It's A Bullshit Lie

"yeah, the rest of us are quitting"

i heard the rumor at the Mardi Gras shows in february.

my 'source' said wasserman was going to take Phil's place.

I liked Wasserman but I think that would have worked out about as well as Vince did.

wasserman was the mark karan of bass players

tough crowd

Hot show

we were there - very encouraging.

6/8/90 is a favorite of mine. Hot 90 show with a cool setlist and awesome playing. Wasn't there but wish I was. Must have been a fun day or night. Cal Expo started out as daytime shows but didn't they become night shows in the end? I only saw 84 which were 2 pm shows.

Went on my first water slide. I was afraid.

From the slide I could see that there was a pool backstage. Good times. Remember the lantern launch?

bullshit lie is the show where  i saw a bald man in underwear crawling around on all 4's in the dirt/mud during the other one....

Damn Turtle. That's a brutal vision.

One time I had to drive fast from Trinidad in Humboldt to Cal-Expo.

I was late, so by the time I cut over on HWY 20 to I-5, it was 100 degrees out and I had to go 100 MPH to get there on time.

I pulled into the Beverly Garland parking lot behind Expo and the car immediately overheated, dumping the remaining fluid on the lot.

Perfect timing.

I ran to the lot and instantly saw a stark naked Asian guy, clearly dosed out of his mind, running towards me. I only kept running because I saw

concerned people were going after him. Barely made it in on time.

What a day. Except for the heat, loved the venue.

good stories

local – Were you able to get the car out of the lot without much of a hassle

every Cal Expo show i saw was really good to great.

except '94.

the '94 run was not good.

Cal Expo was one of my favorite venues. Went to almost all of those... they were all in the daytime that I can recall...

... I had fun racing in w/ blankets to grab real estate for Seattle taper friends.

Local, Hwy 20 is a crusher when rushing to get somewhere fast, for sure.

Only went to Cal Expo in 84, but had a great time, band was fun, there was a windstorm going on the whole time, many stories

(got to sit in w/ a local band first night in Sac Town before the shows, played a little guitar, sang women are smarter, lol).

I heard the rumor about Phil leaving the band at Oakland Auditorium in August '79.

He was going to be replaced by John Kahn AND Jack Casady, and the music was just going to get better!

Cal Expo was one of my favorite venues. Went to almost all of those... they were all in the daytime that I can recall... <<<<

The show I posted above in 90 was at night.

Were you really ever there!?

^^^ I was, actually, even ran into Bobby on the treadmill in the Hilton workout room.

...in 1990 I was living overseas, so missed that nighttime show... that's why I said "almost". Thanks for calling that out!

Just for grins, not sure about '86, and '90 sounds like they were at night, but the rest were:

'91

7, 7, 6 pm

'92

6, 6, 6 pm

JGB----7 pm

'93

7, 7, 7 pm

'94

(only went to 6/9 and 6/10)

7, 7 pm

Matt, the car was fine the next day, just had to add water (Dodge Diplomat Police Special).

We must have been staying there but I can't remember that part....

LLO, yes, Hwy 20 is a great road but indeed a pain when you're late for a Dead show!

After researching a little 84 and 86 were 2 pm shows. The rest from 89 to 94 were night shows.

Only made it to the 86 shows - def. in the afternoon. Wife and I went to Sat. - the show we had tix in advance for, but picked up one in the lot for Sun.

On Sunday wife and friend went to Nevada City to visit folks in our car. I got their spare car to go to the show in. Never saw or drove it before - some sort of broken-down Chevy Vega, I believe. Drove 5 min. parked it, and went in to the show.

The folks sitting in front of me had some amazing paper. Great show too. As we streamed out I realized that in my altered state I had no idea where I parked or even what the car looked like. I remembered that the door didn't lock, so I couldn't even try a bunch of doors with the key.

After what seemed like forever the cars started to thin out and I began to recover a bit of my mind. I finally found a car that looked promising, all the while wondering if I was going to be busted for car theft and whatever else. The door was unlocked and unlockable, so I was encouraged. I hopped in and put in the key. It fit and it started!

Next problem - how to get back to their house, which we had never visited before. I knew it was only 5 min. away, so I began to drive in ever-widening circles around the venue. Finally got to a neighborhood that looked possibly familiar, and luckily I saw our host standing in his front yard watching for me.

Now all I had to do was switch cars to their good one and drive to Nevada City. No problem - just had to remember to drive right on through the ones in my mind.

Good times.

^haha damn. surf you funny. i like your style.

^ ha, (chuckling) yeah that sounds "typical." Glad you made it back safe and sound.

You could have just slept in it

^^^^flood of memories triggered by those 2 words

In the case of Calpo, you really had to leverage creative license in order to consider it an amphitheater. Fairgrounds is really what it was.

Funny story surf.

Went to Cal Expo only one time and it was one of only a small handful of shows I got shut out of despite the fact that I had tickets.

Was hanging out in the lot before the show when a friend of mine showed up with some magic bud.  Seriously, it was like glowing green.  We got super baked, like really high, high and the next thing I know the cops and yellow shirts came sweeping down the row just hassling people and causing trouble.  I got up and moved away, but then remembered I had left my backpack (which had my tickets in it) where we had been sitting.   Searched high and low for it, but it was gone, and couldn't find an extra.

Off topic, but I am watching a TV show about searching for a WWi U-boat that supposedly was sunk by a sea monster smiley  near Ireland. The name of the dive boat is...

...Dark Star.
