No matter how you feel about all the exorbitant costs, flying a chopper on a distant planet is a pretty amazing achievement. https://twitter.com/NASAJPL
Well Jill, if you're gonna go THAT far and spend that much, it might be nice to have a way to explore a lot more of the planet while you're there than with a rover limited by the topography.
I'm not a giant fan of this Mars stuff with all the needs we have here. Who the hell wants to go there? Such an inhospitable place. But there will be spin off discoveries due to the research.
It is an achievement to adapt to the atmosphere and fly. First aircraft to fly on a planet beyond Earth. And it is a little ways away, so there's that. Nice to have a US achievement to be proud of. IMNSHO.
Slick, I hear you about the terrestrial problems we have, but I also think it's important for us to do big stuff, and the space program is one of the last few real boundary-pushing endeavors that we're involved in anymore. Doing big stuff was what made the US great, but we don't do much of it anymore. We used to build things, and now we mostly just buy and sell things.
We sure don't, Slacker, and the thing is, we have more than enough resources to build affordable housing and go to Mars, but much of our wealth is held by very few hands.

Technology developed by NASA has been used to develop many products we use on earth, the pacemaker is one example.
