Well, how about an extreme example - would you take her seriously on the subject of sexual harassment if she was wearing a string bikini as small as the law allows while holding forth?
Or, to put it another way - if a woman was walking around town in said string bikini (not on the beach or equivalent), do you not think she would be hoping for or expecting some reaction - stares, comments?
But she wasn’t, you said she was wearing a tight-fitting dress with holes and slits, which seems like a normal thing for a woman to wear on a talk show.
What you are saying is that if you’ve been sexually harassed and want to talk about it on TV, that you shouldn’t dress in a way that makes guys want to sexually harass you, right?
She was wearing a sweater that covered her cleavage and arms. It wasn't even that tight. She does have boobs, so other than a mumu, one would see bumps. She was wearing long pants. Other than a few slits, that showed a few square inches of knee and upper body skin, she could have been a nun.
This is gross. She can wear whatever the hell she wants and shouldn't ever have to be concerned about getting harassed. The solution to sexual harassment is for men to stop sexually harassing. There is no hypocrisy. Victim blaming is bullshit, full stop.
Not saying she or any woman should be harassed because of what she's wearing; just that her point could have been better made if she was dressed differently.
Well stated uncle sam. Yes any woman should be able to walk around in a string bikini or anything else her heart desires. The people that do the harassment are resposible for their f#cked up behavior, not the victims, is this really not obvious?
>> Not saying she or any woman should be harassed because of what she's wearing; just that her point could have been better made if she was dressed differently.
Think about the assumptions under this argument. How could this make sense unless what you're really saying is that women shouldn't raise issues about sexual harassment if they dress in certain ways that supposedly invite it. That's utter nonsense. No form of dress "invites" sexual harassment. If men feel that it does, they need to ask themselves why and address the problem themselves.
>>>Not saying she or any woman should be harassed because of what she's wearing; just that her point could have been better made if she was dressed differently.>>>
Differently than in that picture?!?! Really? You can't take her seriously talking about sexual harrassment because she wore that dress? OK, dude. That's on you.
1. The idea that it's the victims fault for being assaulted or harassed is disgusting. Like beyond disgusting. Think about what you are saying.
2. The outfit you are questioning, pictured above, is not a green light for harassment. At all. It's actually just a bad outfit. I've seen my mail lady wear more provocative clothing if that is what you are suggesting.
3. A woman should wear whatever the hell she wants without fear of a man hurting her. I've never harassed or assaulted women. Me being attracted to a beautiful woman does not mean that I assault or harass her either-I have full control and no inclination do such things.
I don't think women should be harassed, ever. Or men, for that matter. If they are, it's not the victim's fault. I don't think her outfit is a green light for such. Anyone should be able to wear whatever they want without harassment.
I also feel that the fashion industry is complicit in the harassment culture, and by wearing a dress with "peekaboo" gaps, she dilutes her message. That's all. I'm done.
I've known alot of men who struggle to find women or keep satisfying relationships. I'd like to offer up:
Lagers advice for men seeking women:
1. Pay attention to your hygiene. Cleanliness is a turn on!
2. Find a style that's natural to you and allows you to feel confident, and wear clean clothes. Skip the oversized baggy shirts with stains and big snow boots. Skip tie dies and fanny packs. Basic rule of thumb: Don't look like you are homeless or a deadhead.
3. Don't whine. About anything. Ever. Especially about sexual assualt.
4. Don't be an idiot. Read a book. Find a hobby. Now you have something to talk about with women.
5. Don't assault women. Don't assault strange women, or coworkers, or women you supervise.
6. Never assume the women you know are interested in you and make them feel uncomfortable by harrasing them. Leave them alone.
7 Find single women and talk to them. Go on dates. Be confident in who you are.
8. Avoid addiction. it's a real turn-off.
9. Learn to cook and be a gentleman, without being whiny or an idiot.
I don't know. Those are just some tips off the top of my head.
>> by wearing a dress with "peekaboo" gaps, she dilutes her message. That's all. I'm done.
Not done being wrong apparently. Women aren't sending signals by their choice of clothing, and it's not men's role to police what women wear. There is no dilution of her message because her clothes are irrelevant.
>>>>>Women aren't sending signals by their choice of clothing
You really don't think some (many?) people - men and women - send signals by their choice of clothing?
Things like "I'm powerful" or "I'm invisible" or "I'm rich" or "I'm dorky" or "I'm bad-ass" or "I'm sexy"?
I think they do.
OK, already in the boneyard, might as well take off deep.
Get yer torches and pitchforks ready.
Let's say you go to a talk on (pro) human rights and the person speaking is dressed in Nazi attire. Would you find it difficult to take them seriously on the subject at hand? After all, clothes are irrelevant.
>> Things like "I'm powerful" or "I'm invisible" or "I'm rich" or "I'm dorky" or "I'm bad-ass" or "I'm sexy"? I think they do.
Sure, but a message they're never sending, especially to coworkers, is "Please tell me your evaluation of my appearance" or "Please grab my body without my permission."
>>Let's say you go to a talk on (pro) human rights and the person speaking is dressed in Nazi attire. Would you find it difficult to take them seriously on the subject at hand? After all, clothes are irrelevant.
This analogy fails because there is a clear and obvious link between Nazis and human rights -- namely, Nazis were among the all-time MVPs of violating them. So a Nazi advocating for human rights is clearly hypocritical. In contrast, there is no necessary link between what women wear and sexual harassment. So there is nothing hypocritical about a woman in a form-fitting dress advocating against sexual harassment.
Maybe an alternative way to make this point is to note that women are sexually harassed no matter what they're wearing, no matter what they look like, all over the place, every day. Sexual harassment is almost always much less about the harasser's desire to satisfy a sexual urge than it is about enforcing dominance by forcing themselves on women, verbally or physically or both. So a woman dressing "sexy" is really irrelevant at several levels. (Also should make clear that it of course happens to men as well, but I'm mostly talking in the frame of women here because of where the thread started.)
I just looked this up to find out how the Daily Show sexually harassed her. All I found is that a couple of days ago she was on the show talking about sexual harassment. This is a very confusing thread.
