Got word on Facebag that Aaron Redner (formerly of HBR and of the Grateful Bluegrass Boys) and his family were evacuated - as was Adam Traum - a fine Northbay guitarist and photographer.... Cars with kids, dogs, guitars forced to exit the scene.
I woke up and blearily turned on the morning news to see them rushing people out of a Santa Rosa hospital with flames in the background and structures burning in Grass Valley. Holy crap, fire everywhere! Hope everyone I know is OK. It's crazy how fast that all blew up overnight!
If any of you is in the position to be in smoke (even in other cities from fires) remember to wear a mask to prevent breathing particulates and the smell of smoke. An effective and easy to find mask to find is any of the ones rated N95 or higher sold at hardware, paint, building stores. We wore them for a couple of weeks when outside when the smoke was in the Willamette Valley from fires in the northwest. They made an amazing difference to the way peoples lungs felt.
It might be considered "touristy" but there's a place called Love on Haight that is is pretty cool and is owned & operated by an acquaintance and fine individual.

There is another rapidly growing fire in Anaheim Hills in SoCal this morning, near the 91 and 241. This is a densely populated area and there are mandatory evacuations.
So far so good folks, Grass Valley is safe. Lots of smoke on the horizon but not in town yet. Most of the evacuations from the Los Lobos fire is because of Lake Wildwood ( a gated community ) The wind has died done for now, It is so dry around here who knows what will happen. Bombers flying over the house all morning makes it sound like a war zone. Wish Us Luck it will be a long week
awoke to the smell of wildfire and assumed it was in the local hills... was really surprised to find out it was from fires over 100 miles to the North!
here's a pretty amazing real time satellite loop (click to zoom, rotate)... that huge grey cloud over the ocean is not fog.
Safe here but it's been a wild 24 hours. My nephew and sister were here visiting, we took the neph to Safari West yesterday as a surprise (it's like Lion Country Safari, they have 400 acres of land with animals and you ride through on a jeep checking them out) and were staying the night in one of their on-site "glamping" tents. The wind was so crazy I thought the tent was going to collapse on us, but we eventually fell asleep, next thing I know there's a guy outside yelling that the park is being evacuated. What a sight when we went outside. My god. The rigeline was completely ablaze and the sky was dark red and the smoke was really dense. Props to Safari West staff for evacuating about 100 guests smoothly in pitch dark except for the fire light conditions (I wrenched my ankle in the process of carrying my nephew to the road, but we got out). We passed the Luther Burbank Center and all of the Mark West Springs road structures on our way back to SR. They were all still there at that time. We went to bed here in SR and around 6:AM the smoke was so bad outside the windows I went outside and all of my neighbors were evacuating, so I had to rustle up my nephew and sister again and GTFO of dodge. She wisely opted to go back home then and there, once they were gone, I packed up the family pet, documents, etc and bailed out too. I was in Petaluma by 8:45. Went to a diner there just wiped out, sat at the counter and the nice man seated next to me bought my breakfast. Good vibes to you, kind stranger.
A friend in Occidental tagged me and offered shelter so I took him up on it and spent most of the day watching news updates at his house. Friends here in SR said it was safe to return to my neighborhood so I did. Back home now and it's positively surreal. People walking around with bandanas tied around their faces to cut the smoke, everything is closed, smoke is still pretty bad and sirens are near constant. My neighborhood is deserted, but appears to so far at least be unscathed. Waiting to hear if my friend's home in Kenwood survived and keeping an eye on the City of SR alerts in case I need to run again. PS saw on facebook that the Safari West animals seem to be ok still although they're still in danger.
We kept hearing reports of a Giraffe walking around Larkfield. Someone on the radio said safari west let the animals go free. Seems crazy to me but its a crazy day, anything is possible, I guess...i had no idea it was this bad this morning, I rolled into Santa Rosa abot 730 am ready to work. Had no idea what I was driving into...
The giraffes never would've made it to Larkfield if they got out, that fire was on our asses as we fled in a vehicle. The animals were still in their enclosures as we evacuated. I'm sure the only thing that saved them was staying put. The grounds at SW are so heavily grazed by their animals there was no grass there to catch fire, and a few very open areas without trees. I saw on the SW site they posted that the animals are all accounted for right now and that the rumor they let the animals loose is false.
(SW)UPDATE: 5:15pm 10/9
"As of late this afternoon, the fences of Safari West stand and the animals are contained and accounted for. At no point were fences cut or Safari West animals released. The situation remains dynamic and highly dangerous and fires are burning in the vicinity. We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available."
close friend of ours lost his home in Santa Rosa, his entire neighborhood went up in flames. good news is that he and his partner and their kitties got out safely. temporarily staying at his sister's house and looking for a hotel - not having an easy time finding a qutite place to deal with all of this..they've already been in touch with their insurance company who is willing to pay for housing until their home can be rebuilt, it's going to be a while. while insurance will cover many of their expenses, it's gotta be hard coming to terms with it all..and yeah losing all the GD memorabilia. They had a very sweet poster collection and other vintage stuff.
When the smoke has cleared, she said
That's what she said to me
You're gonna want a bed to lay your head
And a little sympathy
There are things you can replace
And others you cannot
The time has come to weigh those things
This space is gettin' hot
You know this space is gettin' hot
Thanks Alias. I'm glad we got out safely, and feel terrible for the people who lost their homes and jobs overnight. Totally luck of the draw that it wasn't my neighborhood that was leveled.
Yeah sounds like some neighborhood are still burning. Some are on high alert. Curfew is in effect in the mandatory evac zones. We tried to hit the beach to escape the smoke this afternoon but its thick and falling ash everywhere...
Yeah luckily were still in Rio Nido. One of the houses we put an offer in on, in Santa Rosa, is gone. Hard to think of today but we got extremely lucky when a lot of people didnt. Such a hard day...Lisa's boss lost his house on fountaingrove...if anyone hears from Dan please post here...
Reporting 0% containment in all areas. So glad Mully checked in and so far zoners are reportng safe. Any word from Peak and Jamjuice? I think their neighborhood is OK.
(((((Jerry))))) miss you buddy, guessing that scuba tank went boom :(
Scary story Dise, so glad you are safe. Very devastating day yesterday.
We were left without phone/internet, so every few hours had to go out toward Santa Rosa to see how far we could get, and what direction the fires were headed. My boss lost his home on Mark West Springs. Around 5:00 pm last night we were able to drive down the freeway and it was a total nightmare. Fires still burning on the sides of the road, the Hilton Hotel was destroyed and still on fire. Places where buildings were supposed to be, were completely flattened. Paradise Ridge Winery was smoldering, nothing left. The Luther Burbank Center was still standing and both hospitals, but homes and business were reduced to smoking rubble. It looked like a war zone.
Thanks for checking in here. So far, other friends and relatives are safe and damage minimal.
Cal Fire is not showing much containment, which is troubling, to say the least. http://www.fire.ca.gov/current_incidents
If there is anything I can do, please let me know and please be safe.
Damn. The pictures on the news are insane. Whole swaths of Santa Rosa burnt up. This looks like its as bad or worse than the 1991 Oakland Hills fires. Stay safe folks.
Well, I did walk in Muir Woods today but it is so smokey. Park rangers were jumping out to warn people with little ones about air quality, with people ignoring them.
I blew off a drive up the coast, why bother? I'm staying in Sunset and this situation is terrible. So heartbreaking for so many people who lost everything with 5 minutes to pack and run.
Still on the rescue and safety mission and someday, they'll get around to putting out the fires. Over 1,000 people missing?
Leaving tomorrow and with this air quality, I'm OK with that. Usually I hate leaving. But this will be going on for a while yet, with winds probably picking up tomorrow making the fires worse.
I spent the day cooking and feeding fire evacuees at one of the shelters. We're expecting 600 more people tonight as another area in SR is now being evacuated. If you're local and want to help we sure could use more volunteers. People need dog/cat crates, pet food, and sundries like baby wipes, diapers, feminine hygene products and toilet paper. The shelters are accepting food but keep in mind refrigerator space is limited, if one shelter turns you away go to another or come back later, we've got tons of bread but no butter or margarine. Lots of elderly bed ridden evacuees and old folks from Oakmont need soft foods like yogurt, jello cups, pudding packs, fruit cocktail, and individual cans of juice (juice squeeze dealies have been problematic). Tents, clean blankets/sleeping bags, and pillows would be great too.
That's very kind, Dise. Got some friends who are working to get the pet supplies up there. I did read that they didn't want anymore clothing donations, already have plenty and just no place to store the stuff. Must be terrifying for people in the area who are still having to evacuate. This ain't over yet..
My friends who lost their home are staying with family but hoping to find a nearby hotel. I don't think that's going to happen though, just too much demand locally. If anyone has any leads on a nice apartment in SF for rent - a year or two needed let me know.
>>To accommodate the estimated 20,000 evacuees, a number of local landmarks have opened their doors to the growing influx of escapees. Below is a list of shelters, organizations, schools, and businesses we've found that are currently operating as safe spaces; they need able-and-willing volunteers and donations of essential supplies.

Great information, Dise, and your work today cooking and feeding people surely made a big difference. The scope of what's going on is kind of lost on me, I just keep trying to imagine it.
It beats the hell out of sitting in the house waiting for bad news, so let's call it enlightened self-interest. There's a lot of widowers and widows who are essentially all alone at the shelters. I wish more volunteers would show up, if only to talk with people and keep them company. You don't need any special skills to lend comfort to frightened people.
I'm in a "climate controlled" building in San Leandro (more than 60 miles south of Santa Rosa). It smells like smoke inside and most of us are starting to cough.
Thoughts and prayers to those much, much closer to the sources of this horrible smoke.
What a trip? We had to drive down to UCSF today. We just got to Daly City ( only place we could get in with Hilton Points). Grass Valley was smokey, two new fires started over night . I 80 was bumper to bumper starting from Roseville. The smoke started getting thick around Sacramento, Dixon was unreal. We took 37 to Marin, Seal Point Speedway, you could see the fire went right up to the highway, the whole hill was scorched but the road was open. We made it to Ocean Beach with no problem, hung out on the beach went through Golden Gate Park then headed for our hotel in Daly City. My heart goes out to everyone who lost houses, pets, cars or whatever. This one is bad, Do what ever you can to help these folks even if it is just a smile or a hug. When I get home I am going to help as much as I can, 60 houses were lost up here so far. I know I can make a difference.
Thanks for the updates I have 2 friends that lost everything.
Hey Johnny D I will be back in Marin Nov 1, see you at the club house, I do have go to Hangtown so I put off my Med stuff till then
The entire town of Calistoga has been told to evacuate by 5:00pm today.
The entire town.
Berkeley has put out a red flag warning because with the probability of rising winds, ash and possibly embers could find their way to the Berkeley hills.
And even all the way down in the south Bay Area where I am, all of Santa Clara valley is thick with grey smoke and it's been getting worse all day.
Just talked to our house sitter,he said the 5 fires within 5 to 10 miles of our house are still raging, the smoke was very thick, wind was not that bad yet. This is nothing compared to what is happening in the wine county. Our good friend finally got out of Glen Ellen, made it to Lake Tahoe. Our friends in Forestville has a house full, now they might have to evacuate. Still waiting to hear from a few more friends.
Another crazy day. The winds are picking up again, very eerie outside. I ended up helping a lady to the Fair Grounds evac center, she lost everything but her horse. not a whole lot of people there, maybe 150+ milling around, I was expecting much more chaos but everything was relatively chill. The police and national guard troops were very friendly and accommodating. You can really feel the community spirit in the air. Lots of good folks around doing everything and anything they can do to help...
I just flew into SF - looking out the windows of the plane all we could see was smoke laying in a soft orange gray brown layer for much of the trip. I think Mt. Lassen was the last big landmark, and that was through thick haze. Our departure from Eugene was delayed for 3 1/2 hours due to smoke at SFO (and an unrelated closed runway). I'm happy to be on BART to Berkeley and really happy I brought my N95 mask - if you're in the Bay Area or anywhere the smoke is, get a mask. It'll make a difference in what you breathe and how your lungs feel. Stay safe.
The smoke from these fires hit Elko NV yesterday afternoon as we were returning from work. It was so bad I had to take my contacts out as I drove back to Reno last night.
Continued wishes for safety to all who live closer to these fires.
I saw people riding bikes maskless through the smoke, which is full of asbestos particles, fire retardant, lead paint, etc that the cig smoker might have wanted separate from his nicotine fix.
speaking of Memorabilia, if anyone has an extra set of the Phil and Friends Warfield Run (Dancing Skelton duo May 13-18 2008), please let me know. My friend lost his entire GD collection in the fire and it's the one thing he's hoping to replace. saw some on ebay but thought I'd check here first.
that's so sweet, Canyon. As it turns out another kind zoner already contacted me and has offered up the set. thank you so much for the offer. I talked to our friend Bob earlier tonight and he was doing well. so many people dealing with loss, and many more dealing with tragic loss of family and friends that perished in the fires. hoping that things don't get worse in the fire zones tonight, stay safe.

The giraffes never would've

This ain't over yet..
My friends who lost their home are staying with family but hoping to find a nearby hotel. I don't think that's going to happen though, just too much demand locally. If anyone has any leads on a nice apartment in SF for rent - a year or two needed let me know.

Fingers crossed for them, at least.
Thanks for sharing that link.

What a trip? We had to drive
Hey Johnny D I will be back in Marin Nov 1, see you at the club house, I do have go to Hangtown so I put off my Med stuff till then
Hug a tree

Bart, it scares me that you took the route that you did. Sounds like Armageddon.
Let's try to get together on the first,
Until then, take good care of yourself and enjoy some good music.
Best wishes to your friends and everyone who has lost during this horrible disaster.

The entire town of Calistoga
The entire town of Calistoga has been told to evacuate by 5:00pm today.
The entire town.
Berkeley has put out a red flag warning because with the probability of rising winds, ash and possibly embers could find their way to the Berkeley hills.
And even all the way down in the south Bay Area where I am, all of Santa Clara valley is thick with grey smoke and it's been getting worse all day.
This thing is unbelievable.

Just talked to our house
Just talked to our house sitter,he said the 5 fires within 5 to 10 miles of our house are still raging, the smoke was very thick, wind was not that bad yet. This is nothing compared to what is happening in the wine county. Our good friend finally got out of Glen Ellen, made it to Lake Tahoe. Our friends in Forestville has a house full, now they might have to evacuate. Still waiting to hear from a few more friends.
Like Lance said this is unbelievable

Another crazy day. The winds

Stay safe.

I saw people riding bikes maskless through the smoke, which is full of asbestos particles, fire retardant, lead paint, etc that the cig smoker might have wanted separate from his nicotine fix.

>>The home of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz burned to the ground in the deadly California wildfires but his widow escaped, her stepson said Thursday.
Jean Schulz, 78, evacuated before flames engulfed her hillside home Monday and is staying with a daughter, Monte Schulz said.
Good Grief
The Schulzes built the California split-level home in the 1970s and the cartoonist lived there until his death in 2000.
“It’s the house he died in. All of their memorabilia and everything is all gone,” Monte Schulz said.
