Grateful Dead Fan Who Sold LSD Granted Clemency From Life In Prison
A Grateful Dead fan who was serving a life sentence for selling LSD to a police informant is among the 111 individuals who received commutations from President Obama on Tuesday.
Timothy Tyler had no history of violence when a judge’s decision to include the weight of the paper that held the LSD he sold pushed the amount over 10 grams, leading to a mandatory minimum life sentence in prison. The offense was Tyler’s third, including two prior drug convictions that each led to probation.

Blame the legislature.

About time! I know a woman whose sister was raped and murdered in the late 60's when she was 12. They recently caught the murderer thanks to DNA, and the POS only got 5 years for raping and murdering a little girl in her parent's home. Shit is messed up in this country.

He did have to do that. He has to respect the precedent set by the supreme court's ruling.
In one well known federal case, Chapman v. United States, the United States Supreme Court upheld the prosecution’s contention that the combined weight of the paper and LSD should be used to calculate the sentence. The Supreme Court determined the paper was a “mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of LSD". The weight of the pure LSD in Chapman’s possession was fifty milligrams, but the combined LSD and blotter paper weight was 5.7 grams, enough to trigger a mandatory prison sentence.
