Hardly shocking.  The mafia has evolved to a point where it's mostly a bunch of greasy old men betting on sports and swindling knockoff olive oil.  Yawn.

Phil's bass in pic is called Godfather.

"Big Brown" seems to have become the preferred moniker during the new millennium but I always thought the Godfather sounded way cooler

that bass has a lot of knobs

It sure the fuck does, weird Steve.

it sure the fuck does

Godfather does sound way cooler.

Always thought it was Big Brown.

Thanks guys, almost feels as good as getting carded...almost.

nick said you can't joke about it in sicily or on facebook.

Christopher Columbus is a hero and should be treated thusly

No offense, Jay, but you’re seriously under-selling their continuing influence and activities. I spent a good chunk of this year living in Italy and no one there talks or thinks of them like that.

Oh man, I just watched Episode 3 of Narcos - Mexico last night, 'The Godfather'. So good. Soooooo good.

Perhaps you are right.  I guess my comment was a little shortsighted in that I was thinking more of the current state of La Cosa Nostra in the US.  I live in an area that was a former haven for the Italian underworld and it just doesn't really exist anymore around here.

you mean New Jersey? Have you hung out by the Port of Newark lately? The Mob still has sway at the docs

RI/MA.  The rackets are pretty much just old guys extorting strip clubs and betting on sports (which is now legal).

The godfather -- semolina loaf, provolone, mortedella, sopresatta, proscuitto, olive spread, evo, arugula and red onions.

I bet I could still get a loan up in Worcester but I hear you. They still have a big presence in IATSE in Providence though. You have to hire the one-armed carpenter named Vito at the Dunkin Donuts center if you like it or not.

>it just doesn't really exist anymore around here.

The Albanians/Macedonians(though dont ever refer to one as the other) -- just a jaunt across the Adriatic -- have taken over a good amount of the street level operations.

And just as we like to create the facade that 'Islamic' terrorist are a tight knit bunch don't ever think of the 'Mafia' as organized.

Interesting.  I've always had a fascination with greasy underworld dealings.  Are you familiar with Season 1 of the Crimetown podcast from Gimlet media?  It chronicles Buddy Cianci and Raymond Patriarca.  Great listening:
