2022 Grow Season

Forums:

I'm about 6 weeks out from starting some seeds indoors. This year, I'll be planting Chemdawg, Blue Dream, and Tahoe Kush. What strains are you looking at for this year?

MMXX (fem) from Twenty20 , Matanuska Thunder Fuck (reg) from Fyre, The Cypher (reg) from Dojo and I just got some autos from Twenty20, Triks and Trizzlers. Got a bunch of regular freebies including Han Slo Hoe (reg) from Bat Country Farms I'll have to sort out.

https://www.soaknbeans.com/shop/regular-seeds/han-slo-hoe-detail

Gold Leaf - really a great strain for Vermont. High yield (over 1 lb per plant), disease resistant, and a great buzz.

Also a DosIdos and a Northern Lights. I'll also throw out a couple of auto flowers, just for fun.

Is Gold Leaf that secret strain you grew last year, BK?

Not sure if it's secret, but it's proprietary to ILGM. The lineage is secret.

>>The lineage is secret.

all that really matters is that you like the strain, because growing and smoking should be nothing but enjoyable, but whenever a breeder claims "secret lineage" it simply means  I took an already known strain and placed a new name on it and I'm calling it mine, and that's all it is. They can't give the lineage out because it would give away the original strain name. There are no secrets left in weed, except for what worthwhile, long term health studies might reveal.

I'll agree with that. Strain names seem pretty arbitrary anyway. With so many cultivators out there, there's absolutely no way the final product will be consistent.

For instance, I had a strain of Scooby Snacks that I loved. That mother plant died off and I got seeds from a new source. Not only was there no resemblance in the phenos, the buzz was completely different. Each cultivator may have created the Scooby from the same lineage names, but who's to say that the GSC one used was anything similar to the other's GSC?

>>>With so many cultivators out there, there's absolutely no way the final product will be consistent.

it would be if cultivators and breeders would be honest with one another, but when so much money's involved,  there's always going to be the temptation to cheat for profit.

I hope everyone has a great growing season this year! I always enjoy the pics.

I just ordered a small LED panel for the closet where I start my seedlings. It's only 100W and is supposed to be good for a 3'x3' footprint, which is pretty much what I need. I'm amazed at how much the prices on these things have gone down. I picked this one up for $40 on Amazon.

A friend sold me a 2x2 tent and light for a song, and I ordered a vent fan and timer. Total investment was maybe $150.

Just for fun I threw in a couple of autoflowers, a Skittlez and a Wedding Cake. I harvest this Friday.

Sounds like a pretty sweet set-up, BK. And those girls are looking real nice too. How much do you think you'll yield per plant?

I'm guessing about 1 oz per plant, give or take. The autos are quick and easy. You don't trim back at all, and the nutes are 30-50% of what you'd normally use.

I gave my buddy a Blueberry auto seed, and he ran it indoors. Interestingly, although his buds were much nicer looking than what I got outdoors, it has much less THC.

How tall are those plants, BK?

A whopping 24" or so. They get a bit bigger outdoors.

Thanks, BK. I'm thinking about trying out a couple of autos indoors after I move my plants (which I'll be planting in a couple of weeks) outdoors in mid-May.

The other thing I was wondering about is the light cycle for autos. Since they're on their own clock, I'm guessing you can give autos more than 12 hours a day and they'll still flower. Is that correct? What light cycle do you have your autos on?

Straight up 18/6. No need to do anything else. I did give nutes, but at 25-33% strength.

Update: Each plant yielded about 24g. That's a pretty good return on investment, in both time and materials.

Got my grow closet set up today. I'm planning to start 8 seeds this coming weekend. Just in time for the equinox.

PXL_20220315_211210065.jpg

It's planting day here. The temps should get up to the low 70s today, and then we have cold rain and snow in the forecast over the weekend, so today's the day to play outside with some dirt and water.

I decided to start 9 seeds. Two each of feminized Blue Dream, Chemdawg #4, and Tahoe Kush from a new vendor; one feminized Blueberry Kush from the brand I grew last year; and two bag seeds: one Mazar from some of Big Steve's Grizzly Peak, and one from some bomb Ghost OG that I got at a dispensary a couple of years ago. If it turns out that all nine germinate, and they all turn out to be females, I'll be looking to adopt out a few out.

What up? I just started in some solo cups inside, this will all be inside btw:

2 -  Apples & Bananas S1 - Compound Genetics

2  - Gary Payton x Jealousy - Seed Junky/Powerzzzup

1 - Stank House - Exotic Genetics

1 - Bubblelegum x Zkittles - CSI Humboldt

3 - Goo (only of my favorites, when it's done right it smells exactly like Fruity Pebbles cereal to me) - ordered from Pacific Seed Bank, only shop that had it.

Just finishing up some Thin Mint GSC, OG Kush x Durban Poision, GSC x Cherry Pie (3 plants)

Had issues with whiteflies, used Neem Oil, didn't really do shit. Resorted to sticky tape hanging. Any advice on this?

thanks all. Happy Growing 2022!

First couple of seedlings popped up today. A Chemdawg and a Blue Dream. Now I need to figure out the best height for my new LED panel. I don't want to give them too much at first, but I don't want them to stretch either.

It's day 5 and I have 100% germination. I planted 9 seeds last Friday and I now have 9 seedlings.

Chemdawg #4 @ 16 days since planting

A buddy is starting my seeds. We're going away at the end of the month, and I don't want the onus to be on the house-sitter. I'm doing 6 plants this year, which should yield 5+ lbs.

- Gold Leaf x 3

- DoSiDo x 2

- Northern Lights x 1

I'll also do a few Autos, just for the fuck of it.

I should probably start smoking more.

Blueberry Kush @ Three Weeks

I really dig these threads and i have learned a lot. I think legal home grow will be available locally after next year's legislative session.  Good for me finally.  I don't like the risk.

I found a site on the web that sells one ounce samples(slightly more than a thousand)of hemp seeds for like 5 bucks.

The local narcotics squad(jump out boys ,slang) are located on the compound (about 50 acres) I am employed at.  A lot of time I am onsight by my self.

I will retire the end of 2023.

There is a perfect place off any camera view on the riverside of a barbed wire security fence about 150 ' to plant the seeds in an obvious place yet camouflaged by weed shrubbery.  I grab raw river water samples for analysis pre- purification daily . I'm not the only one that goes there.  The spot is accessible from the river.

The website that sells the hempseed in bulk claims 12' tall plants.

It'll be fascinating to watch if they are discovered around October or earlier.

I'll get a personal kick to retire on.

Any one recommend an all in one tent with gear setup for autoflower?

I'm thinking Brian K might have something to say about tents, Jaz.

I just picked up some Gelato autoflowers for a closet grow after my outdoor harvest is dried and in jars. My first time with autos and I'm kinda curious about sex (story of my life).

>>Any one recommend an all in one tent with gear setup for autoflower?

A friend sold me a 2 x 2 tent with a good light. I don't know the specs. I bought a filter system. It was enough for 2 plants. I'd just go on Amazon and look for a full system with top reviews.

My outdoor gelato auto is really kickass. I know people poo poo auto, but damn, it's up there in THC. I think all autos are fem.

I started two Gelato autoflowers last Friday, and they're just emerged today. They're going in the yard, so I need to get them hardened for the sun pretty quick, I'm thinking. Like maybe a day or two of morning sun and afternoon shade, and then there you go: full sun. Deal with it.

Be careful moving those autos. Even the slight shock can do a number on them because they don't have time to recover. That's why you don't trim or defoliate.

I put my seeds in a cup of water. Once the tail spouted it went in soil, and immediately outside with a plastic bottle "tent" over where the seed was to sprout. Two days, voila!

I germed mine right in the pot (3 gallon) they're going to spend their lives in to eliminate the stress of moving/transplanting them. They're already sprouted, and seem to be digging the sun so far. I'll move them into the shade for the rest of the afternoon though, and then tomorrow they'll get a full day in the sun unless they start showing signs of stress. I'm still working at home, so I can monitor them every time I step outside to have a smoke.

Mine sprouted in a spot that got full southern exposure, hammered by the sun from 6 am - 8 pm. They loved it.

Goodbye, August. That is all.

And hello, September. Looks like I'll have one plant (Blueberry Kush) ready to harvest around October 1st, and then another one (Tahoe Kush) a week or two after that, and then two more (Chemdawg and Blue Dream) that look like they'll be ready around Halloween. This has been an interesting season, by which I mean it did not go at all as planned, but it still looks like I'll be able to fill some jars once it's all said and done.

As for my autoflower project (Gelato), I'm thinking it probably wasn't a good idea to try starting plants outdoors in August. I planted two and they both sprouted in about 5 days, but then their growth has been minimal in the last week. They both have their first, single serrated leaves, but after a week, their first palmate set is just barely emerging. I still have six of these seeds left and will start a few of them indoors around December 1st I'm thinking, which should have them finished a few weeks before I start next years' outdoor crop indoors in late March.

I was super aggressive with my lollipopping this year because I generally get way too much popcorn. I kept them well pruned for June and July, but left them be for the first 3 weeks of August, so they could focus on flowering. I then hacked the shit out of them, cutting out all the understory up to 3.5 - 4', as well as any branches that were going to sap energy from the canopy. It seems to have worked. My shortest plant is a 7' Northern Lights, my tallest are 9' Gold Leafs.

All 6 are in really different phases of flowering, even those of the same strain. One Dosido is on fire, stacking super fat and sticky buds. The other 2 are definitely behind. One GL has massive kolas, reaching for the sky. The thing looks like some crazy Jamaican plant.

> All 6 are in really different phases of flowering

Sounds like you're headed for a staggered harvest, BK, and in my house, that's a very good thing indeed. I have limited space for drying, so it's nice to be able to get one dried, rough trimmed and in jars, and then move onto the next one.

> I was super aggressive with my lollipopping

That's a habit I picked up a few years ago. I start on the lower branches pretty early, and remove pretty much the inner half of those branches, so that all the late veg growth gets directed to nodes I know are going to produce. Then I take care of the upper branches around the time flowering starts. I just don't have time for popcorn/larf/tiny fluffy shit.

I got off to a rough, late start, so I didn't do any topping or training this year, and have a couple of plants, my Tahoe Kush and Blue Dream, that have achieved monster status; well, they're monsters compared to the low, wide plants I've been doing the last few years. The Tahoe is about 6.5 feet, and the Blue Dream is about 7.5, and that's in 10-gallon fabric pots. The problem is my fence is only 6 feet high, and while my house sits above the road out front by about 10-15 feet, you can still see the tops of those two from the road. Makes me a little nervous as we head towards harvest, but that's why my front gate is padlocked most of the time this time of year.

I have a 6' screen fence, but it really isn't doing its job:

I wouldn't mind a staggered harvest, as long as it's all done by the end of the first week of October. At that point the weather is too iffy. A few rainy days in a row, with highs of 55 and lows of 40, and bud rot becomes imminent. The weight of the rain water snaps branches, and hard freezes can also cause problems.

A lot can happen in 5 weeks. I'm hoping that the stragglers catch up.

With my late start, I won't start harvesting until about the first of October, and I'm hoping to get the last of it harvested by Halloween. Weather shouldn't be an issue out here, and I could probably go into November if I need to, but having said that, I'm realizing I might have jinxed myself with the weather gods, so never mind. I take it back.

For some reason I like to harvest all at once. I get really stressed about the weather, drying, and curing, and doing it all at once compartmentalizes the stress into succinct boxes. Once the harvest is done I don't have to worry about weather and rot. I hate worrying about it all at the same time.

It's caterpillar season, and I found my first one of the season yesterday. It was a little guy, probably just under a half inch long, and I only lost a small top of maybe about 2 g I'm thinking, but now I'm on high alert. I ordered a UV flashlight from Amazon the other day that should be here by Wednesday. The pic below is one I saw on Reddit the other day.

We've had over 8" of rain in the last week, with high winds. My gals have held tight. THe weather for the next 10 days in in the 50-60s daytime, mostly 40s at night, with rain every other day. Talk about prime bud rot weather. A buddy just texted me that he lost an entire plant to mold.

Trichromes just clouded up, so I'm hoping I can last another 10 days.

Well, I've lost 10-12 g to caterpillars so far, but I haven't seen any, or any damage, in a few days now. Strange thing is, the damage all happened in one plant; my Tahoe Kush. She's been the most fragrant so far, and I wonder if it has something to do with that.

I'm thinking I'll cut her down on Saturday, and probably my Blueberry Kush too. Their buds look ripe and ready, and the trichomes are pretty much all milky with some ambers mixed in. Part of me thinks I could probably let them go an extra week, and I might end up doing that, but the other part of me wants to get things moving harvest-wise. I got my drying closet set up today, so I'm pretty much ready to go, and the weather's supposed to cool down next week to daytime highs in the 70s, which is kind of key because the closet has a tendency to get pretty warm.

My other two plants, a Chemdawg #4 and a Blue Dream, still need another couple of weeks. The trichomes are mostly milky, but the buds just don't have that ready look yet. The Chemdawg's stigmas are still mostly pale green, and the Blue Dream's are still mostly pink, and the buds on both could still stand to gain some weight.

I just trimmed my early Dosido, and I'm fairly disappointed. I pulled in just shy of 6.5 oz of trimmed bud. I probably have 3-4 oz of popcorn, which should make some decent hash. The pheno on that one was pure indica, with the classic sawtooth leaves, a few feet shorter than the other 2, and finished earlier. I've never done great with those more pure indicas, I do t think they love the weather here.

I also trimmed up the 4 Gold Leaf kolas, and have 3 oz from that alone. The rest of those 2 GL are getting picked tomorrow. I'm looking for monster yields off those 2.

I'm also cutting one more Dosido, which may be the single nicest plant I've ever grown. It started putting on trichromes long before flowering, and is super pungent and sticky. The buds are fat and round. It's just a beautiful plant.

That leaves the Northern Lights and last Dosi, which I'm going to give another week and hope they fatten up some. We'll see.

I went ahead and chopped the Tahoe Kush and the Blueberry Kush today. This is the main cola of the BBK, the runt of  my bunch this year. The platter it's sitting on is 18 inches long.

Looking good, Mike.

Anyone know any magic tricks to fatten up flowers in a week, in less than ideal weather conditions?

You can use Bud Candy right up to a week before harvest. It's sugars and carbohydrates, so it should flush clean pretty quick.

And thanks, BK, but like you said in another thread, once it's dry, it'll be a mere shadow of its former self.

I was doing a bit of research and saw that you can use unsulfured molasses as a finisher. It has the necessary minerals, especially phosphorus, as well as the carbs. It sounds great in theory, so I pulled off most of the fan leaves to shock them and force energy to the flowers, and gave them a good drink of blackstrap. The feeding rate for finishing is 10-15 ml per liter of water. I figure it can't hurt.
