I hate to admit it, but I create a lot of trash, and most people I know do too; it's just not out in the streets. And we pollute too, mostly when we drive our cars around.

I was woken up today by a homeless chick in my house wanting to use my shower...  again!   Last time I was working the garden, came back inside and she was using it!  She apparently knows that I befriend a long time homeless guy, and expected the same treatment.  This time she was ruder, refused to leave until I called the cops, which this time I did...  one of 3 F'd up things to happen today, argh!

Philosophically, I support helping anyone down on their luck, and have been giving away socks to homeless (and the rare coat) for 30 years.  I just don't want to deal with it when I'm asleep in my bed FFS!

But the truth out west is ugly, Boise ID has been shipping ALL of it's homeless to Portland OR for a decade (more?).  15 years ago, SF and S. Carolina came up with a program to bus people back east to where there was housing, which didn't last long, as it filled up fast... but the seed was sown, and now Republican mayors / governors have been paying homeless to be bussed out to sanctuary cities out west, increasing the homeless populations exponentially, all the problems that go with that can now be blamed on Democratic policies...   well played / brilliant strategy, and completely void of all Christian values these sex bots claim to own.  Here in Corvallis, this practice just started up a few months ago (we're a smallish town, 60k at most) , and several tent cities literally popped up overnight.  I've now got 2 different screamers that go by the house a few times a day, welcome to the community...

There is a huge and highly visible unsheltered population in this town.  Its especially bad downtown because all the high rise office buildings are still empty because of the Covid, which has allowed the unhoused to come in a set up shop.   Probably the biggest issue the city is facing at this point.   They have set up some organized "tiny home" villages and they are much cleaner and organized than the tent and tarp camps you see downtown and along the freeway.  It also makes it easier to provide social services and I would like to see more of those set up as, if anything, a temporary solution to this problem.

One thing I don't get is the sheer amount of trash generated by the camps.   Cumulatively, I camp out between one to two months a year and tend to keep a relatively tidy camp without throwing trash everywhere.  Not sure why the unhoused people don't throw their trash into hefty sacks which I am sure would be easy enough to distribute and arrange for regular pickup.   I heard that there was a town down in California that was giving out $20 gift cards to the urban campers in exchange for picking up trash.   Sounds like a good investment.    

Better to discuss one of the root causes of houselessness: The de-funding of public education and social services since the 60s by Republican administrations. The failure of trickle-down economics.

Nobody  here with housing insecurity,  suffering depression, painful conditions, mental illness, maybe dealing with pain and opioid addiction, drug use and/or  alcoholism.  maybe just very lonely, suffering and  feeling the need for compassion.

I mean, it would just be so ironic for anyone dealing with those issues  to be seeking compassion, while demonstrating none.

Rob, something (or more than 1 thing) triggered your feelings today about the unhoused. It's a mess out there, and overwhelming. I hope you're okay.

People are suffering out there without support they should have, whether it's trash bags, or tiny houses or tents for shelter (with water and toilet boxes nearby), things that our cities and counties can provide in conjunction with organizations already working with the transient and houseless populations. There are a lot of people out there who aren't able to manage their own affairs because of their mental health, physical health, issues we may not know anything about. It's rough out there, especially for women and more especially for women of color.

There are organizations in Eugene (and other places) that are building tiny "Conestoga wagons", little buildings that people can sleep in, lock their stuff in during the day, giving people security and safe places to sleep. Imagine, feeling insecure all the time... never feeling safe.

I don't get the trash thing, either. But holding a place in our hearts and minds for people who seem to have no other options seems like the least we can do. And if we are secure we can donate some of  our stimulus money to non-profit organizations who feed or offer shelter to people who need it.

There would be no homeless if we didn't go to war and spend all our money on that and give people who illegally cross into this country free everything. How fucked up is it to give a Honduran who sneaks across the border a free apartment and monthly stripend and free medical and dental yet a Vet or retired person born here and who worked his whole life paying taxes is living on the street. FUCK THAT!!!

Mike I've traveled all over the world. Been to 6 continents so don't try to blow me off as ignorant. I 've been 4 times in Honduras and Guatemala. More than a year total time. I know how it is there. I have sympathy for all peoples that are suffering and their are lots all over the globe even here in the US os A, but we can't save and help everyone. That's up to planet earth and if saying America first is bad then call me bad. Of course the planet is in dire times but would you not help your family over your neighbor. Hopefully both at the same time.

It was and there are.  I live 2 miles from the Cross Roads shelter which is the hub of homeless services in my state.

I am generally empathetic towards them but I see the same people standing on the same street corners every day- like it's a job.  I'm more inclined to compassion when it looks like someone new standing there- someone who doesn't report to the corner like it's a job- someone who is in a jam and hasn't planned to be there.  Last year I donated my 20 lb turkey from work to the shelter.  I find the amount of trash they produce and leave on the corners unsightly.  It's a problem- a growing one around here too.  I will be rightfully livid if/when my daughter sees this man urinate in front of our house in broad daylight.

What would Zippy or any homeless American think of an illegal getting all the benefits he doesn't get.

Jay, I know that you are a compassionate man and a fine father of a young child.

2 miles is a bit far for someone to walk to urinate, and I hope there are more private places he could choose. I've noticed that in Eugene people come back to the same corners day after day. They've found a good spot, I guess. It is like a job and they've got a good attendance record. There were turf tussles at certain corners in Eugene a few years ago, but something changed and that lessened.

There are a lot of available jobs in Eugene but mostly for people who are somewhat skilled, have access to showers/hygiene stations, and will show up. It's too bad the panhandlers with good attendance on certain corners can't find the places who need workers.

Baloney. There is no simple IF to this issue.

There is no easy or singular answer. dollitle doesn't have one, the Great Racket doesn't have one, conservatives don't have one, liberals don't have one, no one has one, because there just isn't an easy or even a difficult single answer to this diabolical issue (although bussing the homeless away does work to a degree locally - but then I figure that those who bus them away would just as soon gas them if they could get away with it).

It's a massive, incredibly complex, out-of-control mess, and no on in particular is to blame, and no one has "the answer".

There are many variations of homeless, from families living in motels and campers to people who have been pushed to the edge by an insanely capitalistic society.

And then there is the drugged out zombie nation, a segment perpetuated and accelerated by clueless homeless coalitions in (primarily) liberal enclaves. Under the banner of compassion, they've been given free reign, no matter what the consequences. Once you give a segment of the population the ability to sleep anywhere, defecate anywhere, break into cars with little or no retribution, then that becomes the societal norm. We can dump billions more into services but without root level policy changes, it won't change a thing.

Republican Mayors / Govs have been shipping their homeless to sanctuary cities for over a decade now...  the problem didn't just explode, the population exploded, and that's why...  has everything to do with relocation policies, and not the liberal safety net ones being blamed!  Didn't take long for resources to run out, private biz closing their bathrooms to the public, yada yada...  

Talk about an excellent strategy, you physically remove all your homeless / mental health individuals, and ship them to SF, then blame SF policies as being a failure.  Now that's leadership, that's courage, that's one of an extremely long and ever growing list of reasons I'll never vote republican!
