Who knows the most music catalogs?

Forums:

What musicians and bands seem to know everybody's music?

Jerry Garcia liked music other than the Grateful Dead.

I know Les Claypool can play some Rush.

Bobby knows a lot of Dylan.

Warren Haynes knows a good number of songs.

Springsteen seems to know a bunch

Jimmy Herring knows a lot of other people's songs. Probably more than John Mayer.

Manfred Mann

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band has a huge selection of cover songs pre-programmed in the teleprompter ready to go whenever Bruce decides to drop one. (telepromter has over 500 songs in it) He has also taken sign requests for songs that the band has never done before and not in the teleprompter. The list referenced above is not inclusive and considering the Springsteen wrote Because The Night and Patti Smith simply changed a few lyrics, I think saying that he covers the song is not quite right.

R.E.M was known to do all sorts of out of left field covers whenever the mood struck them.

Pearl Jam is strong with covers.

In a non-live situation one of the strongest showings is Matthew Sweet & Susana Hoffs Under The Covers records of which there are 3 volumes. Good stuff and a really fun listen.

Forgot to mention Richard Thompson who can and will play anything.

Weird Al Yankovic? OK, OK, Don't throw shit. Just kidding.

Can't answer such a question. So many great musicians are into so many other people's music. The list is endless.

Excellent choice. You can't do a good parody unless you really know the original. As an aside, Al's live backing band is as good as any other touring band out there. Super talented.

Radiators knew em ALL

Hornsby.

I've seen sets flow from Miles to hillbilly stuff, GD, Dylan and an Idol With A Golden Head.

The Piano Man (or men)....its their job as theyre breaking in....

From AABA TO ZZ TOP....

So far, I have over 1,200 tunes available for each show, including 50 or so of my own. I have played everyone of them at some point over the years.
Since I primarily play bars, a lot of these come from requests and I keep adding to the pile. Most of them are arranged for my voice and tailored to either the way I like to interpret them or how I think they would sound based on the styles of other musicians who play with me.
Feel free to list some tunes in the thread. I love new grist for the mill. smiley

The Led Zeppelin had a knack for whipping out old blues numbers.

When Phish did their open-to-fans soundcheck on the beach in Italy 1997, they invited people to come onstage (one at a time) to sing ANY tune they wanted, and the band would play it behind them. (Turned into a bit of a gong show, but it was a pretty bold gesture).

Our band sticks to Neil and Bob. The picks are plentiful. Here's a blazing setlist from last night in Crockett at Toot's Tavern. Shakey Zimmerman with Cmac and Scott Law:
