Venice Beach jumping fish or eel?????

Was beating the heat at Venice Beach sunday after Dodger's Stadium show. Was swimming near the breakers when something feet away would pop out of the water distracting me to point I got wiped out by waves a couple of times. Other people swimming nearby seen it also.
