Dead & Company Play Backyard Benefit, Raise Over $1 Million for Ocean Preservation
Dead & Company performed their smallest show ever on Saturday, July 7, as a part of “Rock Under the Stars,” a backyard charity event in Hollywood, Calif.
Taking donations from the intimate audience of 200 people, the band raised $1.1 million for Oceana, an aquatic preservation organization.
“Going from a stadium to a house party is a very interesting dynamic, but the point is a musician is privileged to be a musician and musicians should give back that privilege,” Mickey Hart told Billboard. “In general, you gotta defend the treasures. One of them is the oceans and you have to defend it however you can. You have to fight the evil that’s in the White House now with everything you have. So any night I can raise a million dollars is a good night.”
In a brief yet fiery single set, Dead & Co. played crowd pleasers like an opening “Samson & Delilah” and a closing “Touch of Grey,” while still getting heady with a winding “Dark Star” jam that eventually reappeared later in the set.
The band will get back to their regularly scheduled programming on Wednesday, July 11 in Albuquerque, NM before they close their summer tour with two nights in Boulder, Colo.

Dead & Company
Oceana Benefit
Private Residence, Hollywood, Calif.
Samson & Delilah> Dark Star> Brown-Eyed Women, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Franklin’s Tower, Dark Star, Shakedown Street, Touch of Grey
DeadCo is not a cover band because Bob Weir is an original artist singer/songwriter from the Grateful Dead
The best stuff they do is Bobby doing Bobby... They should actually ditch a bunch of this Jerry and replace it with Bobby material.. At least 50% should be bobby material if not 75%.. There is plenty of Bobby they are not doing.
That also might have been true for Furthur; and some of my favorite tunes at a GD concert were Bobby's - Jack Straw, Black Throated Wind, Greatest Story, and more.
Arguably, over the 30 years, The Other One was a better jam vehicle than Dark Star.
BUT, it's the Garcia/Hunter tunes that get 20,000 plus (and, probably, John Mayer) to show up show after show - songs for the ages.

Heard peeps refer to DeadCo
Heard peeps refer to DeadCo as a cover band
Wasn't the Grateful Dead kind of a cover band early on. Played more other peoples songs (Folk, Dylan & Buddy Holly) to fill sets.

Difference is, we pay $100 for the show and he makes $100K.
