Oh shit, they just found out pot...uh..um...

This article is for the 12 % ers:

"When researchers looked at the marijuana habits of a group of people ages 18 to 30, and then again 25 years later, one finding rose above the fog: For every five years of lighting up, your ability to recall common words slides.

At the beginning of the study, which was published in JAMA Internal Medicine, 84 percent of the group reported using marijuana, while less than 12 percent reported still smoking it 25 years later.

During the follow-up, participants were given standard cognitive tests that measured three things: processing speed (for example, solving simple math problems), verbal memory (word recall), and higher-level skills that show how well different parts of the brain are working together.

The longer people used marijuana, the worse they did on all three fronts. However, after accounting for other factors that could affect brain performance, such as education level, only the association between long-term marijuana use and verbal memory persisted.

Specifically, for every five years that someone uses marijuana, they recall one less word from a list of 15.

The study authors admit they were a bit surprised to find such a consistent association, and say they plan to invite participants back for a 30-year visit, at which time they’ll undergo cognitive testing."

Fortunately, I gave up on nouns a long time ago.....

Did the study release info about the volume / rate per day and per person?

^ Sorry, I was too stoned lazy to look up the original published..... whatyacallit?.... article. This is just a news blurb on my email thingamajiggy.

CRS - been that way for years, you learn to roll with it, no big whoop

My memory is fine, until I walk into another room.

But...we're they happier?

If words go missing, they probably weren't needed anyhow.

^Why? Because when I'm talking you already know what I'm going to      ?

^ whoa...spooky

how'd you do that?

1 + 2 = Pie

Yum!

Ned if you're hungry there is a good bacon thread next one down with smokin hot pics.

Does not compute

*toke*

Thinking like a wannabe oligarch, I'm thinking there is a marketing opportunity related to commercializing the 12% er angle from that research journal article -- stoners that have been smoking weed for 25 or more years.  Like 420 has been commercialized. 12% er patches, stickers, smoking accessories, eyeglasses, canes, oxygen tanks...

Perhaps if Mike made some pins and someone would ask him what's that mean? and he's tell them and they'd either buy one for themselves or buy one for some old stoner they know and whammo, once some AARP influencer-model wears one  -- the 12% logo will be on sneakers before ya know it.

just another million dollar idea....what were we talking about? does anyone smell bacon?

Me not stay stoned?

Listen, I reread that article and I calculate that if there are 15 zoners in a room, I'm going to forget 9 of their names.

Probably in less than two seconds. I apologize in advance. Blame science.

Haha, Bryen your are one persistent cat.

Never mind.

speaking of loosing ones marbles, er, golf balls...

I cannot think of the word I want to say about this topic

Hi Jill!!

OK. So I have been smoking pot for 54 yrs minus a yr once and 90 days another time.  Soon I will remember only 4 words out of 15. Sounds about right.

> I was too stoned lazy to look up the original published

I finally had some time to track down the study. Their conclusion? "Past exposure to marijuana is associated with worse verbal memory but does not appear to affect other domains of cognitive function."

Also of note: "The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) mainly assesses verbal memory through the ability to memorize and retrieve lists of 15 words."

To me, that sounds like a test of short-term memory, not long-term.
