As much as I believe Trump is off his rocker re: Google & news, I do believe they represent a monopoly; possessing close to a 90% market share of the search market.
Imagine if there were a single private for profit entity that was contracted to be responsible for operating the chamber of commerce office for all municipalities.
FoM ~ I did a search as well and found plenty of sites that put Google's share of the search engine market in the mid-70s. Considering that Google is banned from China, the highest population of internet users, to think it has 90% of the world market is probably not accurate.
It's not a matter of believing, it's a matter of tryijng to get the best info as possible. Perhaps you can explain why so many other "reliable" sites report much lower numbers? Just trying to figure this one out.
Search for just the China only stats on statcounter and you will see that Baidu is the dominant search engine in China - yet the rest of the world balances that out so that google still has over 90% of the worldwide search engine market.
Looking at the granularity, I think I see why other statistics are lower. It looks like they are including all Google properties in that figure. YouTube has a huge amount of searches but I don't completely buy that it is a search engine. Considering a YouTube search only brings up videos within YouTube, I consider it a searchable service, not a search engine. Take those numbers out and the 90% figure drops. Interesting stuff.
Youtube is indeed considered to be the 2nd most used search engine on the web - and it used precisely for the video search results it provides.
I am Google Ad Words certified - which means I passed a certain amount of Google training. Whoopie! lol
This is how I knew about statcounter. Still - I understand Google's point. People search for all sorts of things on youtube instead of using regular Google because they would like to see a video about a recipe they want, or whatever. You may not be surprised by this - but there are a number of people who would rather see a video than have to read even the smallest amount of text.
90% was actually a bit of a surprise to me, I was going on 70% ... but hadn't looked it up recently.
As far as the inclusion of all Google properties: I believe those indices still operate under the same "large tent" known as Google & are co-mingled from within Google Web results.
While they aren't technically a monopoly, they sure do resemble one ... at least in so far as how activity manifests itself based on stats.
I believe the larger question is it a healthy thing for the U.S. economy to allow said quasi-monopoly to continue unabated? Is it a good thing for the country for so much power to be vested into the hands of a single corporation?
There are so many advantages they have to squash their competitors by using their own searches to imitate or divert the flow. It's not good.<<<
Google has encroached upon what have traditionally been links to external websites at the top of a results page; either with its own content / storefront or "recycled content" - effectively keeping visitors confined to Google's domain.
Yelp seeks to revive EU antitrust complaint against Google
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yelp Inc said on Tuesday it has renewed a European antitrust complaint against Alphabet Inc’s Google, seeking to gain traction on a longstanding accusation that the search giant unfairly promotes its own services in results.
A similar complaint Yelp filed in 2014 has not led the European Union to issue a formal charge against Google, nor have letters and testimony to U.S. regulators led to charges.
But the company said it has strengthened its complaint by looking at the EU’s ruling last year that Google misused its dominance in product shopping search results. Google, which is appealing a $2.9-billion fine in that case, declined to comment.
Yelp also took into account Google’s rebuttal to an antitrust complaint in Brazil related to shopping results.
The heart of Yelp’s concern remains the same: That Google’s local search tools, such as business listings and reviews from Google Maps, receive top billing in results while links to Yelp and other sources of potentially more helpful information are listed much lower.
“When a mother does a search for a pediatrician in Berlin...she is being siphoned into an inferior experience powered exclusively by Google’s local review content,” Luther Lowe, Yelp’s senior vice president of public policy, told Reuters.
The Financial Times first reported on the new complaint.
Fallacy. No search engine CAUSES malware. Can a link from any search engine land you on a page that downloads malware to you? Of course it can.
As for use of Bing, I switch between Bing and Google every day. Often you get a much better handle on stuff that way. Double check, triple check is what I say.
