MSG Man posted it on Facebook. What's creepy about it to me are the people with their phones taking pictures of Weir. Otherwise, the gent is singing to his very dear friend.
Agree with Timmy. Had I known it was an open casket thing rather than a memorial (which I consider to be typically a less private sort of event than at bedside with immediate family) I wouldn't have looked.
I agree with Judit, the cell phones make it really weird ( but then we wouldn't of been able to see nor judge ), but I don't get the whole cell phone "out" all the time either.
I sometimes at shows want to aim a watergun at all cell phones up in the air in front of me and take each one out !! It's like folks can't see with their eyes anymore and need to have the device to see what's goin on :(
C'mon, you can move from that spot, most know the tapers area...and they are no where near annoying as a friggan million lights shining back at you !!!
Barlow on Barlow writing lyrics for Cassidy ~ there's so much experience packed into that song and he still leaves it open to interpretation! (: Probably the perfect song choice for mourning & celebration<3
This looks like an in-house kind of thing. The obit said he died at home and that sure looks like a hospital bed brought into a home.
In that case, it's prob'ly a very intimate crowd--family&close friends.
Everyone handles grieving their own way--if that's what gets them through and helps them honor John, that's great....Bobby speaks through music so it makes sense that he's playing and singing.
Creepy probably wasn't the best word, but to me it was just the cavalier way many were videoing the deal, like it was just a normal party or something. From my ignorant vantage point it seems like it should have been a much more solemn personal moment for all those folks.
But after watching it again it seems that everyone is pretty relaxed & casual, so who knows how long that wake/party had been going on by that point.
I imagine Barlow wanted it to go that way, with everyone he cared for celebrating his life and hoisting a few around him while he was lying in repose.
My only question now is, how long did they keep him laid up in the house like that, and was he "administered" to in any way?
Wouldn't it start to get a little ripe in that room after a while?
My neighbor/friend's mother died at home. I'd never met mom. Friend dressed her, laid her out, put flowers from the garden around her. She invited me to come over to meet her mom. I did and found it touchingly sweet, but I wasn't totally relaxed with it.
I just rewatched the video of Cassidy and felt comfortable with it. Perhaps I was just pretty raw the first day I watched it.
Grateful Dead songs are alive. Like other living things, they grow and metamorphose over time. Their music changes a little every time they're played. The words, avidly interpreted and reinterpreted by generations of Deadheads, become accretions of meaning and cultural flavor rather than static assertions of intent. By now, the Deadheads have written this song to a greater extent than I ever did.
The context changes and thus, everything in it. What Cassidy meant to an audience, many of whom had actually known Neal personally, is quite different from what it means to an audience which has largely never heard of the guy.
Some things don't change. People die. Others get born to take their place. Storms cover the land with trouble. And then, always, the sun breaks through again.
>>Not completely sure but it looks like a Buddhist funeral to me.

U would think the people around Barlow were okay w the phones/ filming ...they could of easily shut it down ...
I'd bet the filming was done for family and friends who couldn't be there, and not so much for deadheads on the internet to get a peek. IOW I doubt his daughter who is seen filming Weir's tribute to her dad with her cell phone is star struck by Weir and was having a "look at me" social media moment as others have suggested.
