I thought a lot of really solid albums came out this year; what was your favorite?
i seem to b alone on this but I think the new release I listened to the most this year was son volt's 'notes of blue'.
they still may be nowhere near as inventive or interesting as wilco but in these turbulent times I really felt 'notes of blue' was a soulful, consistent album of integrity I could hang my hat on.
jay farrar proves he's still got something to say and he can still make an enjoyable record.
i thought this was overall one of their best yet.

THE STAVES with YMUSIC -
THE STAVES with YMUSIC - The Way Is Read (vinyl)
Sister harmony trio meets chamber sextet at a festival. Hey. How about we . . . . And they know a guy with some recording gear . . .
Kinda stole the show when we saw LIVE FROM HERE with Chris Thile (formerly A Prairie Home Companion).
During the intermission I overheard (2) They really blew my mind(s) and (1) They blew my fu**ing mind (What? It's New Yawk).
It ain't for everybody. But it's pretty damn cool.

Singer-songwriter goes to Joan Shelley (eponymous album) or Michael Chapman (50). Jake Xerxes Fussell (What in the Natural World?) and Kevin Morby (City Music) get shouts.
Anything with mandolin kind of gets immediately dismissed from my year end 'favourites' list.

Kendrick Lamar's Damn is what
Kendrick Lamar's Damn is what my daughter says - and she would tell you no other album meant as much to 2017 either.
I would probably go with The War on Drug's A Deeper Understanding, but I'm a lot older than she is.
>>probably beyond the comprehension of most here
Yes. That album is very, very good and they both have explored a wide range of styles over many albums and I give you kudos for discovering it, but you should give more credit to your fellow zoners in the arena of music that goes beyond the periphery. This territory covered by Zimpel / Ziołek has been explored by many artists that have been discussed here over the years. Many Kraut Rock bands for sure, some King Crimson, James Plotkin, several ECM artists, Zakir Hussein, Shakti - heck Zimpel / Ziołek even treads into Pink Floyd land at times before travelling back to less mainstream hallways. Their use of woodwinds in Wrens harkens back to what Radiohead was doing on Amnesiac. Music builds on itself and is a glorious thing to behold.

As 'DAMN.' Tops nearly every
As 'DAMN.' Tops nearly every best of the year album list I've seen published so far, I feel like now is a good time to bring up how 'Run the Jewels III' absolutely smokes it.
don't know whether it's cause the RTJ album came out so early in the year, people felt DAMN. Had more political implications that resonated deeper with people or, most likely, everyone's just riding too high on that Kendrick wave to acknowledge that for the most part, musically, DAMN. Was a step backwards for Lamar.

I am going through my stack
I am going through my stack of 2017 CDs. Many were purchased at the artist's show. This is the first weekend in a while not at a show, giving me a chance to get organized here -
I'll listen to a few at a time & rate them up to five stars.
Steve Earle & The Dukes : So You Wannabe An Outlaw (2017) **** This my first Steve Earle album since Copperhead Road. Great stuff. The album is dedicated to "Waylon-By-God-Jennings"
Jackie Greene : The Modern Lives : VOL 1 (2017) *** 1/2 Picked this up at the Jackie /Anders show. Love the artwork & crafty songs. Not sure it's full album or EP. It's only a 1/2 hour long.
CRB - Barefoot In The Head (2017) *** This is a very good recording - with warmth, for this day & age. The songs High is Not the Top & Glow are sweet with some nice sounding acoustic guitars.
Magpie Salute (2017) *** Recorded (basic tracked) at Woodstock Sessions for a "Live Feel". My favorite song is a Rich Robinson / Black Crows song "What is Home"
