Pedal steel players

Forums:

Just had the opportunity to play with a pedal steel player. What a game changer. I loved having that in the mix. Any zoner psg players or recommendations?

Greg Listz played with many, one of my favs he is on is Bill Frisell  "Good Dog ,Happy Man"

Lord Henry and Frank Sinatra were the zoner pedal steel guys.  I don’t think either of them Vivas though.

Cool recs. Preciate it.

The Ralph Mooney selections come from the "featured music" on this episode of the excellent podcast Cocaine & Rhinestones.

Pedal steel is my favorite sounding electric instrument.

i might even break down and buy one some day but they sure do appear intimidating.

It was exciting to see the progress sinatra and lh were both Making, not sure how much either is playing the instrument these days.

hands down the most beautiful instrument ever developed by man.

gdad just into'd be to Rand Anderson who plays with Tom Curren's band (80's iconic pro surfer)

he also just started to jam with my SC buddies and got to check him, pretty good.

Larry Campbell is a very talented pedal steel guitarist. As is Lebo.

Jerry wasn’t bad either.

Another one I really dig is Steve Kimock.

This one is gorgeous.

>> Steve Kimock

That's a lap steel guitar, not a pedal steel.

Pretty sure Kimock's never even publicly played a pedal steel.

I was just reading the history of the pedal steel. Began in Hawaii as a lap slide in the late 1800's. Weissenborn built a dedicated lap slide in the 1920s, Rickenbacker made it electric in the 30s. Leo Fender improved it in the 50s.

Guys put legs on it so they could stand and then pedals were added. Refinements continue to this day.

You're always right Ateix...

A master of improvisation for nearly four decades, Steve Kimock has been inspiring music fans with his transcendent guitar speak, voiced through electric, acoustic, lap and pedal steel guitars. While one can say that his genre is rock, no one niche has ever confined him. Instead, through the years, he’s explored various sounds and styles based on what’s moved him at the time, whether it’s blues or jazz; funk or folk; psychedelic or boogie; gypsy or prog-rock; traditional American or world fusion.

Psst. try google. (Winky face)

Mike Auldridge (RIP) of The Seldom Scene was accomplished on both the dobro and pedal steel guitar.

Ronnie Wood has made some nice recordings on pedal steel, and still plays it at Rolling Stones shows.

Cindy Cashdollar refers to herself as a non-pedal steel player, as she now focuses on lap steel, but she is also really good on pedal-steel.

Buddy Emmons and Jerry Byrd are two more pioneers of pedal-steel.

Mr Jerry Garcia

Dire wolf, teach your children with csny, box of rain, and pride of Cucamonga

Jerry mastered the instrument in its application in the context of hit song

Jerry was very clever at coming up with a great riff and concluding the musical statement

That was John McFee on Pride of Cucamonga on Mars Hotel, not Jerry.

I've always loved Paul Niehaus, who played with Lambchop, Calexico, Justin Townes Earle and others. His style is more atmospheric flowing than classic country, but he can get a great sound out of that great instrument...

how does robert randolph turn this beautiful instrument into trash?

^ so true

I break it down to which side of the Mississippi River. On the Eastern side I have two favorites of all time. Buddy Emmons and Lloyd Green. West of the Mississippi I give that top spot to Bobby Black. Herby Wallace out of Saint Louis is in the pedal steel hall of fame and rightfully so! The man owned that  complicated instrument.

Herb Remington from Bob Wills' Texas Playboys is another renowned pedal steel player.

Just imagine if Jimi Hendrix had mated w/ Dolly Parton and trained their offspring to play Pedal Steel from an early age.

those kids would be about the best Psychedelic Country Musicians in the World.

jimi and nina simone offspring would be way cool on pedal steel

Just found this yesterday

Checked out on YouTube - very cool and non traditional.

Yes Herb Remington and also Herbie Wallace were Giants of the pedal steel. That ZB Custom Jerry is playing here was bought at Scotty's Music in Saint Louis. "The steel guitar Capitol of the world." He would hit that store every time the Dead passed through and I believe he had recently just bought this one. Steve Parish hang time stories for me!

Can someone remind me what show this was when this pic was taken?

for something a bit more non-traditional, which is uncommon with pedal steel -

Daniel Lanois

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7OoV96Ih3k

heres a great track - venetian snares x daniel lanois - Night GHP133

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGgthQE8PkA

True. Lanois' album Flesh and Machine is in that same vein.

Brian Eno's album Apollo has some more of Lanois' ethereal pedal steel work. It actually might be my favorite album of Eno's, really subtle and sublime. For anyone who's into that, I would recommend the album Balsams by Chuck Johnson, referenced in the link above:

That album Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois is fucked. Really hardcore shit.

>>how does robert randolph turn this beautiful instrument into trash?

lol, sad but true.

I have always thought the more simple and less going on with the pedal steel the better. Best at that imo was Ben Keith on many Neil Young songs.  If I had to pick one song with that in mind for any pedal steel player that actually managed to crack through with a famous song on steel it would have to be B.J. Cole on Elton John's Tiny Dancer with Jerry second on Teach Your Children.

The pedal steel Jerry used at all of the 87 Dylan shows was an MCI. He also had an old Emmons that he used back in the late 60's early 70's. He also owned a Sho Bud. All bought at Scotty's. He later put the Emmons on sale used at Scotty's! Somebody scored big. It took a while to sell. That's likely about 1972.

Here's some fucking deep listening for all of you ambient steel fans that like Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois and mushrooms and just gettin fuuuuucked:

Lebo  ~ Capital Theater 12/14/18

Thanks for the Saariselka. Very cool.

Lebo is playing a lap steel. No pedals.

The Pedal steel is a fairly large instrument that sits on legs. It has levers and pedals to change the tuning of various strings as the instrument is being played. The number of pedals and levers varies from instrument to instrument....anything from 3 to ...well.. lots..  You can play lap steel (formerly known as Hawaiian steel, C6 is the most common Hawaiian tuning, but there are many) seated or standing, with or without a volume pedal, though the volume pedal is more common to pedal steel.  In PedalSteel guitars the most well known brands are probably Sho-Bud and Emmons. Emmons are really nice. Zane Beck Custom PedalSteyou.  As far as actual tone though....they're all probably going to sound similar.

Pedal steels are by definition different. Sure, they're both played in a similar manner, but pedal steels have the various pedals and levers that change the pitch of the notes. On a lap, you've got to use the bar to do that. You can sort of fake a few things, but the more If you want to see some really smokin' pedal work, check out Robert Randolph who comes from the "Sacred Steel" black gospel pedal steel tradition but also plays some quite rockin' secular music.

>>>>If you want to see some really smokin' pedal work, check out Robert Randolph

Turtle already covered that RR somehow manages to make the pedal steel sound like caca

>> Turtle already covered that RR somehow manages to make the pedal steel sound like caca

So the only acceptable source of information about RR’s pedal steel sound is Turtle. Who knew?

smiley

Hey man, if you wanna claim RR as one of the best pedal steel players that’s on you.  Don’t try and make this about Turtle.

Hey man. You are the one who dropped Turtle’s name into this discussion.  The quote is from your post.

I get where Turtle is coming from; I've heard Robert Randolph sound like nails on a chalkboard, but I've also heard him add subtle brilliance within a group setting, and I've heard him simply tear a room apart.

Turtle probably just needs to get out more.

RR, Cage, and I'll throw in Rusty Young - all like to make the pedal steel sound like something other than what it is.

Thar's usually a bad thing.

i missed gdad's pedal steel guy last night around the corner..

don't know how you "old guys" do it on school nights.
