So my son just moved to DC for law school and is staying at an AirBnb on the north side of town until he can move into his apartment on Sept. 1. This morning, his Jeep loaded with most of his worldly possessions turned up missing.
He called the cops and they confirmed they had it at the impound lot "for safe keeping," $220 later, my son finds out that it had been stolen, looted, and left in a bad spot with a parking ticket. Half his shit in the Jeep was taken, the radio gone, and the steering column busted, He is driving it around using a screwdriver as a key. I convinced him to get the Club to keep it from getting stolen again. After having my Subaru ripped off twice in the course of one month two winters ago, I swear by that device.
Car thieves suck.

Shit! Sorry that happened.
Shit! Sorry that happened.
I had a much more mild thievery situation when I was moving to Chicago as a 22 year-old (stolen box of treasured items from the Greyhound bus) and I still wonder if things I still can't find (ie: original GD/Joan Baez Winnie-the-Pooh poster) was in that box.
Your guy got it so much worse.
Wishing him the best in law school.

Will certainly be interesting to see how he thinks of criminal law after this lol
They do say a conservative is a liberal who had their wallet stolen.
I got my friends trunk popped one time and some school work was in my bag.
Car thieves and showtalkers man! Car thieves and showtalkers!!
I never leave anything in my car. Ever.
Even with the club, which my brother had in the city, they'll still smash your window for something.
Even a gad damn baseball hat!

What Car Thieves Think of the Club
Back in the ’90s, I was working as a design engineer for Chrysler. I had responsibility for key cylinders and door latches. At that time auto theft rates in Europe were increasing and driving the insurers to put pressure on the Euro governments to require increased theft deterrence devices on all new cars. As part of our attempt to figure out where best to invest our design dollars, we hired some professional car thieves to provide a more hands-on perspective than us engineers had (well, maybe not all of us).
At some point, the Club was mentioned. The professional thieves laughed and exchanged knowing glances. What we knew was that the?Club is a hardened steel device that attaches to the steering wheel and the brake pedal to prevent steering and/or braking. What we found out was that a pro thief would carry a short piece of a hacksaw blade to cut through the plastic steering wheel in a couple seconds. They were then able to release The Club and use it to apply a huge amount of torque to the steering wheel and break the lock on the steering column (which most cars were already equipped with). The pro thieves actually sought out cars with The Club on them because they didn’t want to carry a long pry bar that was too hard to conceal.

Yah... car thieves suck.
Yah... car thieves suck. Somebody stole my car and crashed it a couple months ago. Living miles from town on a steep hill, it's very difficult to get around. I decided to just move instead of getting another car, but now starting to see I'm not going to be able to get through the logistics of moving unless I break down and get an interim car. Annoying!
Luckily, no one was hurt in the crash. Also gave me the signal that it's time to move, which is good because I'd really prefer to live closer in to civilization, such as it is.

I live waaay out in the Boonies, so usually don't bother taking the keys out of the ignition.
But with what BrightDay said, it might make sense to have some sort of Nature - Alarm setup going on.
Maybe some Tarantulas or Rattlesnakes to guard the vehicles when I'm not around.
Of course I'd need to provide snacks & water for them, and leave sticky-notes on the windows so I don't sit on the damn things.
It would be sorta fucky if the Guard-snakes hid under the seat, and only appeared when you're trying to pass a vehicle in traffic, though.

I am sorry that happened.
I am sorry that happened. All I can say about the club after years of parking in SF and NYC....car got stolen when club not on. Car broken into but never stolen with club on. There is always a thief that can outsmart what you got, you just have to hope that today's thief isn't that guy. In any case, he def needs the club now since it starts without the key.
Having said that......parking a car full of all your worldly possessions on the streets of DC (or any major city) until Sept 1? WHO WOULD DO THAT?????????????? This was absolutely going to happen 98/100 times (the other two times it gets towed). Having been ripped off in the big city, I know how shitty it feels to realize "Fuck, that was really stupid, of course that happened". Consider this a necessary part of his education.
Car thieves suck, but on day three this qualifies as an attractive nuisance.

When I moved to SF with my car full of stuff the first thing I did was drive into the city and go directly to a storage facility and drop my stuff off. You can't be in any big city with out of state plates and a car full of stuff. Thieves aren't dumb. Sorry about his belongings.
My brother once left his Telecaster in its case laying in the back seat of his car parked on the street in nashville. He was too lazy to bring it in the house. Yes it did

They do suck. One time while living in Printer's Row (Chicago) I accidently left the door unlocked. The next day there was stuff all over the front seat from the back. Don't think they took anything. Another time while living in Humboldt Park, I ran into the convenience store for two miuntes and left the keys in the car. My dog was in there and I had a set of the Great Books of the Western World. Someone jumped in my car and took off. I found my vehicle a couple of blocks away. The dog was fine thank God. The books were strewn about in a field.
