Meat Puppets

Steve Earle, Calexico, Betty Lavette, Dave Alvin, Emmylou Harris.

Hot Tuna

Bettye LaVette is awesome.  Saw her with just her piano player; full band should be really kick-ass.

I'd love to see Dave Alvin live, based on what I've heard and seen (probably last year's HSBG set) on the toobs.

Bought my plane tickets. Want to see Hayes Carll for the first time (heard so much), and the Dusters of course, and the Milk Carton Kids are great. I'm sure they'll be more.

I enjoyed Hayes Carll so much I forget who he was opening for.

His name always looks like a typo.

HC is awesome. I have 3 of his CDs. Saw him couple yrs ago at HSBF. Great show.    "She Left Me For Jesus" was the song that hooked me in the beginning, but he has many great songs.

Slickrock... I would like to buy you a cup of whatever it is you drink when you are in the City.

Cool! I look forward to it. It's a French red wine from 1887 from the Bordeaux region. A little pricey but good. Bring yer credit card. LOL. We'll have to connect.

I am not sure how large my credit is, but I am pretty sure it's not that large.

See you in October out in the park.

Lucky for you two hardly strictly is BYOB

Between the cultural appropriation and the militarization of the place - I’m out. Been a good run. 14 of ‘em. Lots of grate memories.

have fun freaks.

I'm in for the weekend this year. Lots of great musicians booked, and several others in town. Hopefully the changes to security don't get into the way too badly.

>>>Lots of cultural appropriation going on in that concessions menu. That is Bay Area food, I can't wait!

I’m keeping an open mind about the changes. And planning on arriving early as usual because I expect it’s going to take a long time to get through  security screening. If the new measures help with crowd control and make it possible to move between stages with more ease and limit the number of people coming into the area, it could be a vast improvement.

so they should just serve tofu, hotdogs and hamburgers?

Thom is offended by ethnic food-

make food  concessions great again?!

And this is SF, you’re not in Kansas, snowflake

got the shovels out

gonna start building some tunnels  between stages...

The changes will only be a major issue if they are going too use metal detectors & do a search (if they do that it will be a madhouse trying to get in) but if they just do a visual check as people walk in then it shouldn't be too much harder to get in, as most people enter & exit those four ways anyway.

To me what made the event truly unique was that it was just the park, wide open like any other day except there happened to be lots of bands playing, not like an actual "event" with fences & all the usual restrictions. It looks like people can still bring in alcohol and other junk, and the fences likely won't make that much actual difference, but it will change the vibe for me.

But then I stopped going a few years ago because the whole thing was too much hassle so it really doesn't matter to me, but it's still too bad that fear continues to rule the day.

Because if somebody wants to shoot up the place or set off a bomb they'll still easily be able to hop the fence and do their evil deeds. All these changes are for show, and that's what's too bad.

As for Thom, I think he's just annoyed that it's a free event.

Free?!??! Leftist socialism!!!!

so no coolers, but you can still bring in beer and wine

Thom

no words are “appropriate”

Clear backpacks are in my cart

where there is a will......

There IS s way

Well, fuck.

Out of all those bands, I recognize about 6, and the only ones I'd really want to see are Hot Tuna and EmmyLou. And her? Mainly to see if she's still one of the most beautiful women ever.

What are the best warm beers?

Clear plastic bag with a frozen ice pack or two should work for ya, Slacker. That's what I'll be doing. If I see ya, I'll be happy to give ya a cold beer.

Just bought a cheap clear backpack from DALIX for $11.49 with free shipping and no tax. https://www.bestbackpack.com/clear-backpacks/

Don't care for the new policies for a few reasons, but I already reserved a flight so I'm in - this year. If it's too much BS, I hang with a friend and see the area. Definitely won't be as crowded.

I'm hoping the bands I'd really like to see do side gigs in the area, HSBG is an awesome event but I kind of hate navigating the huge crowds between the stages.

> If I see ya, I'll be happy to give ya a cold beer

No cans or bottles allowed either

No cans?

WHAT ABOUT CAMERAS AND ALCOHOL?

Cameras are ok (no tripods or intrusive equipment please). There will also be vendors on-site selling food and non-alcoholic beverages. No alcohol will be for sale in the park, however, alcohol is allowed as per park rules: no hard alcohol or glass is allowed; beer and wine in non-glass containers ONLY. Any hard alcohol brought to the gathering will be confiscated by SFPD and violators may be subject to fine.

Cans are lighter than glass and they don't break!

A dram in the flask on the hip and who's the wiser?

The melting ice is going make more puddles each day.

New fencing and rules indicate that the terrorists have won.

A friend who has gone to every year of HSBG festival asked me if I had my clear cooler for beer. He also said he has heard HSBG may be winding down after this year. We shall see. I don't have a clear cooler. Will leave the flask at home too. An October weekend in secure Golden Gate Park, Roarshock all jacked up on water, lemonade and iced tea... Great music, friends everywhere, should be another fun time. Hot Tuna, or Robert Plant . . .

Just got a couple clear bags and some freezer blocks.

Did a Recon at the site.

should have purchased stock in National Fence Rental...

but it's mostly new fencing around the outside perimeter to heard peeps to entry points. the inner fencing appears similar to previous years.

COLLAPSIBLE WAGONS<<

Good name for a one-off jamband festival conglom.

Maybe w/Dave Schools on bass.

It's always been set up for people to enter the main entrance next to the porch stage(JFK Drive and Transverse) and meander down JFK to the Exit at Spreckels Lake. The Bandwagon Stage(old Arrow stage location) is the only one you miss doing that.

Flying out tomorrow. Getting psyched for a great weekend. Looks like the weather is cooperating.

Are the polo grounds outside the fence?

Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley just started their set!

Wow! Joan just cut her set!

Feel better, sister!

I saw that, she was in the full sun and heat. Hope all is well.

Lebo and Friends are in the sun right now.  http://www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.com/2019/webcast/sun-swantowers.shtml

OK. So Mandarin Orange is the real deal.  What a phine set.

“How could you have more fun than that? What the hell is money for if it isn’t for something like that?”

F. Warren Hellman
Forbes, 2006

Meat Puppets were excellent! Can't wait to do it again next year.

you mean Mandolin Orange I think, Mark. and yes, tasty stuff

heard Joan is okay after her fainting spell.

Of course. Madolin. I knew that but thanks.

Wondering why Emmylou did not allow her set to be streamed?

Good to hear about Joan. That was a trip.

Many thumbs up

life is good

Damn if I didn't miss-spell it again.  Jees.    Mandolin.

Margot Price did not allow her set streamed either?     Anybody catch it?

Her Saturday set was streamed.  Good stuff.

Not on the archive. yet.

"Let there be songs to fill the air."

Turned out to be as much fun as usual. New security measures were not a lot of trouble. Other than Robert Plant on Saturday crowds were not outrageous. So much great music, and visiting wonderful old friends.

I don't know that Slickrock Stranger really exists, and I bet he has doubts about my existence too.

Looking forward to HSB20 in 2020!

Robert Plant needed to be on the Banjo stage which would have prevented crowds getting boxed in by the perimeter fencing at the smaller stage. I talked to a happy cop as we were exiting  the park, seriously -  he was thrilled that Sunday wasn’t the shit show of Saturday night. The cop said that as fences got pushed down at the Plant performance the cops could only stand back and hope for the best. seeing SWAT teams in the park was a first and unsettling. But I overcame the buzz kill by talking to them about a performance I heard about by a Chinese SWAT team where they did a full on choreographed dance routine in uniform - with weapons - to the Mission Impossible  soundtrack. Of course the Chinese have time to learn to dance since they rarely have the mass shootings that have become a common occurrence in NRA’s America. Anyway, my message was Dance more..

Robert Plant was unbelievable. I love when the Towers Stage is packed.

According to people who were squished by the fencing - which eventually toppled - it wasn’t a great situation, according to the nice cop who was there trying to help with a medical emergency at the crowded fence line, also not a good situation.

‘Don’t fence me in’

in the past, without a fenced in perimeter  - no problem, but since that’s happening now the organizers need to plan accordingly to avoid problems

I saw one person struggling with the fence being there.

It was still a killer show.

Just wanted to say I watched/listened to the streams all weekend and my favorite was Lester chambers singing time has come today with moonalice.

HOLY shit.

my daughter likes mandolin orange.

>Wondering why Emmylou did not allow her set to be streamed<

because she never has?

She also put on a sweet early morning show - 5 songs - basically extended the sound check for the adoring fans. One more reason it’s worth  arriving early..

Thanks to the musicians who allow streaming and archiving of their sets. Those that don't have their reasons I am sure. I have been enjoying going back through some of the weekend's sets, and sorry that some of my favorites are not archived. The Flatlanders and Judy Collins were both great and would be fun to revisit. It would also be great to hear Robert Plant's set since I could not get near the stage on account of that damned fence. It seemed literally thousands more people descended on that end of the festival for his set. Fencing in the stage in that circumstance, not a good idea. That was a logistical fuck up for a generally well run weekend, and overall not as crowded as some years. There were a lot of police around, but they were relaxed with the citizens and visitors out for the party.

Kronos Quartet's Music For Change: Pete Seeger @ 100. That was a highlight and is in the video archive. Both of my daughters are San Francisco Girls Chorus alumni, so I both smile and tear up listening to the Chorus girls singing "We Shall Overcome."
