Pacific Northwest 73/74 box set

Forums:

Have not bought a box set yet, but this came out while I was in Portland this summer.  That got me thinking about it.

There is a cable car aerial tram thing that runs up to a big medical center in Portland and when we walked to the outside patio at the top, there was an art exhibit including work by the Native American artist  whose work adorns the box set (I'll know his name when my box arrives tomorrow) . That was enough of a 'cosmic burp' that I bought a copy

My son received his surprise box in Portland today. This eastie has to wait til tomorrrow.

Got mine yesterday.  Very nicely done and the discs sound fantastic.

Latvala was right; 1973 is the best year.

Latvala WAS right IMHO.  Members of the band were quoted as saying that the one drummer format allowed them to swing like a jazz band

Ordered one after listening through it all.

Who wants to go in on a set of 24/192 FLACS ??

Mine just arrived this afternoon.

I'm going one disc a day for the next 19 days.

The packaging is beautiful.  They could get a Grammy nomination for that alone.

I saw a photo of the complete package - it was incredibly beautiful, but I can't find where I saw it. Probably on Facebook, but I can't remember who posted it. I'd love to see it again.

Gorgeous.

Mine arrived yesterday - love the package design and the music sounds spectacular.  Of course, true to Rhino shoddiness, I already have one disc (6/22/73 - disc #2) that needs to be sent back due to digital skipping.

Good Morning Judit - This is the one that arrived at my doorstep yesterday.

Thank you, Rob, it was your picture that I saw yesterday. I love it.

Hey Rob, it looks like you have some sort of slip with the number of your set.  Was that in the stash box?  Mine didn't arrive with one.  I wonder if I contact GDM if they can send me mine?

yes, the slip has the number and is in the wood box. mine is 14928, ordered within minutes of the on-sale announcement.

Dr rhino is VERY good about replacing damaged/missing items

Thanks for the feedback, Fishcane, I will be in touch with Rhino.

^^^Mine was #02534 and I don't recall ordering on the day of sale.  Thanks also, Fishcane in reminding me that Rhino is indeed very good about replacing items.  I have had this experience with them and GD Box Set stuff before and it's just freaking annoying to have to send something back when you have really been looking forward to it arriving.

Some interesting commentary for each show by Dave Lemieux on Dead.net (scroll down):

that WRS from 5/19 sounds awesome

Just opened mine ... damn if the packaging isn't a work of art in itself.

Thanks Hillman .... only had an hour. Started with the WRS from 5/19.

73 with one drummer, fresh songs and strong playing  (JG flying in rare pre-junkie chops & awareness....) just makes me smile

Gonna be a good month of music

Heard some of it today - sounds real good!

Ordered it just now - surprised it was still available.

There is a 3 CD version of this which is supposed to be highlights of the full package.  Can any of you who have heard the 19 disks comment on that, are the 3 CDs representative of the “best of” the 19?

The 3 CDs are...

Disc One

“China Cat Sunflower” (5/19/74)

“I Know You Rider” (5/19/74)

“Bird Song” (6/22/73)

“Box Of Rain” (6/24/73)

“Brown-Eyed Women” (5/21/74)

“Truckin’” (5/19/74)

Jam (5/19/74)

“Not Fade Away” (5/19/74)

“Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad” (5/19/74)

“One More Saturday Night” (5/19/74)

--

Disc Two

“Here Comes Sunshine” (6/22/73)

“Eyes Of The World” (5/17/74)

“China Doll” (5/21/74)

“Playing In The Band” (5/21/74)

--

Disc Three

“Sugaree” (5/17/74)

“He’s Gone” (6/22/73)

“Truckin’” (6/22/73)

“The Other One” (6/22/73)

“Wharf Rat” (6/22/73)

“Sugar Magnolia” (6/22/73)

It just showed up on Tuesday, so I seriously doubt that anyone has listened to all 19 discs yet.  I'm going one a day in order.  Disc 3 of Vancouver '73 is in today's queue.

^^Thanks for the heads up!

3 CD's for $18 bucks is alright with me.

This is the 3 CD package on the bands official You Tube site for free, Boys are kicking it, up to Eyes so far...

Does the box also come with digi download. Seems awesome but $200 for 6 shows makes it sound not so awesome. Pretty though.

Is that playin really the longest song the Grateful Dead ever played? 46 minutes

Alias, the box comes with a free couple things:

"...Dead.Net Computer Screen Graphic
Dead Computer Screen Graphic  (download)

Eyes Of The World Digital Single (Live at P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. 5/17/74)
Eyes Of The World Digital Single (Live at P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. 5/17/74)  (download)..."

But they sell the digi files separately.  Appple lossless or FLAC 24/192.

Yes, China....   longest single GD song live without a jam into another tune....

This looks great. Can't wait to hear it.

Phil is really strong in these recordings, I got the three disk set.  Good stuff for sure.

Mine is supposed to arrive tomorrow!

Cool NW art!

Mine is supposed to arrive tomorrow! <<<

Cheers Surfdead ! yes

The sound on these discs is phenomenal.  The Wall Of Sound picks up every nuance of their playing.  I'm up to the Seattle '73 show at my one disc a day regimen.  I've had several non-Deadhead friends, employees and customers comment on how exceptional the sound is.  One compared it to like you were in a mobile recording unit while it was happening live.

The Phil solo in Eyes is sweet.  Crank it up!  :-)

Who's got my Suncloud link?

Keith's Fender Rhodes playing is also superb, he really should have kept that in his arsenal.

^^ oops I meant Truckin (6/22/73), not Eyes.  I must have I must have been in a daydream when I typed that.

Song 1 , disc one was JUST like being at a GD show. They started with Bertha and you can't hear the vocals until the 2nd verse. Sound was top notch by song two.

This is why I love us...enjoying and sharing some good ol’ Grateful Dead and shit.

>The Wall Of Sound picks up every nuance of their playing

I think you would have to listen to an audience recording to actually hear the Wall Of Sound.

Stage mics >> soundboard>> PA System for the WoS

Stage mics>>soundboard>> two track reel to reel recording for the CDs

You can hear Phil's 4 string separation to varying degrees on 1973/74 SBD recordings

When you hear Donna scream on a 1973 soundboard, it's not the Wall Of Sound, it's her signal from the soundboard hitting the tape really hard. well, it is the Wall Of Sound because she has no monitors and is having to scream-sing just to hear what she's doing. That's why she sounds bad on soundboard recordings but not that bad on an audience recording. You are hearing two different things. She is mixed properly coming through the Wall of Sound but not on the 2 track board recordings.

>>>>   Song 1 , disc one was JUST like being at a GD show. They started with Bertha and you can't hear the vocals until the 2nd verse. Sound was top notch by song two.

yep, almost seems like the dial in was last 15 seconds of bertha.

Sound guys had to powder their noses.

sound is sooooo good I like GSET again, especially after turning it up a LOT.

(Vancouver 73..disk 3 of my listening pleasure).

Probably more like they didn't do a proper soundcheck with the band before the show and the sound guys just kinda made sure everything was working and not broken

Just got around to disc 14 (PDX 74 Set I). Is it just my copy - I doubt it - or is anyone else's missing vocals for a bunch of songs? Sounds like it is on the master - was that the case at the show FOH as well?

Hi Surf, which tunes on disc 14 are missing vocals?  I haven't got to that disc yet but I'll check.

There are issues with some metadata on some tracks but only a geek would notice, and I can fix it :-)

Now I can't remember - have to re-listen and report back.

Disc 14, track 5....why Donna why?
