In December of 1980 I ventured forth w my NJ Homies to the tribute and vigil to John Lennon at 72nd and Central Park West in NYC.
It was a sad, profound and moving experience with literally hundreds of thousands of emotional fans.
I recall at the time that I had a habit of always carrying around a "tunebox," to play cassettes....
While at the 165th Street Subway station, where we caught the A Train downtown I blasted, "Come Together," as loud as that little thing would go.
I noticed literally hundreds of people started visibly crying. Heck - we all cried together in tribute to this hero, man of peace and cultural icon. I will never forget it.
The extended moment of silence on CPW - abused by the hum or a half dozen news choppers floating above and filming the masses was a very moving experience -
then we all marched to Strawberry Fields and sang together.
"I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together
See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly
I'm crying~"

He inspired me to be a big part in the raising of my children, especially in me and my wife arranging our schedules so that we cared for our kids without daycare or sitters. My shift was 3pm till 11:30, feeding, baths, tv and playing. This was the most rewarding thing in my life, thanx John

I was at the XMAS Tree
I was at the XMAS Tree lighting at Rockefeller Center the exact moment John was shot.
What was joyous holiday drunken revelry with about a 300 folks singing songs, suddenly became a valley of tears, in and around the Ice Rink and lit XMAS Tree.
I witnessed hundreds of folks walking to the Dakota, blocking traffic. I don't like to think about that night.

I was literally on the corner
On 12/8/80 I was literally on the NE corner of 72 nd and Central Park West, across the street from the Dakota at 6pm
waiting for a ride home to NJ from my Dad, who's office was on the East Side - (@85th and 5th.)
Amazed me that this horrible act went down just hours later.

A co-worker of mine tried to
A co-worker of mine tried to save his life during his residency and spent years standing aside while the on-call surgeon who wasnt even in the building claimed to have been the surgeon in the room. He always maintained that it was poor taste to be laying any claims-to-fame for this nutjobs actions, esp considering the outcome. He finally got fed up with listening to this clown carry on with the press a year or 2 ago and told the truth. Its funny to see that blowhard surgeon backtrack about what he does and doesnt remember now that the truth is out there.
Here he is the moment he was introduced to Johns sister Julia last year:

About a third of JL's music are works of pure genius.
Another third are pretty damn good.
The last third not so much, but even within those there are pearls to be found.

Lennon was never popular in Hooville. Cindy loo Hoo, little Timmy, and the all the Hoos , rather appreciate the more melodic tones written by other Hoos. "Yahoo Dor-e`" (Christmas Day) never gets confused with "War is Over" (So This Is Christmas) in Hooville.

I tend to agree, Surfdead. Considering how he was practically revolutionizing rock nd roll song writing at the time as well is quite remarkable. Imagine R+R songwriting without Lennon...... pretty difficult.
