the thunderbird rises from the ashes!

great news! thx

suck it woz.

DNB followed by JKB, fuckin BRUTAL!! lol cheeky

cool. probably will be the best show there all year.

Yeah DNB heart

Big hell yeah!

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck yeah

Got tix! We are driving down for this! Judit, if you want a ride, let me know.

Now I really need to find 2 tix for Dec 9 Phil w/ Musselwhite!

Huge weekend.

Thanks, LLOLLO, I'll let you know. Probably not.

(((Huge weekend.)))

^I like the sound of that, Mark D.

YAY for David and his triumphant return!

And all a part of Mark D's Huge Weekend.

G.Fish also has a YUGE lineup of shows that weekend in the Bay Area...

John McLaughlin-Jimmy Herring > Rex Foundation Benefit > the first DNB 2-set show since 9/11/2016!!

definitely gotta pace myself that weekend, lol

hopefully, David will continue his healing trajectory, gaining strength and stamina... and the DNB will be booking mini-tours in NorCal (and beyond?) in the not-too-distant future... one can wish

it remains to be seen how a resurgent DNB might coexist with Moonalice, the up-and-coming California Kind (which already has a run of shows booked in mid-January), and even NRPS

stay tuned, freaks

Well this is good news! Too bad I can't make it out. Have fun everybody

See Everybody Soon Come !!!

Glad to see David back at it. Can't make it down this time around, but looking forward to future opportunities to see DNB (and Zoners) again.

>>>it remains to be seen how a resurgent DNB might coexist with Moonalice, the up-and-coming California Kind (which already has a run of shows booked in mid-January), and even NRPS

you dont think that once DNB gets going again that CA kind will just kinda drop off? they seem like a DNB placeholder to me. DNB has been coexisting with moonalice and NRPS for awhile now...really hoping they drop the CA kind thing, maybe except for a few one offs, if david gets back to full touring form. i have only seen one set before the last nelson appearance at txr, so im not to versed in CA kind, but from what i saw at txr, seemed like katie would always start singing right at the point in the jam where DNB would really start to get cooking.

I'm officially in.   So fucking excited...just happen to have a work trip and land that morning..  Sometimes it all works out.

hoping there is a harvest tour next year, gotta hit that before it's all said and done.

Daylight, that's one possibility for sure. But after reading a couple recent interviews w/ Headband, I came away with the impression that California Kind could have some staying power.

read for yourself (below) and see what you think...

excerpt from Barraco interview published online 11/6/2017:  https://www.jambase.com/article/bringing-dead-life-rob-barraco-dark-star...

ROB BARRACO: ... this new band I’m with, California Kind.

JAMBASE: How did this come together? It’s Katie [Skene] and you and a few folks who are obviously well known to our scene.

RB: John Molo, you know, he met Katie down in L.A. He was producing a young band and they are friends with her, and he heard her music and just flipped. They started talking, and he got an idea, and he talked to Barry Sless about it and looked at whether they could put together a band with her. Barry called me late last year and said, “I have this great band idea and I think you and her would sound so good together vocally.” She’s a shredder! She plays guitar like nobody’s business. So I took a chance and came out to California and rehearsed and did two gigs, and by the end of the second gig, I felt like it definitely had mojo. It’s been huge fun. I’ve been part of a lot of bands over the years, and there are only a few of them that had real mojo. Dark Star is one of those, the Phil Lesh & Friends group — the Q — was another. This band has mojo.

JAMBASE: How are you finding time for this? You’re not exactly not busy.

RB: I’m spending time on it, man. They’re totally cool about working around my schedule with Dark Star. I have no intention not to do Dark Star, and I don’t mind spending my off time doing this. It’s what I signed up for when I chose to be a working musician.

another excerpt from an interview w/ Barraco, published online 11/27/2017:  https://liveforlivemusic.com/features/interview-rob-barraco-2017/

Rob Barraco: ... I’ve been out in California touring with a new band, California Kind, which I have with friends from Phil Lesh and Friends and The Q [The Quintet]—John Molo on drums and the rest of the members of the David Nelson Band [Pete Sears, Barry Sless], and then we have this 24-year-old singer-songwriter, Katie Skene, and this insane guitar player from Los Angeles. The project’s way steeped in the blues and R&B… Way more than I’ll ever know.

L4LM: Where did you pick Skene up from?

Rob Barraco: John Molo met her producing a young band, and she played for him and he lost it. He got a hold of Barry Sless, and Barry called me and said we got this idea for a band. I said, “I don’t know, man. You guys are in California, and I’m in New York. I mean, I have no free time as it is.” I went out and did it, and now I’m hooked.

L4LM: Has California Kind given you a chance to do new stuff?

Rob Barraco: Oh yeah, we’ve been writing. Katie has a million originals, and Barry and I have stuff.  We are also doing covers of things we’ve always wanted to play but never have. We picked a bunch of Blind Faith and Traffic tunes—obscure stuff that’s really cool to play, and nobody else is doing it. We’re trying to make it our own and make it sound like us.

that band should have mojo, as barraco says, but the band totally doesn't have any mojo.

That Katie chick is 24.  I would have guessed late 30’s early 40s easy.

I was really impressed with the new band and especially Katie at the recent Crossroads show. Really looking forward to seeing them again. I really liked her style and original tunes. I think they are going to be around for awhile...

Not sure we can make this Nelson gig but we are so happy that David is feeling well enough to play again!

Anybody know the name of the project Molo pinched her from?

a young band

Thanks for sharing that article, Gary.

For some reason, I had the impression that Rob and Katie were the members who started the band.  Perhaps it was the way that Rob did most of the talking on stage during their first show.

Now I know the true story...

John Molo, you know, he met Katie down in L.A. He was producing a young band and they are friends with her,

TH, it sounds like they knew her, but not that she was part of the band. Doesn't answer your question about what band Molo was working with, though.

Super talented for such a youngster.  Songwriting ain’t easy.

I've been listening to the 'California Kind'  recording which the Zone's own BudBoy taped,  in the Truck lately.

I like Katie's singing and playing,  but agree that she does not take the ensemble to outer-space levels.  Give her some time and perhaps the experiment will achieve Earth - excape velocity.

Anyway,  extremely Happy to see David Nelson getting out on stage once again.  May the Healing continue !!

^agreed, on all accounts.

Wow, I can't believe that hasn't sold out yet. It's a shame I spent all my money on a tank of heating oil the other day, or I would fly out for this.

Hope this will lead to some eastward touring....

Molo's Mojo would be a better name.,especially now knowing this is John's project.

Great newsyes

Enjoy everyone!

I'm in.

if anyone has 2 extras for the Phil show the night before, let me know.

thanks.

^Good news, Turtle!

We'll keep an eye out for 12/09 tix...

WOW pete aloha is epic.

beautiful

I was bummed to see that the Rowan Santa Cruz show is on the same night I'm already going to the John McLaughlin/Herring show in SF, and I'll be at TxR on Saturday for the Phil Plays The Blues show.

The Kuumbwa will be an awesome little place to see that Peter Rowan show.

Freight & Salvage is getting some really good bookings lately. I wasn't particularly impressed with the place the one time I was there; it seemed big and a bit sterile, but I figure to give it another chance in January for Marty Stewart.

^^yeah listening now for the first time. incredible. really nice.

marty stuart shows are incredible. my fav. of the year..

who has extra phil blues tix?

no word here really, yet sold out.

guess people get interested when the busboys are not on the bill....

the 2/15/14 show is great but I'd like to stab the motherfucking talkers in the background

that was nancy.

You mean my birthday show?  Yeah. It was pretty good.

Birthdaysetlist55.jpg

Turtle, we are looking for two 12/9 tix too...my guy won't travel south w/o them...though I'm willing to take a chance that some might be available at TXR on day of show.

I'll keep an eye out for you too, in hopes that you'll do the same... I have posts and alerts set up on Cash or Trade and elsewhere.

Nobody to say show-off?

Do you mean say that you're a show off because your birthday is on the song list? You already felt excitement and pride, why mess with it?

got my tickets, ready for nelson time!

>>>Nobody to say show-off?

nelson band is way to down to earth for that!!! :)
