Best NYE shows/ stories?

Forums:

There was chatter on this topic on the old PZ some years back- lots of good input.

My favorite was the guy who woke up at 4am in a Dunkin Donuts- god knows where.

Personally I rarely caught any shows- only 1973 that I can remember - Commander Cody and Asleep at the Wheel- Keystone Berkeley

PLQ in 2001 at Kaiser as well. Dead new years shows were always too tough a ticket to score, so I made  it to several warm up nights between 1979 & 1991 in Oakland...hot shows mostly.

Played a few gigs- one memorable one was in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming on a cold cold night

Comments are welcome.

I made it out to Northern California in November of 1982 with another friend from LI while another was finising exams at Sonoma State.

My second day there, we stopped at a red light (in my Toyota Celica I had just purchased) and John Cippolina walks right in front of our car from a Burger King and walks into the Keystone in Berkley.

We had arrived in hippyville.

Got a room at a dive motel, picked up the paper and saw Van Morrison was playing at the Great American Music Hall that night. What a night, early & late shows and met a sweet waitress from back home on Long Island, that hid us between shows and let us in for the late Van show for free!

Had tickets for 12/26 -12/30 but not for new years. I made friends with Bill Graham (complimented him on his JAGUAR). Once I was in I was able to get backstage. I had already hung out with Brent 12/30.

My friends snuck in through a Window at the Oakland Aud, got caught and had to build the NYE Mushroom float for BGP. I told Bill my story, how I was without a ticket, and he put me on th will-call guest list for 12/31/82.

I was on the fucking stge 12/31/82 (to the right) when Etta James & the Tower of Power exploded into the 3rd set of the night!

Had tickets for all 5, 2 friends went to the 30th, needing the 31st, started looking as soon as the 30th wrapped up, scored, and also got a priority ticket to get let in early for NYE, #144.  They were interested only in hanging on the floor, so they gave me their priority ticket.

Got the first row lower balcony 1/2 way between the stage and soundboard, perfect for a multi act marathon show and saved 3 others. Best seats in the house on Phil's side.

Tower of Power riffed Lovelight during the tuneup and it was off to the races.  Last 3 set plus encore NYE...

I’ll always regret not making the trek to Cali for a GD NYE show. I was always grateful for the radio or ppv broadcast.

Actually, the only concert I went to on NYE was JRAD last year at the Cap. Went by myself, but had lots of fun with the cool folks I ended up sitting next to. It was a great time.

I only made it to one NYE show, back in 1985.  We basically lived in the parking lot of the Oakland Coliseum / Arena for what seems like a week.  Early in the process, the powers that be decided to close off the coliseum to restroom use  (the arena was closed except for the actual shows).  Folks would walk up the ramp, see the closure, and peeline it to the side where the dumpters where...  it got real nasty real quick!  By the time the urine had drained into the gutter a few hundred feet away, it had literally become a river that acted like a mini flash flood, and quickly made it to the biz district a half mile + away (yes, that was an interesting walk for beer), I think they realized it was better to have no paper products for us (all used up), than create such a public display of public functioning (there were thousands in the parking lot).  This might have been the first year in Oakland vs SF  (can't remember such things, cough).  Definitely dropped the ball on that one, a true learning experience!  So that was the bad.

The good, the first nights show smoked, great playing, fast tempos, I think they did the first Quinn The Eskimo, and it rocked!  (saw the greek shows that spring and it got butchered, ouch!).   There were lots of friends in the parking lot, would just randomly free range the lanes, and always ended up seeing someone I really cared about, so we invited them to our spontaneous Oregon sections of the parking lot, and eventually had a dozen cars / truck / vans / busses there...  Partay!   That's where the pic below is from.

The day of NYE they passed out flyers, can barely remember, something about Not Fade Away...   the show was televised (USA channel?), and I guess they wanted to get the show off to a rip roaring start, sure as shit, the audience launched into a call and response of Not Fade Away, and the band obligingly opened with it!  Rocking the house boys!   If I recall, the Neville brothers and Baba Olutungi opened (and sat in later during the show).  Ah the memory is lost in a multi day long acid fog, LOL.

Here's the New Years start, loved Bill Graham in the Cake, really showed his sweet side!

great thread.

I've seen Les Claypool half a dozen times.

We rode BART to the East Bay the night Johannes Mehserle killed Oscar Grant.

12/31/91 at Oakland Coliseum with Bela Fleck and Baba Olatunji

Bluelight- nice photo

Killer run in 82 - I made to 12-27 I think... a friend saved me a balcony seat - second row- 50 yard line.

One of the hottest shows I've seen.

12/27/82 was a very tight show.

I made it a point to stop and try to capsulate the memory of the audio clarity, epically on the Brown Eyed woman. What a show. No tape yet has captivated 12.27.82 proper.

Right on, Klondyke.

The Oakland '82 shows had a very big impact on my life. I just never shut up about it.
