Rolling Thunder Revue 1975 Recordings Box Set Giveaway

Forums:

In honor of Bob Dylan's 80th birthday, I have the box set of the Rolling Thunder Revue's 1975 recordings to give away. I picked this up when it came out a few years back, and ripped it to FLACs, so I really don't need the CDs anymore.

The contest works like this. Name your favorite original Bob Dylan song, and include a write-up of at least 200 words (which is just about the length of this post) about why it's your favorite. Now, I know it's not easy to pick just one Dylan song as a favorite, but if you want to win the box set, that's what you're going to have to do here.

I can't say for sure yet how I'm going to pick the winner, but I can say it will based on your write-up, and not the song you pick. I'll be looking for something that comes from the heart, for sure, and style might come into play too; e.g. if your write-up is done in the style of Dylan's writing in the song you're writing about, I might be impressed enough to deem you the winner.

This contest will end this Friday, May 28, 2021 at 11:59 PM PDT.

Swell contest mike. Look forward to reading the picks and their stories

No spot taken.

Very nice of you, mike.

I'm looking forward to the story tellers here sharing their tales. Crabneesh, Lance, and all of the ones I'm not thinking of right now.

Tangled Up In Blue

And I'll tell ya why.
I did a co-op semester at Antioch College, started off on a bus from New Jersey down to Lynchburg to work with Habitat for Humanity, then hitchhiked to Tennessee and lived with Food Not Bombs, then to upstate NY in the back of a truck bed with a futon, then to Erie for a rendezvous to Chicago, then back to school in Ohio. And then I wrote a song about it, to Tangled Up In Blue. Recorded it with one guitar on a cassette, turned it in and got co-op credit.

Great Great Offer, no spot taken

This is my fav Dylan recording and already have this, what and great period for Dylan imho

Good luck to all who play, shocked more people have not replied

I'm not really into a story-telling mood lately, but I'd like to thank you, Mike, for rekindling my love for one Bob Dylan song in particular.  I've been listening to that song quite a bit over the last 24 hours and it really fits my mood, given the past 14-or-so months, and the last two weeks in particular.

As a small kid, I listened to the albums that my father loved, from the likes of The Beach Boys, Beatles, The Association. The Who, and The Doors.  As I grew older, my favorite radio station was KNRY, an AM oldies station running out of old Cannery Row in Monterey.  Through that station, I became a fan (but not a fanatic) of Bob Dylan songs, even those that he performed (j/k).  As a teen, I started to collect records and generally stuck with LPs "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" and "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2".  That was pretty much all I needed from him for several years.

Over time, I collected all of the albums from "Freewheelin'" to "Nashville Skyline" and later, "Slow Train Coming" (I know, I missed some incredible albums in-between).

So, that was generally it.  I never went to a Bob Dylan concert, with the exception of Dylan and the Dead in Oakland (enjoyed that!).

Fast forward several years and I'm going through a "clearance movie soundtracks CDs" phase.  I picked up the "Wonder Boys - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" and saw a promising mix of Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Tom Rush, Neil Young, Tim Hardin, Clarence Clemens, Leonard Cohen, John Lennon, Van Morrison, and others.

I took the CD home that evening and started listening to it while relaxing.  I can't remember exactly what I was doing, but I found the music to be familiar and relaxing.  What I didn't find very familiar were the Dylan songs on this soundtrack.  Not quite like the earlier recordings that I had listened to so often.  And, frankly, a welcome change to my aging ears.  Having these new (to me) Dylan songs spaced between other artists' tunes made them sound more singular and powerful to me.  I can't remember what I was going through at the time, but the opening tune, "Things Have Changed", sounded to me like a mix of JJ Cale & quiet Dire Straits, with a sense of forsaken, aimless wandering from life.  Other's songs evened things out, then there was Dylan's "Shooting Star" a beautifully quiet, pensive song, with nice textures, but inevitably the shooting star slips away...

OK, well it looks like I have started telling a story.  And I'm being called away before I can even finish it!

Thanks again for the thread, Mike.

Another mikee give away,, trying his best to gather some zoner love. WTF man, are you the type of guy whose parents had to tie a pork chop around your neck just so the dog would play with you ?

Just fuckin with you dude,, hell of an offer,, who TF is better than you ! Possibly judit, that's about it.

My favorite Bob tune is probably his darkest - it's alright ma I'm only bleeding. When the easy rider soundtrack came out it was a precarious time in my life. I was 11 and my dad was into his 2nd year of Parkinson's so my mom was preoccupied with him, at the same time I was left to spend most of my time with my next oldest brother who was (and still is) the ultimate abusive asshole (to not ruin your day I'll spare you the specifics). Anyway when that album came out, the effect that tune, as well as if 6 was 9, had on me was profound to say the least. Music saved my life, and those songs were a huge part of my survival. Fuck all that happy mr tambourine man horse shit,, aint no sense in tryin is what made me try, just to get myself thru.

Awesome fucking offer mikee,, you be da man !

IMO, it belongs to Bettye now.smiley

Well, last night it seemed that I had a lot to say.

Perhaps my current ambivalence is a good match for the themes of my favorite Dylan tune:

"Not Dark Yet"

To my ears, it's a recollection of life's experiences, a distanced report of current events, and an acceptance of (no, a resignation to)  what imminent struggles lie ahead.

Bob's relatively calm, tuneful vocal delivery invites me into what he has to say.

The instrumental sounds/tones are beautiful, slow paced, soothing, simple, and atmospheric, allowing contemplation between verses of what has just been shared with the listener.  As the song progresses, the smooth, slightly simmering instruments raise the intensity only slightly at the outro - just enough for a little emotional response at the very end.

It seems to have just about everything I need to be thoroughly moved.

That's about it.

Shadows are fallin' and I've been here all day
It's too hot to sleep and time is runnin' away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I've still got the scars that the sun didn't heal
There's not even room enough to be anywhere
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there

Well, my sense of humanity has gone down the drain
Behind every beautiful thing there's been some kind of pain
She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind
She put down in writin' what was in her mind
I just don't see why I should even care
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there

Well, I've been to London and I been to gay Paris
I've followed the river and I got to the sea
I've been down on the bottom of the world full of lies
I ain't lookin' for nothin' in anyone's eyes
Sometimes my burden is more than I can bear
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there

I was born here and I'll die here against my will
I know it looks like I'm movin' but I'm standin' still
Every nerve in my body is so naked and numb
I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from
Don't even hear the murmur of a prayer
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there

Nice thread Mike. I have these so I'm good.

Good choices Johnnyd. 2 classics.

I clearly remember seeing him do Things Have Changed live for the second time ever down in San Louis Obispo in 2000.

When he got to the line "If the Bible is right, the world will explode," my mind was blown, because the delivery was so intense it was like

hearing it from "God" himself.....whatever that is. (It didn't hurt that we were 10 feet from the guy and he was ON).

One of those moments in live music that make you go back for more and more. And Johnny, he clearly thought there was something to the song,

as for YEARS he opened every show with it.

By coincidence, today I saw one of the owners of Amoeba Records; he's a big Dylan fan and knows I'm one too.

He gave me a copy of Bob at the Grand Theater in San Francisco on 10-13-04, which I was at, so that was very cool of him.

((((People who love music and share it)))).

Epilogue:

I was able to catch "Not Dark Yet" live one time.

Me too, jklowan, and I'm even more surprised folks don't seem to have read the directions. I'm not seeing a single post that qualifies yet.

I'd say Nathaniel and Raz were close enough, just a little short of 200....They both stated the "what" and the "why".

Nathaniel's post was 100 words. Ras' write up about his favorite Dylan song was 151 words; I didn't count his shit-talking and/or his praise.

Do I still detect an air of grudge mikee ?? C'mon yer better then that. Loosen up that keyster a bit fella.

Lol tight sphincters, a zoner tradition from a wayback.

Grudge? WTF are you talking about, Ras? The requirements for this giveaway are clear, and you didn't meet them.

Thanks for thinking about my sphincter though. Maybe next you can think about pulling your head out of yours. Or not.

Word count, shit I didn't notice, it's not something I do, reminds me of worthless term papers. As far as not fucking around with folks I thought could take it here in the zone - what you call head up ass - well that's never gonna happen, but I now know what you are, so I'll stear clear of you.

Generally speaking, the ability to not laugh at yourself when poked is truly a zoner unique  deformaty, dontcha think ?

They didn't have no sense of humor
Now they got nothing left
To laugh about
Including themselves - FZ

Raz is like this on purpose. Nobody knows him so he's insulated. No one will run into him at a mule show in Connecticut and say jeeez you're an asshole because he doesn't want anyone to know who he is.

You do what you need to do, Ras, and I'll do the same. Admitting that you don't actually read other people's posts tells me all I need to know.

I do not have a review, But I have a short tale relating to a Zone experience and the Rolling Thunder Review.

2012 was the year I started meeting up w/Zoners at shows. One of the first was Box of Eyes. So, when I saw a flyer for ElseFest, a small local festival featuring Stringdusters only a week away I hit Box up to find out if he was going. He was and was camping there with friends.

I came for the final day, found Box quickly, he introduced me to the couple he was camping with, they gave me the once over, we did not speak much, I found that a little odd… anyway I digress.

The RTR connection is Todd Sheaffer (RRE) played a set with David Mansfield (Rolling Thunder Review). I can’t find that set on archive, but the Dusters set from that night is below.  I recall the lights on the relatively small stage went out during their set at one point.

The Lights…yes it was Lights and his Lady camping with Box. I never met Chris again but every encounter I have ever had since with LadyLights has been as if I were her old childhood friend.

Never miss a Sunday show.  Love to all no exceptions. Enjoy the Memorial Day Weekend and keep those we have lost in your hearts.

I'll play. While I love a lot of Dylan's stuff probably my two favorites are Positively Fourth Street and Simple Twist Of Fate. For this exercise I'll choose the latter. The reason is pretty simple. When I first heard the song I was on the brink, it was all about me I really think, I was so shook I took a drink, and smoked another joint, really what was the point, but now I could relate, was life really just a simple twist of fate. When I first met her I did not care, but  I was mesmerized by her long black hair, she always had that savoir faire, and I just didn't fit in, I knew I'd never win, the pressure was to great, now I could blame it on a simple twist of fate. I had to find out what I didn't know, find the places I had to go, but ended up at another show, the music did me in, it was where I did fit in, the Dead were really great, and it really was a simple twist of fate.

Oh mikee mike, I read your 'rules' bro, I just don't count words. Didn't think it really mattered all that much. I got my point across, anymore would have been a waste, you understand.

Slackster there is NOBODY who has ever called me an asshole after meeting me. You thinking somebody would just shows what a little toy brain you have. Folks are content being with who they choose at shows, whatever,  all good with me. If zoners say they'd like to meet me at a show, I bring special gifts for em, if they choose not to meet up, the gifts go to others, sometimes strangers. I have a blast with friends or total strangers at shows, how bout you ? Variety truly is the spice of life.  You think fun begins and ends with hanging with zoners you already know ? LOL you think way too much of yourself, as many zoners do.

Ras, why do you have to make every thread you post in all about you?

Possibly cuz I was singled out by you brother. You feel the need to point things out, me too, its all good, or should be. Plus ain't there way too few LOL's circulating on this list to just go with the status fucking quo in every thread ? Don't you find, occasionally going against the grain to be the least bit funny ? No ?  Well my bad.

Ever see when Moon fucks with the tv interviewer in The Kids Are Alright movie ? "Ohh can't ruffle your trousers now can we" ?  It's kinda like that. Love to all mikee, no exceptions, not even slackster.

Ras, you were singled out, as was every other person who posted an entry here that didn't meet the requirements, so that you could fix things up and maybe win this thing.

You're welcome, brother.

Fuckin A,, I always knew you were a cut above. Sorry for the excessive trouser ruffling

It's difficult to ruffle my trousers when I'm not wearing any.

So did Dylan play "It's Alright Ma" at that Waterbury show? Seems like that would be a good way to flesh out your post if he did.

Seen Bob a good 30- 40 times, never seen him perform it. Here's the audio of the show I was at >

Bty - appropriate responses to my initial ruffling would sound something like - rib eye bone bitch, nuthin but the best in my family.

Also acceptable would be - can't you even count to 200 you ignant sum bitch.

Believe me I can take a joke.

My favorite ever Dylan show was at the nuclear sub base in Groton,, still looking for a decent audio.

One of the times I've seen Dylan was at an amusement park in western CT in the late 80s, I think it was. It was a Sunday and rained like hell, but Bob didn't play any rain songs. Timbuk 3 opened. Maybe you were there?

You know it,, Lake Compounce in Bristol.

Had tickets but me and my buddy decided in a buzzed stupor to scale the fence cuz it was close to where we parked. Security nailed us and made us re-scale and walk around to the main gate. That kind'a sucked but we still made it in for showtime. That buddy is now passed - RIP Jim, we had a blast didn't we ?

Oh, very cool. While I do buy most Dylan releases, I somehow missed getting this one yet.

So I have been diving deep into Dylan lately, and picking a favorite seems nearly impossible....
That said, I will confidently offer up Simple Twist of Fate.
There have been occasions when I have declared that it might the be the perfect song, period.
The meander of the meter and the clean, pure, sentimental resolve of the melody play deeply to my inner wiring.
Some lines, such as "People tell me it's a sin, to know & feel too much within" are kinda Biblical in their profundity.

It's a song about the random indifference of the human experience, and the luck with which we are blessed in knowing each other.
What more does one need in a song?

And all that does not even get the the Jerry-gasmic qualities. Some of my favorite Dylan is unsurprisingly the Dylan that Jerry chose to cover.
And Jerry certainly gave this song a ton of sparkling, reverential love, over the years.

I honestly don't mind if someone else wins this set, I am just happy to have a thread in which to declare my love for Bob Dylan.
Please share with me the wonder of this tune, by reading through & beholding such epic, Shakespearesque wonder:

They sat together in the park
As the evening sky grew dark
She looked at him and he felt a spark tingle to his bones
’Twas then he felt alone and wished that he’d gone straight
And watched out for a simple twist of fate

They walked along by the old canal
A little confused, I remember well
And stopped into a strange hotel with a neon burnin’ bright
He felt the heat of the night hit him like a freight train
Moving with a simple twist of fate

A saxophone someplace far off played
As she was walkin’ by the arcade
As the light bust through a beat-up shade where he was wakin’ up,
She dropped a coin into the cup of a blind man at the gate
And forgot about a simple twist of fate

He woke up, the room was bare
He didn’t see her anywhere
He told himself he didn’t care, pushed the window open wide
Felt an emptiness inside to which he just could not relate
Brought on by a simple twist of fate

He hears the ticking of the clocks
And walks along with a parrot that talks
Hunts her down by the waterfront docks where the sailors all come in
Maybe she’ll pick him out again, how long must he wait
Once more for a simple twist of fate

People tell me it’s a sin
To know and feel too much within
I still believe she was my twin, but I lost the ring
She was born in spring, but I was born too late
Blame it on a simple twist of fate

In my opinion, so far, I think Cam should win. He stuck to the parameters more completely and very eloquently than I did by stating why it was his favorite, where I really didn't. As always a big thanks to Mike for doing this. He represents the best of what in my humble opinion is what the Zone is supposed to be about.

I should say that for a large part of my life I've always fancied my self to be some sort of writer/lyricist, I've never really done much with whatever skill or talent I might have. I'm not a musician, (though I have a bunch of tunes running around in this crazy brain of mine). I did play an instrument when I was in grade middle school, but it always felt like a chore, maybe because it was a little forced on me and I hated to practice and it didn't come naturally. I also didn't realize until my teenage years and beyond, how much I would get into and enjoy music. Though on occasion I had the opportunity to, I also never really hooked up with a musician that needed a lyricist or might be able to do something with the stuff in my head. So mostly whatever I've written has been for myself.

In any event, (and this is not for the contest) getting back to the subject at hand, while I've read and enjoyed many writers and poets, in my lifetime for me the two greatest wordsmiths are Bob Dylan and Robert Hunter and I've definitely incorporated both their styles into my work. They have both touched and reached me in countless ways. That being said and for no particular reason other than this seems like as good a place as any, I will share for the first time publicly anywhere an original piece I wrote some 20 odd years ago. To steal a line from The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, "just take what you need and leave the rest ".

It’s Sunday and I’m driving on the parkway

You could not ask for a finer day

Once again a tune stuck in my head

Trying to find just the right words to say

It seems like someone’s always said it better

I’ve got to say that really irritates

But driving always seems to relax me

And good conversation stimulates

If you in this perhaps can find some meaning

Or if it simply serves to get your goat

Up to me it really makes no difference

It’s up to you whatever floats your boat

Blue skies and the road stretch out before me

There’s more ahead than what’s behind my back

If it seems that you have lost direction

You can always take another tack

There’s times that I have felt it overwhelming

But passion is something that I’ve never lacked

The bear is dancing from my rear view mirror

But Jerry’s dead and that is just a fact

Some people think it’s in the destination

But when you’re stuck how will you cross the moat

I will try on stilts in tux and high hat

For you it’s whatever floats your boat

Float you boat, float your boat

Read between the lines that I just wrote

Float your boat, float your boat

Find out whatever floats your boat

Float your boat, float your boat

Sail off to an island that’s remote

Float your boat, float your boat

Sail off with me and say that’s all she wrote

Don’t think to hard about what I am saying

Just let it go and leave it to the fates

There are to many matters left unspoken

Than spoken one’s to which no one relates

If it seems that you are always searching

For something that you had and now is lost

Will you know where to go to seek it

And will you pay no matter what the cost

I do not have the wherewithal to guide you

But if you’re cold I’ll let you wear my coat

I can only choose the things that I do

You can choose whatever floats your boat

Sometimes my mind is much to introspective

I think it has to do with attitude

Lost in thought my mood can be reflective

And lately I’m just filled with gratitude

It feels real nice to be in this process

It seems like it’s been long overdue

As I make this journey up these twelve step

I really wish that you could share the view

The words don’t often flow this easy

Often they get stuck inside my throat

I can fill my sails when it’s breezy

You have to find whatever floats your boat

Float you boat, float your boat

Read between the lines that I just wrote

Float your boat, float your boat

Find out whatever floats your boat

Float your boat, float your boat

Sail off to an island that’s remote

Float your boat, float your boat

Sail off with me and say that’s all she wrote

Agreed, nice entry by Cam.

Nice to see this thread gather steam, even if a lot of it is off-topic.

Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 is my favorite Bob Dylan song for three reasons:

One - It has the word “stone“ in it numerous times. Twenty, if I counted right. There just aren’t many songs that mention my favorite artistic medium, so it immediately rises to the top of my list.

Two - It’s probably the only crowd sing-a-long song I can tolerate (besides maybe a Not Fade Away at the end of a really hot Dead show).

Three - It can easily be rearranged as a contemporary jingle to accompany a Phil fan's favorite online activity:

Well, you’ll be Zonin when you’re walkin’ ’long the street
You’ll be Zonin when you’re tryin’ to keep your seat
You’ll be Zonin when you’re walkin’ on the floor
You’ll be Zonin when you’re walkin’ to the door
But I would not feel so all alone
Every Zoner must get stoned

You’ll be Zonin when you’re at the breakfast table
You’ll be Zonin when you are young and able
You’ll be Zonin when you’re tryin’ to make a buck
You’ll be Zonin and then they’ll say, “dumb fuck”
Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone
Every Zoner must get stoned

Not sure if this has been mentioned here before, if so I missed it, but here's a pretty cool Rolling Thunder tid bit about the darling Scarlet Rivera who added so much to that tour  -

There’s this legend about how you got discovered by Bob Dylan when he was going in for recording sessions or rehearsals for his album Desire, and that he saw you on the street. Is this true? What’s the story?

" Well, it’s true. Literally, I was walking down the street in NYC with my violin case. It was like one in a billion that he would be on the same street that I’m walking on that second. I was going to walk across the street within seconds and go into a basement apartment. I would’ve been out of sight within one minute. His car pulled up before I could cross the street and he engaged me in conversation. By the end of it, he said he had to hear me play. I got in the car and we went to his SoHo loft, and he started playing all kinds of songs that I could never have heard before; they were never released. No key, no chart, no suggestion, nothing. Sink or swim. Then he went to the piano, played a few more songs, a tiny little smile, and that’s it. Then he asked me if I wanted to go to a club with him to see a friends of his play. I sat at the bar and I was just expecting to watch the whole show from the bar. He was with Muddy Waters and the band, and at the end of one song, he went to the mic and said, “Now, I want to bring up my violinist." "

20210528_175010.jpg

^And either on her violin case, or on the violin itself, was a good -size Blues For Allah sticker......

Can't wait for the tour announcement.

Bring it on Bob!

Rivera had a Blues for Allah fiddler on her violin. What's kind of interesting is Blues for Allah was released on September 1, 1975, and the Rolling Thunder Revue tour began on October 30, 1975. The strange thing is that van Dorp, who's alleged to be the filmmaker who shot the original footage, is a fictional character in Scorsese's RTR film.

Forever Young

A song so nice Bob Dylan recorded it twice on the Planet Waves album. The song works (for me,anyway) at both the slow and more strident tempos. I have personally played "Forever Young" at birthday celebrations for people from 9 to 90 years old. I have also played it at celebrations of life for deceased friends and family members, somehow succeeding to complete the song without breaking down in tears.

I first heard Jerry Garcia Band play it in person at Squaw Valley in 1991. After hearing Jerry's version I felt compelled to learn it. The fairly simple chord changes of the verses lead to the simple but GRAND changes of the chorus.

Singing "Forever Young" to the memory of my dear departed Father-in-Law within the confines of a cathedral prompted his secretary of over 30 years to remark, "You knocked it out of the park". Thank you, Lori (and Eli).

Dylan wrote "Forever Young" in Tucson, Arizona, "thinking about" one of his sons and "not wanting to be too sentimental". (From Wikipedia)

This revelation speaks to how Dylan's lyrics work on so many levels and in so many contexts. Jerry spoke of Robert Hunter's "economy of words"; both Dylan and Hunter packed so much meaning into so few words. As with Hunter's lyrics, I have personally interpreted Dylan's words in a myriad of different ways depending on my mood, physical state, mental state, etc.

"Forever Young" continues to inspire me to find encouragement in the process of writing my own songs and performing them by myself and with others.

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

It's time to pick a winner here, and you people haven't made this decision an easy one for me. Thanks for all of your entries.

I'm just now remembering the way it felt back in December when it came time for me to pick a winner in the Europe 72 giveaway, and that feeling has a name: dread. I hope I don't fuck this up somehow. lol

That said, I think I have to agree with Jamspace and Johnny D's nomination of Cam and his write-up about Simple Twist of Fate. If I had to explain the reasoning behind my decision, it's think it's because he really let us have it with both barrels of two very big guns: Dylan and Garcia. I swear, while I was reading Cam's post about Twist of Fate, it felt like I had Dylan playing in my left ear and Jerry in the right. Jerry-gasmic, indeed, and pretty darn Bob-tastic too.

My email is in my profile, Cam. Shoot me a note with your mailing address, and I'll get the box set out to you first part of next week.

So that wraps up the contest portion of this thread, but that doesn't mean the talk has to stop here. Like Johnny D said, this thread picked up some steam.

I also want to offer to seed an old school style vine of the FLACs of the RTR box set if anyone is interested. The collection is about 3.2 GB, and I happen to have a blank USB drive sitting on my desk, so if someone wants to start a vine list here, I'll send out the USB drive to number one on the list, and things can go from there.

Congrats Cam -  You da man mikee

Ok y'all can start the ball busting about me not being a true dylan fan for not already owning it. Price kept me from pulling the trigger,,, I had to pass on lots of stuff the past few years to get my kids their degrees. (deleted by Admin)

If I had all the money I've spent on shows over the years, I could buy the Taj Mahal

Ras, send me an email with your mailing address and I'll get the USB drive out to you first part of next week.

Also, in the future, please refrain from using racist language in my threads. Even if it's the self-deprecating kind, it's not cool at all, dude.

On 2nd thought, no thanks mikee, not interested in dealing with folks so easily offended.

Well now

One certainly can't hide class like that.

Your loss, Ras. Once you're over your butthurt, feel free to rejoin the vine if you like.

Funny you mention that, I was just thinking about the good ol days myself,, that will not return.

Not the old philzone of course, that place was always run by boring full of themselves cunts, I'm talkin the best music scene of all,, the oooooold mule stall when it was all snail mail and you could -  cunt, cocksucker, or mutherfuck any asshole who dared try and tell you how to express yourself,,, yet at shows dismiss all that stuff, and hug, kiss and share in the vibe, cuz that's all that matters. No bossy fuckwads, no grudge holders. They were much more in tune to the infinite, and were your friends for life. Still are, and its a real pleasure when you see em. No pretenses, huge senses of humor, and just plain more mature. Man is shit different today. Could be coincidental but I blame fucking Allen Woody,, when that fucker checked out lots changed. Now there's far too many soft, constant bug up their ass, self neutered, self righteous assholes hanging around in too many music scenes. The times they are a changin for the worse,, god damm do I miss them good ol days.

we talkin' usb vine, ya?

Congrats to Cam, great write up. I thought I'd post on this thread eventually, never quite sure anymore. At this moment in time Mr Tambourine Man is laying me low. Just slaying me! That final verse must be pure poetry, although I'll be the first to admit I know little of poetry. In case you need that verse refreshed:

And take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind
Down the foggy ruins of time
Far past the frozen leaves
The haunted frightened trees
Out to the windy beach
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
With one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea
Circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate
Driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Funny, but this song was never amongst my most favorite Dylan creations.  All that has changed in the last couple weeks.  This thread did it.  I was going to try and win that RTR box set, so of course I started thinking, "What song should I pick."  Well I couldn't f'ing pick one and then Tambourine Man picked me.  I just watched a rendition of the Byrds performing it with Dylan and it left me in tears. It is actually quite relieving to know that even a well worn shoe of a song can still unexpectedly do that to me. Bob was always my favorite as I tried to grow up through the '60's and early '70's. Didn't discover Jerry and the Boys until 1977, by then a solid twenty years old. But Bob accompanied me through my maturing into humanity.  That shit don't ever get old.  That said, I'm really surprised that a Dylan song I knew well could still suddenly strike me low as if hearing it for the first time.  I can't imagine being more blessed than to have the sound track of my life be populated with the likes of Dylan snd Jerry. and ...so many more.

Thread inspires.

Cool.

gunkman, the amazing thing about Dylan to me is that he was writing songs like Mr. Tambourine Man when he was in his early 20s, but I didn't start really  understanding them until I was well into my 50s. It's like you need some serious life experience before they really come alive, even though Dylan was writing them when he was still relatively inexperienced.

^Good point

I haven't listened to his older songs in a long time.

Perhaps Not Dark Yet  will be dethroned.

The rhyme scheme of the chunk gunnkman posted is really interesting too. You can easily see the lines are very different lengths, and it's the end rhyme structure that holds the whole thing together. It starts off with a pair of near rhymes with "mind" and "time", then moves to another pair of lines with near rhymes (and a cool zooming out of the arboreal image) with "frozen leaves" and "haunted frightened trees".

In the fifth line, we're left with "beach", and then in the sixth line things get really interesting with the "each" sound repeated in the middle of the line, which then ends in "sorrow". At this point, the rhyme structure that's been established has been abandoned, which forces a closer consideration of the line that might well be the heart of the verse: "Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow".

Following that, we return for a line to the ending "I" sound of the first and second lines, followed by two lines ending in the "E" sound of the third and fourth lines, which are then followed by three lines featuring a variety of "A" sounds; one, a short "A" (sands), and two are long ("fate" and "waves"). With "sands" and "waves" (sonically and visually, yin and yang) we also get that cool zooming out of the image again too.

And with the last line of this passage, we once again hear the sounds of "sorrow" repeated, the placement of which reveals a super-structure. If the problem of this verse is "crazy sorrow", then the solution lies in letting "me forget about today until tomorrow".

Which is all well and good, but it leaves me to wonder: Who in the hell was the Tambourine Man?

"Bruce Langhorne, the folk musician and session guitarist that inspired Bob Dylan's classic song “Mr. Tambourine Man,” died Friday at his home in Venice, California.Apr 17, 2017"

Asked and answered in eight minutes. Nice work, Surfdead. Thanks.

Of course, this means we now have the intentional fallacy to consider.

A phrase coined by the American New Critics W. K. Wimsatt Jr and Monroe C. Beardsley in an essay of 1946 to describe the common assumption that an author's declared or assumed intention in writing a work is a proper basis for deciding upon the work's meaning or value. These critics argued that once a work is published, it has an objective status and its meanings belong to the reading public. Any surmise about the author's intention thus has to be tested against the evidence of the text itself.

Absolutely.. We have to believe Dylan on the inspiration of the song, but the meaning is determined anew every time the song is played or talked about or thought about.

> We have to believe Dylan on the inspiration of the song

We do, but only up to a point. Because he has a subconscious mind, even Dylan himself doesn't fully know what he was thinking.

Point taken. I have no idea what I'm thinking half the time.

Actually, it's more that I have a thousand "thoughts" in my mind at any given moment. Which of those is what I am "thinking"?

I stuck a handful of stickers i'd made into the mailer when i sent it along to JohnnyD.

Did anyone get one?  just curious.

i kept 1, sent the rest on

THANKS !!!

Thanks for passing along the tunes, Mike (and Rob, et al)!

I have saved the FLAC files to my hard drive and converted them for play on my iPhone and iPod.

I left the MP3 files on the USB drive for others who may want them. (Is this sacrilege? I can delete them, if so.)

Who is next in line? Send me an email with shipping address and I'll send it out (eventually, haha).

BTW no stickers found in my mailer, frank3.

sacrilege!

CR, can you suggest a method to play FLAC files on devices? App, perhaps?

>>> i kept 1, sent the rest on

Anyone interested ??

If not I suppose I will send it back to mikee original poster.
Good tunes,  if you like Dylan.  That band was awesome.

I'll take it, and send it along....if directed!

I love it that this thing is still making the rounds. I'd like the USB drive back eventually, but it's not a biggie if I don't get it back.

Awesome and then some, I'd say. The performances of Isis have become some of my all-time favorite rock and roll moments.

I'd love it if still available?!?

John Artis, 'Hurricane' Carter co-defendant in case that inspired Bob Dylan song, dies - Los Angeles Times
https://www.latimes.com/obituaries/story/2021-11-15/john-artis-hurricane...

Dylan became aware of Carter’s plight after reading the boxer’s autobiography. He met Carter and co-wrote the song “Hurricane,” which he performed on his Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1975.

I would love to partake in this vine as well!

Bump for Disco Stu.
