Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll

Forums:

So the local NPR station WYEP here in Pittsburgh is featuring "Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll" all day today, featuring music "from a list curated by musicians, music writers, and critics." So they are playing alot of bands I would expect like Talking Heads, Nirvana, Chuck Berry, Prince, Blondie, etc.

So then they just played Chalkdust Torture by Phish.... I mean really??? How is that a song that shaped rock and roll? It seems totally out of place in this collection. I'm not a Phish hater, but I dont see that as a song that had great influence on rock. Given the nameless source of of this list, I guess it should be expected, but it just seemed really weird.

Ok rant over...

Except Chuck, those were bands that shaped rock, not rock and roll.

Im a fan...and thats just soooo wrong...

Anything by Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley, a few others.

R&R was already "shaped" for a long time before Talking Heads, Nirvana, Prince, Blondie, etc. were formed.

I had to turn it off... after playing Elmore James and BB King they just played Crazy by Gnarls Barkley. What a joke...

I don't care if I die.

If a touch of nihilism is an essential element of rock and roll, then the above is a prime forerunner.
