Luv me a first set mid set China/Rider from the 80's

Forums:

They must have been jazzed up to play it in that slot.

Yes very rare- mostly in the first set closer or second set opener slot.

IMO a few of the best were show openers. You knew Garcia was pumped when he opened with it. I think there was good one at San Diego Sports Arena once.

Probably the last show opener?  2/11/86     You knew Garcia was pumped...Birdsong>Music>MA Well is one heckuva set closer

I was at that Kaiser show.  Jerry was dancing during the China Rider.  Best first set that year.  They screwed the pooch in the second set though.

China/Rider is one of those I am ALWAYS happy to hear. From 1978 - current, the opening notes of China Cat from any band I'm listening to always makes me happy. I would be OK hearing it two or three nights in a row.

My favorite personal version is the 1st set closer from 9/12/81. One of the coolest & most surprising versions I ever heard was a China/Rider encore at the Frost. It threw me so much it took me a few moments to recognize what they were playing.

Check out the one from Indianapolis 2/3/79.   I think it may have been the 1st one since 12/29/77.

China/Rider encore sounds epic. Dark Star encore though is the Schnizzle!

I was at that Ventura show I flew out on Capital Airlines on the red eye after seeing Roger Waters: The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking . Really good set of shows w Bobby breaking out Midnight Hour (not including The Etta James version) the following night.

My 5th show 10/31/79 at Nassau they opened w China Rider and the place went berserk. https://archive.org/details/gd79-10-31.sbd.miller.29410.sbeok.flacf

Probably my favorite China/Rider is 3/9/81 MSG. Wasn't there but was at the U of MD Cole Field House the show before.

And don't forget that epic I just wanna make love to you. Brent was on fire.

84 was definitely the best Ventura shows IMO.

doc I was at that Cole Field House and 3/9 show. The Aiko to open the second set of Cole Field House was epic as was seeing Birdsong and other songs that I heard acoustic at Radio City electric at the home of The Terrapins.

I had backstage passes to 3/9 & 10 as The Sushi restaurant I worked for was hired to cater the show but the Garden banned us from bringing in outside food for the band so we got handed passes and were told to enjoy the show.

I do remember the Just Want To Make Love To You Brent was fierce! I thought Ventura 82 was pretty awesome but 84 was better 82 was the return of Crazy Fingers though. Summer 82 was a great tour!

^ Can't believe they didn't play Terrapin Station at U of Md. I bet they planned to but Jerry wasn't feeling it is my guess. They did that long jam before drums instead. I think that show is overrated. Some sloppy playing. And they played Birdsong again at the next show at MSG which was unusual.

And Ventura 82 were my first Cali shows. Don't remember a thing but saw all Ventura shows. My favorite place I ever saw them. 2nd Cali show the US fest. 3rd Frost 82  Not a bad summer.

>>>Probably my favorite China/Rider is 3/9/81

Thanks for the heads up.  Gave it a spin this morning.  Very enjoyable.

Outstanding.   Always like to be pointed to some good gems.   Thank you.

Man I love that cole field house show. All of March 81 actually.

I loved being there at Cole. Wasn't there a dancing train of people going around? Was an energetic audience from my memory and listening to tapes. I personally think the band was not running on all gears. I hear it in the tapes.

I think I saw one first set China Rider '78-'95, and it closed the set.  The usual qualifiers applysmiley

I'm relistening to Cole and I have a new found love for it. Maybe it's because I'm stoned? .wink

Jerry is definitely raw in his playing which I love. And Weir is in top form.

Remember a photo of Cole being in the 1982 GD calender.

And to Zang this post-coma Jerry Easter show is epic and has a great China/Rider

^ And that show above has the first Morning Dew in 1 and a half years. And only one of 1979. And first Brent Morning Dew!

Grate show

Should definitely be a release!

Thanks for all of these great shows that I have been adding to my queue!

Yes that Dew is ripping. Doolittle I think that was officially released.

^That photo is from Cole Field House U of Md. 1981. It was in the 1982 GD calender.

Since we're still focusing on China/Riders, here's one of my favorites.

The first post-hiatus C/R, after a three-year break from the band playing the songs, and IMO brilliant renditions of both, emerging so gently, almost silently out of the dark weird muck of a long, strange Playin' jam.

The band playing in my personal favorite style of drippy, trippy, dynamic, super quiet then raging Grateful Dead.

Jerry whispering the lyrics at one point, screaming them at another, and the gentle interplay between all the members is so great, especially in the jam between the two songs.

Ah, '77...

9/6/80.

First Morning Dew in 1 and a half years. And only one of 1979.>>>

June '77 to May '80, played only twice.  4/15/78 Williamsburg & 11/8/79 Landover.  Less than 3 hour drive between the two.  Something in the water, maybe??
