Bad Sound

Forums:

What's the deal?

with the cost of attending a concert these days, can/should we not really expect that sound will be great in the venue? or in different areas of a venue?

i have attended a few shows recently with waaaaay subpar sound. last sat dave rawlings and last year the mavericks.

i know venues have a ton to do with it from their layout and architecture, to curfews/local ordinances.

the mavs show was outdoors where i have seen dso w/o incident.

is it situational or a lack of thorough sound checking??

seems dicey these days. so many factors telling me to stop going to shows.

searches,fees,vips, meatheads, $$beer costs, travel/parking....

can we just "turn it up"? at least...

2 bands I have never had bad sound with...

David Nelson Band

do their sound people try harder? are just the shit!?

i don't get it.

Saw plenty of hard rock bands back in the 1980s with just awful muddy sound.  But then the Grateful Dead changed my perspective on how bands should sound.

Santana the other night started a little rough sound wise, but after a few songs, that got it dialed in nice.

Worst sound I heard in recent years was Snoop Dogg at the Crystal Ballroom two years ago.  Couldn't make out a thing he was saying.  They must have tried really hard to get the sound that shitty.

LOL saw Snoop at shoreline. All his sound people do is crank everything to 15. He was headlining BFD and everyone else who played was fine so it is his crew.

because most misguided people equate volume and smiley face EQ with good sound

I saw James Taylor a few years back at the local basketball arena. (I have seen some great sounding shows there including Phil-n-Dylan and Roger Waters).

We had 25th row tickets and sat dead center.

The P.A. sound was horrible and most of the sound we heard was coming off the stage. WTF?

My only JT experience to this point, but I probably won't go back. sad

Panic used to have really crappy sound back in the 90's, and a little beyond. I heard them blow speaker stacks on more than one occasion.

Doesn't really matter cause most folks around this place hate them.

Haha - no Technical Director? The Theater at Ace Hotel just posted a vacancy announcement.

Live sound. More ways to get it wrong than to get it right.

Ween always sounds clear and loud.

Rap/hip-hop in general never sounds good in concert.  Certain genres are best left for studio album sound.

Plus the sound at the Crystal sucks donkey balls.

Rap can sound good if its done right. Having seen a lot of hip hop over the 10 years at the club I work at (Higher Ground in BTV), I have been surprised at how good it can sound, because back in the 80s and 90s you are right, it sounded pretty poor. That being said our new board is really easy to screw up as it turns out! Snoop at Bonaroo in 2009 sounded great as well.

I thought this was a nickelback thread.

Panic often has bad sound.   The only time I've had a different experience is outdoors or when they did the wood tour.   It definitely deters me from seeing them.

I liked some of those wood tour recordings
