Generator is needed if you have a remote chance on losing power due to weather, especially in the fall or winter, a friend of mine showed me how to put a male plug on each end of an extension cord...run the generator plug the cord into a wall outlet....power. I was impressed...it works
Nope, used it for a couple of years, no problems..... oil burner and a couple of lights at night so pipes would not freeze....did it 3x.... non issue, a licensed electrician put in a 3 prong box that hooks into the fusebox from outside now..... just was saying it worked until I got the exterior box, when shit goes bad, you do the best you can
Equinoxmagick ~ 6 days is a long time! I know quite a few people who had hours or days without electricity but are mostly on. Are you to the west? (You don't have to answer, that's just where I know of others who are still without power.
Glad you're warm and have coffeee - that really matters!
is this common up there, or more like an every 20 year kind of thing? (if fairly common, I think I would hit up candiefrog for a generator).
>>> have to bail for Portland so I can shower
Nice to have that option... I keep a propane 'shower' and space heater in my earthquake kit ( nowhere nearby had power for a week after the last big one, plus a lof of roads were toast).
that's pretty recent, but I don't know that once every two years would justify a generator... I'd probably stick to propane products to keep us comfortable.
A friend near 18th and Chambers only had to wait 5 days, but Comcast tells her she won't have phone, internet or cable til December 28th... not the same as power, just a little inconvenient.
i just feel like Eweb needs to step up their game. Tomorrow is day 7, and I'm basically downtown.
And I have a chainsaw, but luckily there's nothing to cut up this time. I do feel lucky, considering some people had trees crush their cars & houses...
Trips, you are running all the amperage from the house over those wires that are rated for 20 amps at most. You are very lucky you did not burn down your house. What a hugely stupid idea.
My sympathies to EQMagick/CT and all without utilities. If you dread bugging your friends for shower & laundry time, there's often local gym or health club with free one-month trial membership. Place for a hot shower, maybe a swim or lift a few weights.
I think the gizmos Hall (Googly) posted are pretty neat-o. I own one of those Mr. Heater propane rigs. They are fine for a large tent on the mini propane bottles. A regular 20-lb. BBQ tank will last a day or two depending on the heat setting. The Zodi Extreme propane 3-gallon shower device is a nice little self-contained thangy, but for $125 I can get a couple Coleman stoves, and a couple Solar showers, and a couple funnels.
I guess it's a cool thing to take camping (the Zodi Extreme). My plastic bag solar shower is not as sturdy, but holds 5 gallons. Already got a 5-gallon pot and propane range/stovetop. "Coghlan" brand solar shower w/ 5-gallon capacity was under ten bucks.
If the AC power goes out here, I can still cook on the gas range, but the Well-pump does not run, nor the water heater. So it would be prudent of me to acquire a generator, at least a small one for the Well pump.
I've actually been heavily involved all week in the final stages of my new Well installation. They drilled & cased it back in May or June. Now it is nearly functional, with most elements in place. A big part of it was 200+ feet of backhoe work for a 3-foot deep trench to lay the Pipe to my shack.
Too many details to explain. The whole project has forced layers of adulthood upon me and harshed my Mellow. I just wanted to be a simple Firewood Monkey and take Hüsky for Sled runs.
At 11th and Chambers in Eugene. Power stayed on the whole time. Branches down on every block. I've been through hurricanes in the south that caused far less damage than this ice storm.
You folks seem to be not far from Fairgrounds, Fred Meyer, Holiday Market neighborhood. Actually have a few friends in the area; talked to one the other day but they did not lose the utilities. They were making Gingerbread cookies at the time.
Really sorry to hear this. I used to live in a log home in the woods and we once went 5 days without electricity or water. Had to move the wife and kid into a hotel for a few days. It's brutal.
Vibes for the Eugenians and all others who lost power. We lucked out this time - power stayed on so water from the well could keep dripping, so water didn't freeze up. We were just stuck up here by the ice on the road. All better now, as it is well above freezing. Hope folks get their juice back on pronto.

even have one of those expensive hand-crank coffee grinders, so I'm keeping caffeinated as well.
at some point the sponge bath isn't gonna be good enough though, and I'll have to bail for Portland so I can shower & do laundry.
