Jerry's Wake

Forums:

I remember pulling into San Francisco not knowing what to expect, we arrived a day early, the first place we went was Haight Ashbury...as we approached the actual corner where the streets meet a gentleman was playing "Comes a Time" and singing the lyrics "never in my mind to cause so much pain", at that very moment we ran into Crystal Dave & Gina, went to Golden Gate Park and smoked herb together, Dave spoke of rumors Jerry was in fear for his life, playing a show on '95 summer tour with the house lights on, Jerry's passing was an earthshaking reality we were all just beginning to process.

Arriving at the Polo Fields, there were all the signatures of a huge event, Bill Graham Productions pulled out all the heavy machinery...setting up a huge stage, everyone was told they could camp on site, the preparation continued throughout the night into the morning, it was much colder than I thought it would be.

Dawn finally broke, there were various ceremonies, if I remember correctly there was a Native American ceremony, Buddhist Monks, various speakers, someone read a eulogy by Bob Dylan, Wavy read Robert Hunter's Eulogy, Phil beckoned Jerry to go with God.

At some point we all had a New Orleans style jazz parade around the grounds with a gentleman on one of the floats asking the parade participants to testify for Jerry.

Nobody seemed to know who may be playing music that day, they had set up a huge sound system...we danced to soundboard recordings of live Garcia until the sun was about to set, it was a very special day.

I became friends with Ruby (the bands admin) right before Jerry's passing. Then I won a contest via the almanac. Jerry's Smoke Video.

She was so happy for me and called a few times.

The fucking next day, Jerry passes away. Ruby called me the next week 8/18/95? to see how I am

holding up & that she just got the JGB Smoke Video & she's mailing me back all the tickets for the fall '95 tour

Plus something special +

That something special was one of the few embossed Eulogies for Jerry Garcia she took from his FAMILY wake

Ruby loved me, she said "aint no-one that loves that man more the you Joe" +

RIP Ruby & RIP Jerry

Went through a ruff divorce that summer as well..

Shoot me please..

I remember that afternoon as being a rainy gray day. Ran the fields for fungus. Ended up in downtown WPB spinnin and grinnin to some fine Garcia tunes coming from every pub and bar up and down Clamatis Street.

Everyone was showing our love for the fat man.

Special tribute to a special part of many lives   Long live love

As I recall my wife was nine months pregnant and wasn't Terribly happy with my leaving

Cool.  Can you post a photo?

No, you I would have posted & even made a video of it.

When I moved here, I put in a GD book (there are about 14 of them on shelf behind me & I can't find it).

Its very upsetting to have these playbills, stubs & by being extra careful I fucked up on that card

I can't find it in those books YET..

I have learned that each funereal parlor prints these defiantly, based on what the small print shop can offer.

But this Eulogies My GOD is special.

A beige textured hemp card - 3.5 x 8.

Pretty roses a long the boarder, wrapping around the top ~ +

It only takes a second to Google to see how much I fucked up by loosing it

Pretty sure everyone who had unfilled GDTS ticket orders got one of those Hunter Garcia elegy cards as well as glitter tickets for the canceled shows, with their original money orders in the SASE..I did, anyhow. You didn't need to be Calico's special friend, she reached out to GDTS buyers personally, quite often. Was a nice touch.

>> can't find it

Probably just floating around somewhere two lightyears away.

Yeah, foggy then & now 2 light years away, and two back.

Scary..

Thanks Dise, that takes some of the pain away knowing they are more out there.

I got a toy with my Happy Meal. Methinks the McLady loved me most.

That card rings a bell.

I got one of those along with my MSG tickets.

Calico was the gate-keeper & being nice to Dead Heads was something natural to her. Part of my journey..
