I find his singing rather neutral. It neither ruins nor enhances, It is just there. But, and this is a big but, it would take the worst of Donna's screeching to bring this band down to any great extent for my ears.
Slack, i just watched a freakin horrible movie...bryan cranston flik...Time over Mind , i think it was called...just god-awful.....thought you might like it
It's not the singing I mind, although it's not very good - the GD really couldn't sing until 1970 or so. And it's not the teases - I don't mind 'em. The thing that turned me off to this band when I first saw them a couple of weeks ago.was their heavy-handed and industrial approach to the material.
I like my GD music with some subtlety, some nuance, some clarity. These guys don't really have any of that.
I would describe Mayer's vocals as far less annoying than T-Ham's. While his style is weird, his volume is better than T-Ham's. T-Ham sings like his mic is off and he has to yell.
I could not disagree more. Tom Hamilton freaking SHREDS but his singing sucks IMO. Mayer aint the greatest w vocals but is competent knows the material and WAY better than Hamilton w the vocals to my ears. To each their own
After listening to Bob Weir's paper thin vocals last night and John Mayer's faux emotion with facial contortions, give me Tom Hamilton any day. And has been stated earlier, when did vocals ever become an important criteria for GD music?
I disagree. I think vocals are/were important for the dead. Working Man's, American beauty, Reckoning to name a few.... were solid. They would not have been as popular if Jerry couldn't bring you into the songs with his soul.
I agree that you go to JRAD for something beyond the singing though.
^ I should have struck a better tone earlier, no pun intended
I think everyone has a good singing voice as long as they find their true singing voice, if you can walk you can dance, if you can talk you can sing, it's kind of like The Legend of Bagger Vance, everyone has a unique golf swing, you just need to "find your swing", everyone has a beautiful & unique singing voice, they just need to discover or perhaps rediscover it.
That's what I just don't get, I've never been at a show when I thought Garcia didn't sing & play beautifully, I do not understand those feelings, I just don't get it. I should have responded to that statement much more graciously.
Jerry's Folky singing style was always primary to the Grateful Dead.. And the softness of Jerry's approach is what makes his music pleasing... It also creates a contrast for when he blows the doors out ... This guy gets it
Yup. Some songs were made GREAT by Jerry's voice. Specially the twangy/folk stuff and slow tempo songs, Im thinking bout dew, china doll, SOTM, black muddy even Black Peter. When Jerry was singing from the heart, you could usually tell, and those musical moments were heightened emotionally because of the vocal inflection. Now after hearing many of the tunes hundreds of times, I got to the point where I wished they would skip the verse lyrics and get to the jam, like playing, uncle johns etc. Good singing, good lyrics and great jamming, the full package (even 85-95) imho
I don’t think any of the guys in JRAD can sing. Aside from Dave they are all a buncha amateurs who really have no business playing dead. I guess they have some kinda hipster thing going for them and people go to their shows but they were pretty rough whe I saw them. I was surprised at the hype. Russo is a pro but his drumming style is fucking boring. He can lay one beat down and he plays it all day and fiddles around with symbols. Fortunately, they are competing with dead and co right now who has some of the worst drumming in a dead cover band ever.
For the 2nd time, he joined the Wolves in Philly for 4 tunes, no word if he had a mic or scarfed up.
There was a mic but Bob basically ignored him the whole time that he was on stage for two songs Gonesville and the Maker. Bob could have used some help on vocals, as his vox was a little more horse than the previous week.
