Phil & Friends "bubble"

Forums:

Perhaps Phil is happy to lay low and play music with his family in a safe setting, but can't help but wonder if he's still thought about playing with others; and if this thing is going to last for a while, what about a bubble?

It was actually the most recent Friday Night Cheese from '99 with Peter Rowan that got me thinking about him, Phil, and others who aren't getting any younger.  Hopefully, everyone will be healthy and fired up to play together once we're all on the other side of this, but it's looking like at least another year .. and time marches on.

I suspect Shappy would be more than happy to be the ringleader on such an effort.

Most musicians can't afford to lay around Marin County waiting for a one off gig that won't cover the rent.

I'm fairly certain that Phil would love to be on a stage playing live music, but the guy is at the very top of most susceptible people to die if catching the plague, so if he's smart he'll continue laying around Marin County, relying on the money he's earned through his skill & effort.

That cheese show was so strong

Viva Phil, smart man to protect his life. Dues paid.

I hope his life is full, even without being out in the world playing music. I love the views from where he lives of the scrub oak and sky, water and Tam. When it's foggy I bet he gets that incredible view of the tops of nearby hills as "floating islands" - when my parents lived high up in San Anselmo (the top of Oak Ave.) the floating islands were magical.

I agree about Phil being extremely vulnerable and certainly not suggesting that he owes us anything, but if for some reason he's really itching to make something happen that he could feel safe about, why not consider a really stringent "bubble" paradigm with other musicians who might be in the same boat who he could trust?    Forget about Shappy, let Phil and the inner circle devise the plan and call the shots.  Keep it really small and everyone signs off on it in blood!  No roadies even, let alone "last minute Levi's" (who worked on Bobby's electrical or whatever)  get let in.

I'm sure Peter Rowan, Dave Nelson, Bobby, etc. aren't looking to get knocked down by this either ... although I can see how it quickly becomes a can of worms.

The Flaming Lips are way ahead of the curve on this one;

For someone in his situation, even if he's careful the risk/reward still seems more than a bit skewed against him.

I was surprised he played that one set at TxR last month. Even with him going straight from his car to the stage and then leaving the same way with staff clearing a large path for him, it still seems risky for an 80-year-old with multiple health issues.

But he will probably do something like that again, playing little one-offs outside in his park, but I doubt it will be anything raging or particularly memorable. I imagine if he were younger he'd try something more substantial, but that microscopic devil is still all around us so I figure he's going to be conservative with his public appearances, as well he should be.

The TXR thing was surprising to me as well, but was thinking more along the lines of a TRI sort of thing where it's just the musicians and someone running sound +their significant others / immediate family who have also agreed to the terms of the bubble ... which gets broadcast outward.  At least the bubble can be contained in a closed setting vs. public venue where all bets are off.

There have been regular small outdoor gigs in Telluride on main street where there's outdoor dining area.  I've wandered into a few of them, but haven't been able to stay planted for more than 10-15 minutes before feeling the need to leave.  I see people that I know who are "close talkers" in normal times; hugging without masks & know that these sorts of gatherings can quickly throw social curveballs that can be challenging to contend with.   I can only imagine the curveballs someone such as Phil might encounter along these lines.

I suspect the risk/reward is skewed against him, by the same token wonder if under the right circumstances the reward could outweigh well-mitigated risks for the right people in a closed environment?  At this stage and on more realistic terms, I'm assuming the "right people" would be his immediate family & it's easily the most controllable situation.

Phil has plenty of ca$h and doesn't need the income from playing TXR.  So if he feels like playing at his venue,  he will work something out.

Maybe he is bored of the whole TXR scene and taking a Break to relax  a while.

Cool and effective bubbles, Burnz.

Trey's first Beacon Jams sounded good.

I want to go to a bubble show!!!
TXR should do that, it would be hysterical!

Do people really expect phil to keep touring outside of txr after this whole thing? The guy is 80 years old lol. He's done
