week after the first time I went home. The camera is on my lap - odd thing to bring up but the second photo can be confusing...

Staples out, couple of drainage devices went through the couple holes out on their own. The most painful experience of the entire procedure was getting the bottom drain pulled out that lower horizontal hole. Might have been easier if the drain that came out was smaller than the opening they cut - it goes in sideways, but it doesn't come out that way.

Here's me this afternoon - the second belly button is the blow-out from the infection. For the first 4 weeks I had a nurse come over daily to change the gauze strips used to fill the just over an inch deep void in the blow-out. For the first couple days, the nurse could see the stitches in my stomach when changing the gauze inside it. Nasty. Had a battery powered negative pressure unit taped over the void for about 3 weeks that did a great job helping to close the hole as well. Trust me when I say it gets better looking each day...

Unseen added bonus? I can now wear all those late 80's-90's GD shirts I had tucked away in a storage tote. Yesterday was LA Coliseum '91, have a paper thin '92 Rich Stadium drying on the rack - much too delicate for the dryer - but I never thought I'd be able to wear that thing again.

Holy heartburn that's some incredible shit.

Someone's looking out for your ass.

And thank God for your wife too.

Back on your feet soon bro !
