Let’s Do The Shutdown Again

Forums:

New restrictions go into effect tonight at midnight in the state of Washington for the next four weeks.   No indoor dining or bars, movie theaters, bowling alleys, gathering with people outside your family who haven't quarantined for 14 days.  Churches limited to 200 people or 25%  capacity (whatever's less), and no congregational singing allowed.  25% capacity for retail, including barber's and hair salons.  Construction and Manufacturing continue at 100%.

Restaurants and bars are fucked.

Many restaurants have just invested in outdoor heating and other infrastructure to allow them to continue outdoor table service into the winter.   Sucks for them.

We will see if people abide by the new restrictions.   We aren't hosting or going anywhere for Thanksgiving this year, but the newly elected county chairperson for Clackamas County (SE burbs of Portland) says she is going to defy the Governor's order and throw the biggest Thanksgiving dinner ever:

https://katu.com/news/local/clackamas-county-official-plans-to-hold-larg...

Let's not.

Our restrictions went into effect this past weekend. Restaurants can be open until 10 pm, but only 4 to a table and they have to be housemates. Bars are closed. I'm not sure how it works for the restaurant/bars, which most places around here are.

The real head-scratcher for me is the regulation that you're not supposed to meet with anyone outside your house, even when outdoors, in a mask, and socially distanced. Yet, you can go to stores, the gym, etc.

Whatever. It's less restrictive than in the Spring, and if it flattens the curve, so be it.

You haven't been able to eat inside since March in California. Bars without food also have been closed, you know because food cures covid.

Restaurants were open for indoor dining in Sacramento with limited capacity I went to pick up some sushi a for take out a couple of weeks ago and the place seemed full to me. They just closed them again for indoor.

I just don't understand people who can't go a year with out eating in a restaurant.

proud of my great govenor, Jay Inslee for taking these steps.  don't blame him; blame the idiots throughout our state who continue to flout the covid severity.

I agree with JR (what?). Kate Brown, Oregon governor, has ordered a shutdown beginning Wednesday that includes wearing masks inside and out. Why wait? Our COVID numbers are spiking, the hospitals are filling, the stress on health care workers to help is enormous, and why? Because people continue to gather, hang out in bars, etc., without wearing masks or practicing good hygiene and distancing. The surge right now has been traced to Halloween gatherings.

I don't get it. Why not wear masks, physically distance, reduce even masked exposure to under 15 minutes, wash hands... what's so fucking hard to do about that for a few weeks to get it under control, flatten the curve, and be able to open up in safer circumstances. Save your neighbors, your family, your hospital workers, your grocery, etc. workers so we can lose fewer people to illness and death and get the economy back on track. We are just beginning to find out about the long-lasting effects of COVID-19; we don't know how terribly serious it will be for people who aren't even getting very sick with it.

So important to corral it now.

<<Why not wear masks

no libtard is going to tell me what to do; they want to take my freedom away. dr. fauci is in it for the money along with bill gates.

It's just a jump to the left
and then a step to the right

good moves for the westies

"....since March in California"

Wrong. Marin opened in late September for 50% indoor dining.

Now, smartly, shutting it down due to this surge.

Good call.

Even with a vaccine on the horizon we will all need to wear masks, socially distance and expect rolling shut downs well into next year  if we're to defeat COVID and return to 'normal'

And YAY for the stock market soaring based  a press release from trusted pharmaceutical reps who claim to have delivered  the  most effective vaccine ever,  in record time. And perfectly safe.

  *sarcasm*

https://www.kqed.org/science/1971077/what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-about...

I stand corrected.  Los Angeles county hasn't fully opened since March.

howd the lockdown work out last time?  Hahaha,

the lockdowns were and will again  be necessary to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed. That's funny?

if everyone wore a mask and practiced social distancing, the lockdowns wouldn't be necessary.

indoor restaurants and venues where the science has shown easy  Covid spread are the first to get shut down.

Take a step back

and

another step back...

^^^howd the lockdown work out last time?  Hahaha,

For anyone who was paying attention, they worked fantastically.

It seems that the only country that had bad numbers to start with that isn't ramping back up is Australia. There lockdown was pretty severe and the didn't reopen most stuff until there rate was almost zero. If that is the answer, let's do it now. Things like you can't leave your home unless it is to get essential services or you are an essential worker. You could go outside your on your property for a max of 1 hour a day and you had to be masked the whole time. Tough times take tough measures. Sure, people complained but it worked and now that they are back to less restrictions they are not ramping up. It worked.

The first outdoor event I attended back in mid-July had people following the rules. Each event that I have attended since, all outside, have had less and less people doing what needs to be done. It sucked seeing friends staying 6 ft away for me without our usual interactions but I realize that we ALL need to do everything, not pick and choose what we want to do, in order for this to work out. One thing that was thought to help has proven to be a no starter: contact tracing. Most people are not forthcoming with who they've interacted with for some reason. Only if everyone gets with the program, vaccine or not, we will be in the same position we are now this time next year. And the year after that...

Lock up the poorest people first.

>>> Only if everyone gets with the program, vaccine or not, we will be in the same position we are now this time next year. And the year after that... <<<

if you can't get past your selfish shit

you're no better than trump

we're better than that

<<>>>If that is the answer, let's do it now.

would need a massive stimulus package that american politicians will never pass.

^^^^ thanks tony

Philly just shut down again. No visiting of any kind in any household. Good luck trying to enforce that. A lot more businesses doing down this time.

thanks man

philly stay safe!

Philly, stay safe while you loose everything you've worked hard for in life! Love ya

*smooch smooch*

howd the lockdown work out last time?  Hahaha,

I can't speak for L.A., but Sonoma county had 4 total covid related deaths during the SIP shutdown in March to the county re-opening in mid-June. Since the re-opening in mid-June, there have been 145 covid related deaths in Sonoma county.  I ain't no mathermitishun but...

pan·dem·ic

/panˈdemik/

adjective: pandemic

(of a disease) prevalent over a whole country or the world.

The situation we're in is beyond Philly, or New Jersey, or the East or the West, it is prevalent over the whole country, and the world. The economic fallout is beyond my imaging. We have to shut down now to prevent more long-term illness and deaths. Of course, I guess you could say that if there are fewer people alive there will be fewer affected by the economic devastation, but that's really sad. We're all in it.

Mr_timpane, serious question: "if you ran the world" how would you proceed? In Philly or anywhere. It sounds like you wouldn't close things down.

Judit, I would never run this country or any country. When I get out into position of leadership my ego gets in the way. I'm better as a trusted servant who does not govern.

My opinion on this matter is without some kind of immediate or close to immediate action for financial stability for those who will be affected by these shut downs who are currently employed and living pay check to check then these shut downs will fail and cause huge fall outs in the lower class and working class.

I have no solution for you, Judit. In the USA and Great Britain there are millions on millions of pharmaceuticals leaving many people susceptible to lowered immunity and disease. Covid Satan has found its home in these two regions and it may get worse than we thought.

^ still a condescending fuck

wow

More a cop out than condescension. For all that effort pointing out what's wrong, you may as well have some sort of solution.

What Willows fails to point out is that almost everyone of these deaths, sad as each one is, where from senior care facilities... which Gov. NewSLUM had COVID confirmed cases sent into care facilities.

My Uncle had COVID confirmed tests, twice.  He was sick, recovered, here in Santa Rosa. Mild cold, no side effect at this point... they say it's different for everybody.

Type O's like me are the least likely to get it.... per multiply studies

Protect the most venerable

The rest of us do our part and just play if super safe with masks and physical distancing being clean and staying home if not feeling well

My blood type is O +

unfortunately there is no scientific evidence that O+ type have  less severe symptoms

https://hms.harvard.edu/news/covid-19-blood-tye

>Blood type is not associated with a severe worsening of symptoms in people who have tested positive for COVID-19, report Harvard Medical School researchers based at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Their findings, published in the Annals of Hematology, dispel previous reports that suggested a correlation between certain blood types and COVID-19.

Get more HMS news here

The study did find, however, that symptomatic individuals with blood types B and AB who were Rh positive were more likely to test positive for COVID-19, while those with blood type O were less likely to test positive.

“We showed through a multi-institutional study that there is no reason to believe being a certain ABO blood type will lead to increased disease severity, which we defined as requiring intubation or leading to death,” said senior study author Anahita Dua, HMS assistant professor of surgery at Mass General.

“This evidence should help put to rest previous reports of a possible association between blood type A and a higher risk for COVID-19 infection and mortality,” Dua said.

One of the first Sonoma county deaths was a cop in her 40's

Age groups that tested positive were kind of surprising to me, I assumed it was mainly old folks but it's mainly people from 18-55 testing positive. That said seniors were advised to Shelter In Place from the get go.

All the county stats I mentioned are here if you want to look the info up.

https://socoemergency.org/emergency/novel-coronavirus/coronavirus-cases/

I have been reading that people with O+ type blood are less susceptible to getting Covid-19, not that their symptoms are less virulent. I'm O+ and am hoping for a little edge...

>>> ... and it may get worse than we thought. <<<

I fear that every aspect of it will get worse than I thought it would, or even thought possible. It's almost unbelievable to me that people, in authority and not, don't see that we have to help support people who are no longer being paid because their workplaces have been shut down. We need to take care of people so they will take care of others; wear masks, stay home, distance, etc. Reduce the military budget for a short time or ? I may sound like a simpleton, but how can we leave people in the cold while asking them to help preserve the health of their neighbors?

Don't make me laugh, BK. As I've already told you guys Covid Satan is probably coming for you. It is a result of your own ways. Through your inability to except life and the world around you, you have created your own problem. You need a solution but maybe the solution is you and Thod are going down. Ever think of that? Two older decrepit males past their prime who are at high risk. Sad but true. Stay away, guys That's my solution for you.

That and Bk switch your deodorant every now and then.

Going to be a long winter.  We're back on lockdown now in Illinois.  I figured this would probably be the case but it stinks.  Our numbers are worse than ever.

And the idiots in Wisconsin are fighting over whether or not they need to mask up.  Cases are raging there too.

Southeast PA: Philly locking down without the surrounding counties doing the same is folderol.

We've visited our kids this fall...No Thanksgiving gathering and the better half has just come around to the fact that Xmas should be off the table as well.

She works in a rehab hospital (brain trauma unit), in the spring/summer part of the hospital was converted for COVID-19 care. Just recently that's ramped back up. Also, this time around staff are testing positive, contracting at home from their spouse.

I have not been around here for a while, but it seems Mr_timpane has become one of the "angry old men". cheeky

Hey Timpy,

I remember you mentioning at the beginning of covid,

that Your Wife had respiratory issues, and was at risk...

How is She holding up through all of this?!

Don't worry, the government will save us.

>>>>No visiting of any kind in any household.

What about schwag?

Does racket have Pseudobulbar Affect?

It doesn't seem that complicated. You wear a mask, wash your hands, and suck it up for a while and not go to crowded areas. Thanksgiving and Christmas are just days. Nobody needs to gather with 20 family members from all over. That's why God invented Zoom.

<<<>>>The first outdoor event I attended back in mid-July had people following the rules. Each event that I have attended since, all outside, have had less and less people doing what needs to be done.

sounds insane. why even do any events? seems reckless.

it's not complicated, BK. But members of a cult to will not be convinced to defy their leader

Yes, pyramid, I agree, very reckless. Although I am a huge Jorma fan,  and love his acoustic work,, I passed on the  Monmouth racetrack show. I couldn't justify the risk.

^right? also extremely selfish. and now we're back to lockdowns w/o stimulus.

fuck people who can't do this proper.

sounds insane. why even do any events? seems reckless.

These were all outdoor concerts with distancing protocols in place that were workable. What is becoming evident is that people, not the event set up itself, are the problem. Whether this is a case of covid fatigue setting in or a general case of people just won't follow the rules or a combination of both as time goes on it has become less effective in stopping the spread. of covid-19. It a shame since things went well in the early days. As for me attending, it's my job to photograph events. I didn't qualify for any stimulus payments so I work when I can and am fastidious in following protocols. Plentyh of rumblings in my industry that live performances might not return to the days of old until late 2022 now.

^i hear you man.

Everyone just needs to suck it up.we Americans(and others) just can't be inconvenienced

We don't even like waiting at stop lights. Our depression era ancestors would be mortified to see us

The shutdowns only provide a temporary curve as this virus is not going to evaporate into thin air. If we were to have a 100% effective vaccine then that should be a "cure" but right now it looks as if we are still quite far from any kind of approved vaccine. Even if one is approved we are talking about a rushed vaccine that may not be effective if the virus mutates. So what is there left to do? We can either go on to the bitter ends or find a new way to do this whole world thing. Do we all shelter in place for the next year? If so what kind of world will be in after that? We are giving our states and governments more control than they've ever have had and that could prove to be dangerous as our government has proved incompetence from all angles and has not shown they truly want people to get out of this economic crisis. Our outbreak was much worse than other countries. It will not just go away. The country would be decimated without a real stimulus to provide people with means to pay the banks who will not cease their bills. Why are the banks suffocating people?

RRg, yes my wife is still at risk just like all of you folks over 55. I have to come to grips with it. I try to go on will life in enjoyment in faith instead of living in fear of it.

love when all the crybabies lose their shit over gavin newscum...

Been going through Physical Therapy during the entire run of Covid,  everyone masks up and they limit the number of people in the waiting room.  Latest iteration has been Aquatherapy -- basically a giant hot tub with a treadmill.

It's full of Bromine,  but I don't drink the water.

They clean the pool quite often.  For quite a while,  all pools were shut down.

The vast majority of people hanging around these types of offices also got in a wreck or got hurt on the job,  but I wouldn't want to be visiting Otolaryngologists (sp. ?) or Pneumonia doctors.

Seems that would increase the odds of contagious people.

> Our depression era ancestors would be mortified to see us

People have forgotten, or perhaps never understood, that heroism is all about sacrifice.

100% agree

There is no such thing as 100% effective vaccine

We have two in trials right now which means that about 30,000 people have been vaccinated in each trial and one is 95% effective and the other is 90% effective. That is off the charts good and would effectively wipe out Covid.

Nothing has been rushed with any of the vaccines. Trump is so pissed about that he is threatening to impose price controls on the pharmaceuticals industry for all their drugs as punishment for them not rushing.

We could start seeing front line workers getting vaccines as early as January. Everything points to wide spread distribution by Spring. It is not forever.

Our country is not the worst although very close to the worst. Belgium is the worst and Peru, Spain, Italy, UK, Chile and Brazil all have more deaths than us.

There are also really good therapeutics now we just don't have enough of them.

Yes we need a giant stimulus to get us through but the Republicans will do everything possible to stop that just like 2008.

>>>>No visiting of any kind in any household.

What about schwag?<<

Nice!

No schwag, Zang.

For crying out loud, it's the holidays!
